Exciting Boxing is a boxing simulation developed by Konami and published for the Famicom at the end of 1987. It is a very unusual game in that it was sold packaged with a special controller. This controller was actually a plastic inflatable stand with the image of a boxer depicted in the front, and several sensors located on the inside. To play the game, players must inflate the stand, and literally punch the boxer on the front. The sensors inside would register the hits and transfer the information to the game, where the results of the player's punches would be shown on the screen.

The game itself is a fairly simplistic presentation of boxing, featuring a training and fight mode. Progress could be saved and restored via a password system. Fights were presented in first person perspective. There are only seven opponents, each in a different and increasing weight class. Naturally, they get stronger as the difficulty increases, and they become much harder to hit and knock down. Players must train between bouts in order to increase their speed and power to match the levels of their opponent.

Modes

  • Strength: The strength mode shows your current power and speed with respect to four different types of punches; Jabs (left or right), Hooks (left or right), Straight punches, and Body punches. They are displayed with respect to your current and upcoming opponent. This means that even if you fill the meter to the maximum and defeat one opponent, these levels will decrease when next viewed because your next opponent will be considerably stronger. These meters can only be increased through training, not through fighting.
  • Training: It is through training that you can increase the speed and power of your four various punches. For 60 seconds, your trainer will stand before you and issue one command every second. The four different commands are Jab, Hook, Straight, and Body. When a command is given, you have approximately one second to respond and punch the inflatable controller accordingly. If you execute the command successfully, the game will indicate the speed and power of the punch. Note that the power of the punch is strictly determined by the game, and not by how hard you punch the controller. However, the speed of the punch is determined by how fast you react and respond to the command. If you hit the controller in the wrong location, no change is made to your speed or power. You cannot lose speed or power by making a mistake. When Jabs or Hooks are requested, you may punch either the left side or the right side. Straights and Body punches must occur in the center of the controller.
  • VS Mode: This is the mode in which you challenge opponents. You will first face an opponent in the Fly weight class, and if you successfully beat your opponent, you will proceed to fight one opponent each in the Bantam, Feather, Light, Welter, Middle, and Heavy weight classes. As you accumulate wins, the strength of your opponents will increase. As a result, your own strength, relative to each new opponent, will decrease and require more training. A fight will continue until one fighter is knocked out without standing before the end of a 10-count, or if the fighter is knocked down three times within a single round. Each round is 3 "minutes," although a game minute is faster than a real minute.
