Revealed at Nintendo's 2011 E3 press conference, the Wii U is the next-generation successor to the Wii. The Wii U is Nintendo's first high-definition console (capable of outputting 1080p video). As with its predecessor, the Wii U features a brand new controller—this time with a touchscreen built in. The Wii U hardware is backwards-compatible with Wii games and peripherals, but does not ship with support for GameCube games or peripherals.

The Wii U launched with several exclusive games, including New Super Mario Bros. U and ZombiU, as well as several popular multi-platform games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Batman: Arkham City.

Wii U Virtual Console[edit | edit source]

The Wii U Virtual Console is the name of Nintendo's retro video game emulator for the Wii U. Games are bought using 'points' which are purchased with real currency through the eShop Channel, which accesses the Nintendo eShop. Currency can be added to your account with a credit card or by purchasing a prepaid card worth a set amount of points. Games can be played offscreen on the Wii U GamePad, without use of the television.

The Wii U Virtual Console is not to be confused with the modern content acquired through the Wii U's eShop channel (e.g. Hyrule Warriors can be purchased through the eShop, but it does not interact with the Wii U VC). Similarly, the Wii Shop channel offers Wii U owners a way to purchase wiiware titles and emulated games for use on the emulated Wii interface (e.g. content exclusive to the Wii)
