Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa/Shop

From StrategyWiki, the video game walkthrough and strategy guide wiki

Throughout the game, you will have an opportunity to use the money that you scoop up from defeated enemies to purchase upgrades for Opa-Opa. You can buy as many engines, weapons, and bombs as you can afford to. However, only one of each item can be active at any time. Engines do not wear off, but weapons and bombs do. When they do, you automatically revert to your original default weapons. To select one of the alternate weapons that you have in reserve, you must return to a shop. You keep all items that you purchase from the shop until you lose a life.

In order to buy items, you must locate the Shop cloud. At least one is located in some section of each round. In some cases there may be more than one, and in a few cases, there are hidden shop clouds with special deals inside. In order to find hidden shop clouds, you must shoot their location enough times before they will appear and allow you to enter. Once you finish shopping, you are given the opportunity to select which engine and weapons you wish to be outfitted with before you leave. Unlike the original Fantasy Zone, shops never disappear, even after you've visited them. You are free to return to them and buy from them as frequently as you wish. However, also unlike the original, the contents of each shop are fixed. No shop sells every item, so you must make your choices based on what's available for sale in each round.

Engines[edit]

Each of these engines increase the speed of Opa-Opa. The increase in speed correlates to the price of the engine. The price of the engines do not increase, regardless of past purchases.

Item Name
Price
Description
Fantasy Zone II shop Big Wings.png Big Wings
$800
This item increases the size and effectiveness of Opa-Opa's own natural wings. Though they provide the least increase in speed, this engine upgrade should be purchased at the very minimum.
Fantasy Zone II shop Normal Engine.png Normal Engine
$2000
The Normal Engine is the first engine replacement for Opa-Opa's wings. They give Opa-Opa an appreciable boost in speed, certainly enough to safely dodge many boss attacks with ease. This engine is highly recommended.
Fantasy Zone II shop Jet Engine.png Jet Engine
$5000
Once you become comfortable enough maneuvering Opa-Opa with the Normal Engine, you may wish to purchase this upgrade which gives him another boost of speed. Just remember to fly carefully through crowded screens.
Fantasy Zone II shop Turbo Engine.png Turbo Engine
$10000
With the Turbo Engine, you begin to sacrifice control precision for speed. Truly you will have no problem zipping around the screen, but you may have difficulty stopping in time to prevent a collision with another fast moving object. Buy this engine sparingly.
Fantasy Zone II shop Rocket Engine.png Rocket Engine
$30000
Not only is the Rocket Engine prohibitively expensive, it makes Opa-Opa nearly impossible to control. Even a little nudge sends Opa-Opa flying. Purchase of this engine is not recommended. Use the money to buy extra lives instead.

Shot Weapons[edit]

When you purchase a shot weapon and activate it, you will be able to use it for approximately 20 seconds. After those 20 seconds are up, you will lose the weapon and revert to the default Twin Shot. Each time you purchase a weapon, its price will increase by the amount shown in parentheses.

Item Name
Price
Description
Fantasy Zone II shop Laser Beam.png Laser Beam
$1600
(+ $1000)
The Laser Beam is an intensely powerful weapon. You can hold the fire button down, and the laser will continue to extend from Opa-Opa to the end of the screen. As a result, it will continuously pummel enemies that it hits and destroy them quite quickly.
Fantasy Zone II shop Wide Beam.png Wide Beam
$2000
(+ $1200)
The Wide Beam weapon allows you to fire a bullet that is nearly three times as high as Opa-Opa. While it's easier to hit enemies with such a wide shot, its destructive power is the same as the Twin Shot.
Fantasy Zone II shop 3 Way Shot.png 3 Way Shot
$2500
(+ $2000)
This weapon gives Opa-Opa the ability to fire 3 bullets that fans out. Each bullet is as powerful as the Twin Shot, so if all 3 bullets are fired upon an enemy at close range, they will do a fair amount of damage.
Fantasy Zone II shop 7 Way Shot.png 7 Way Shot
$4000
(+ $4000)
Like the 3 Way Shot, but with four more bullets which fan out in a wide pattern. Each bullet is as powerful as the Twin Shot, so if all 7 bullets are fired upon an enemy at close range, they will do a substantial amount of damage. The price of this weapon increases dramatically, making it difficult to purchase more than once or twice.
Fantasy Zone II shop Fireball.png Fireball
$5000
(+ $4000)
The Fireball gun launches a large fireball that is capable of destroying anything it comes in contact with, and keeps going. However, unlike the other weapons, this one only lasts for 10 seconds. This weapon is incredibly useful when all of a stage's bases are lined up in a straight row.
Fantasy Zone II shop Big Shot.png Big Shot
$6000
(+ $1500)
The Big Shot is an enhanced version of Opa-Opa's standard Twin Shot. It has twice the fire power, and like the Twin Shot, it never runs out. You can lose it if you are killed while the Big Shot is active, but you can purchase it again... at a higher price.

