Faulty Towers start screen (ZX).png

You will first have to connect your Sinclair ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64 and cassette recorder to your television set, then switch all three of them on; once you have done this, you shall have to insert the cassette for Harbour Soft's 1984 text adventure game Faulty Towers into the recorder, type LOAD "" (without leaving a space between the quotation marks), then press Enter to load the program into the console. The game shall then proceed to the start screen shown above (however, the image is of the ZX version, as the C64 version's uses different colours and a less medieval-looking font) as the text "Press any key to continue" flashes at the bottom of it - and once you have done so the game will proceed to the second start screen shown below.

Faulty Towers start screen 2 (ZX).png

The text "Press any key to continue" again flashes at the bottom of the second start screen, and once you have done so, it will proceed to the third start screen shown below; it explains that Sybil and the other characters will occasionally set tasks for Basil that he has to complete within a specific number of moves (which varies depending on the task) but he will not know in advance how long he has for the job. If he fails to complete a task in time, he will lose his sanity and be taken away to a mental hospital - and the text of "Press any key to continue" again flashes at the bottom of the third start screen.

Faulty Towers start screen 3 (ZX).png

Once you have done so the game will start; however, in the C64 version Basil says What next mate? at the end of a description instead of What now?.
