You begin the game all alone as the Prince of Midenhall. Your father, the King of Midenhall charges you with the quest to seek out your relatives, other descendants of the Line of Erdrick, and band together to defeat the evil forces of Hargon. The Prince of Midenhall is the only full fledged warrior of the assembled group. He can equip nearly every piece of armor and weapon, save for those designed exclusively for women. In the end, he alone can equip the strongest items available. Although he will never gain the ability to cast a single spell, he more than makes up for this with his strength. He is usually the first character capable of destroying any enemy with a single blow. As long as the Prince of Midenhall is alive, he will lead your party throughout the world, in towns, and in dungeons.
Prince of Cannock
The Prince of Cannock is the first relative that you will find and join forces with, although it won't happen before you manage to track one another down. The Prince of Cannock is a true descendant of Erdrick, capable of both strong physical attacks (although not as strong as the Prince of Midenhall), and powerful magic spells (although not as powerful as the Princess of Moonbrooke). This ability to be both a warrior and a magician allows him to adopt a wide variety of strategies. He can fight alongside the Prince of Midenhall, and strike enemies with his weapon, he can heal party members who are in danger of dying, or he can cast spells which target the enemy and do greater damage to them than if he were to strike them. Always middle of the road, he has less Hit Points than the Prince of Midenhall, and less Magic Points than the Princess of Moonbrooke, but he has just as great potential as either of them, and should not be underestimated.
Princess of Moonbrooke
The Princess of Moonbrooke is the last companion that you find, and she will not be able to help you until you break the cruel spell that Hargon has cursed her with, transforming her into the form of a dog. Once the curse is broken, she will prove to be a valuable ally. She starts out with the invaluable Healmore spell, which substantially restores lost health. She won't help much in a standard weapons-only fight, but she will come to learn magic spells that can quickly reduce the size of the enemy forces you face in half, and sometimes entirely. She is tough to equip with worthwhile weapons and armor, but certain items are custom made for her. She is fragile and doesn't gain a great deal of Hit Points, but her Magic Point total can eclipse that of the Prince of Cannock's. Eventually, you will come to rely on her more devastating spells as a way of quickly turning the tide of battle in your favor.