Bombs[edit]

Some bombs like Twin Bombs, Big Bombs, and Big Twin Bombs are upgrades to your original Bomb. When you purchase other bombs, you are buying them one bomb at a time. You can hold up to ten of any such bomb. After selecting a particular bomb, you will revert to the regular bomb until you return to a shop.

Item Name
Price
Description
Fantasy Zone II shop Twin Bombs.png Twin Bombs
$1200
(+ $500)
The Twin Bombs item gives Opa-Opa the ability to toss out two bombs at a time instead of just one, doubling his bombing effectiveness. It never runs out unless Opa-Opa is killed, and at such a low price, it is a must-buy.
Fantasy Zone II shop Big Bomb.png Big Bomb
$2000
(+ $1000)
Big Bombs have twice the offensive power as Opa-Opa's standard bombs. They are also slightly easier to hit with due to their larger size.
Fantasy Zone II shop Twin Big Bombs.png Twin Big Bombs
$4800
(+ $2000)
The power of Big Bombs with the frequency of Twin Bombs. Although they are the most expensive bombs you can buy, they're worth every penny.
Fantasy Zone II shop Fire Bomb.png Fire Bomb
$2000
(+ $500)
The Fire Bomb is a bomb that explodes with a fiery blast to the lest and right when it hits a target. It does a lot of damage to whatever it hits, and the blasts go on to destroy anything that gets in their way. It is difficult to use effectively, but it's price rises the least out of the three special bombs. However, you can chase one of the flames all the way across the stage and watch it cause substantial damage to enemies.
Fantasy Zone II shop Smart Bomb.png Smart Bomb
$2000
(+ $1000)
Smart Bombs instantly damage every enemy on the screen. As a result, there is no visible effect beyond the destruction of small enemies and bullets. It has the same strength as a single Twin Shot, so it's not effective against bases or bosses. It should be used as a way to rescue Opa-Opa if he is surrounded by small enemies or bullets.
Fantasy Zone II shop Heavy Bomb.png Heavy Bomb
$2000
(+ $1000)
The Heavy Bomb is the probably the most effective bomb. It crushes bases and is quite effective against a number of bosses. It drops from the sky, and has a tendency to fall behind Opa-Opa so it is important to position him correctly before using it. (The 16t indication on the side is a reference to British sketch comedy show "Monty Python's Flying Circus).

Other items[edit]

Item Name
Price
Description
Fantasy Zone II shop Extra Ship.png Extra Ship
$5000, $20000
You will not earn extra lives by reaching particular scores. Instead, your only means of obtaining extra lives is to purchase them at the shop. The initial asking price is $5000 and increases dramatically for each ship. However, some secret shops have bargain deals if you can find them.
Fantasy Zone II shop Auto Beam.png Auto Beam
$10000
This item is an upgrade to Opa-Opa's weapons system which enables him to fire any weapon rapidly, simply by holding down the fire button. Tremendously helpful, especially when used in combination with the Big Shot.
Fantasy Zone II shop Red Bottle.png Red Bottle
$9000
Opa-Opa starts the game with a short power meter which doesn't provide a lot of stamina. However, it's possible to increase the length of the meter by purchasing (or collecting) Red Bottles. As long as you can afford them, you should purchase a Red Bottle every chance you get. Be on the look out for hidden free Red Bottles as well.
Fantasy Zone II shop Blue Bottle.png Blue Bottle
$8000
While a Red Bottle extends Opa-Opa's health meter, it does not fill it. Blue Bottles are the ones which replenish Opa-Opa's energy. When shopping, remember to always buy a Red Bottle before buying a Blue one. Hidden Blue Bottles can also be discovered for free.
Fantasy Zone II shop Shield.png Shield
$12000
After purchasing a shield, an energy field will appear around Opa-Opa, protecting him from a number of enemy attacks before disappearing.
Fantasy Zone II shop Continue Game.png Continue Game
$20000
Once you lose all of your lives, the game does not let you continue from the round you died in unless you fork out some cash to buy a continue opportunity. Without this, you will be forced to start the game from round 1.
