Axl Low is a British time traveler from the 20th century. He enters the Sacred Knights Tournament in hopes of finding a way back to his time period and his girlfriend. Axl is a master of Kusarigamajutsu. His name and appearance is based on Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose.
Axl Low fights using his kusarigama, giving his attacks excellent range as compared to the other fighters. He can act as a good fighter for beginners looking to go through the game by playing keep-away, but using Axl effectively requires some practice. His great range comes with its trade-offs, one being his health. Attacks do a bit more damage to Axl than the other fighters, so make sure you know how your opponent's move set works before jumping into a fight. Exercise those reflexes by starting on a lower difficulty and practice his attacks in training mode. Another downside to playing as Axl is his speed. Missing hits comes with a hefty price, leaving him vulnerable to the opponent's attacks for a large amount of time. Though Axl's range allows him to take some easy victories, his learning curve should not be taken lightly.
As an AI, Axl will constantly try to zone and use his range against you. Never let him get too much distance; combo him into a corner if you have to. Axl won't have many alternatives once his guard breaks.

Chipp Zanuff is an American who formerly worked for the mafia as a drug dealer. This was until he ended up becoming addicted to the drugs he sold, and the mafia didn't have much use for him anymore. After a ninja saved his life and took him under his care, teaching the young Chipp about honor, repentance, and the art of ninjutsu, Chipp turned his life around and became the ninja's loyal apprentice. Eventually, his mentor is assassinated and Chipp enters the tournament to punish the people responsible.
The greatest thing Chipp has going for him is his speed. His ninja-like move set is comparable to that of Strider Hiryu's, but you should only use Chipp if he's up to your own pace. If you're having trouble against one of the other quicker characters in the game, use dashes with Gamma Blade to trap opponents. If you trap your opponent with Chipp's Gamma Blade, they'll try to get away by jumping - use this opportunity to try out some air combos and knock your opponent back into the corner. Chipp is also effective with tricking the AI - give your opponent the idea that you're going to perform a high attack, then attack low. Though taking advantage of Chipp's speed to perform feints is an effective method to mastering the fighter, try out some other techniques; Chipp's speedy attacks can create a variety of combos that can knock opponents out with ease.
Against Chipp, watch out for his dashes and anti-air attacks. Jumping over him won't work, so you'll have to guard and counter if you want to avoid his attacks.

Before the start of Guilty Gear, Dr. Baldhead was a successful surgeon loved by all. This was until he was conspired against by rival surgeons, who made him believe that he allowed a little girl in his care to perish. When she died, Dr. Baldhead lost all sanity and became a violent murderer. Eventually, he was incarcerated, but freed by a mysterious stranger. This was when Baldhead entered the tournament, using a giant scalpel to slash his way to victory. Though Baldhead disappears after Guilty Gear, he later evolves into the character Faust in Guilty Gear X.
Dr. Baldhead is the most violent character in the game, using his scalpel to slash open opponents and form a bloody mess. His unpredictability and strange mannerisms make him seem out-of-place in the world of Guilty Gear (and more suited for the world of Mortal Kombat), but that's exactly what gives Baldhead the advantage in battle. His attacks can make some serious chains, especially when he grabs the opponent and begins a frenzy of slashes which the opponent can't escape. If you're looking for an unconventional fighter with some easily-formed combos, look no further than Dr. Baldhead.
Against Baldhead, try to keep your distance lest you get caught up in one of his inescapable combos. Though Baldhead's scalpel is quite large, he lacks in the range department - this includes his special. With not much range, it's easily avoidable and hard to land.
In events before the start of Guilty Gear, Kliff Undersn was the leader of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights and a hero of the Crusades. He was inspired to do great things for the world after almost being murdered by a rampaging Gear, only to be saved by none other than Sol Badguy. His gigantic sword, the Dragonslayer, was even given to him as a gift for his accomplishments during the Crusades. Kliff continued to lead the order until handing the title of leader to a sixteen-year-old Ky Kiske, leaving the protection of the world in the hands of Ky and Sol. Guilty Gear takes place five years after the Crusades, with Kliff living out the rest of his life in peaceful retirement. This is when he finds a flyer for the mysterious tournament. Sensing danger, Kliff enters the tournament to get to the bottom of its mysterious purpose.
Kliff Undersn is the typical powerhouse fighter of the game. His attacks deal more damage than the average fighter's, but, as a balance to his extraordinary power, Kliff is an incredibly slow character. Trapping enemies in combos is no easy task with Kliff, but as long as you can stun the opponent or knock them off their feet, Kliff has some time to nail them with his next move. Also, Kliff does happen to have a couple of projectile attacks up his sleeve. He can launch a fire ball at the opponent (the level of the attack determines the range of the fireball) and he can even hurt the opponent with his taunt.
As an AI, Kliff won't have much of a strategy besides slashing you into a corner with his powerful attacks. They shouldn't be too tough to dodge, though, and landing attacks on Kliff shouldn't be a hard job, either; Kliff can't even dash.

Ky Kiske is a main character of Guilty Gear alongside his rival, Sol Badguy. Ky has a strong idea of justice, which sometimes doesn't allow him to see beyond black and white. However, he is chivalrous and diligent, and if he senses one of his allies acting in a way which is morally wrong, he's the first to act. Ky became the young leader of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights after Kliff Undersn retired, and he later joined the International Police Force where he became a captain. Ky enters the tournament after hearing of the rumors surrounding it, including the selection of a new Sacred Order of Holy Knights by way of the tournament.
Ky's attacks are heavily influenced by his element, lightning (in accordance with his weapon, Thunderseal). Like Sol, Ky is a good choice for beginners. His agility allows him to move quicker than Sol, and his lightning attacks give him more range. However, it's best to utilize close combat when performing combos with Ky. His lightning-inducing slash attacks work well to stun the opponent; couple this with some of Ky's more basic attacks (uppercuts, flying kicks, etc.) for some unbreakable combos. When fighting tougher opponents (especially if you want to beat the game using no continues), you may want to focus on playing keep-away with some of Ky's more ranged attacks.

May became an orphan when she lost her parents at a young age. Johnny (who makes his playable debut in Guilty Gear X), the leader of a group of sky-pirates dedicated to helping the less fortunate, took her in and gave her the name "May" when he found her on May 5th. Over the years, May grew close to Johnny, and developed an unwavering dedication to him. May enters the tournament for the sole purpose of breaking Johnny out of prison after he stole from the rich to give to the poor.
May is one of the more complex characters in Guilty Gear. Her abilities range from being able to attack with a giant anchor (despite her size) and summoning aquatic creatures to aid her in combat. Her enormous weapon doesn't make her any quicker, nor does it give her much of a decent range. In addition, she doesn't have any anti-air attacks which are as effective as they should be. However, if you learn how to make the most of May's advantages, her disadvantages won't be too major. The average power she attacks with is actually her maximum power; some of May's simplest attacks can cause some serious damage.

Millia Rage was forced into assassination at a young age. Deciding that the life of an assassin wasn't the fate she wanted, she attempted suicide several times, but failed each time. Eventually, the Assassin's Guild placed the forbidden beast Angra in her body, allowing her to control her hair and use it in combat. Over the years, she develops a complex relationship with Zato-1, and though she did have feelings for him, she becomes fearful of Zato-1's obsession with her becoming the perfect assassin. Millia chooses freedom from the life of an assassin over Zato-1 and informs the International Police Force of the whereabouts of the Assassin's Guild and Zato. Zato is sent to prison, which he escapes shortly before the events of Guilty Gear's tournament, and Millia enters the tournament to kill Zato for good.
Definitely one of Guilty Gear's stranger combatants, Millia Rage uses her hair as her primary weapon. Her range isn't great, but her speed makes up for it. Though her attacks are a bit on the complex side, perform them correctly and, with a speedy recovery time and quick execution, you can form some deadly combos.

Potemkin is a slave working under the empire of Zepp. Serving as an unwilling soldier in the military, he is sent to fight in the tournament by order of Zepp Military superior Sergeant Gabriel. Despite his appearance, Potemkin is actually an intelligent and thoughtful individual. He has a strong dislike of fighting, only doing so when it is absolutely necessary.
Potemkin is the very personification of strength; he looks like a brute, and he attacks like one. Players looking for a quick-paced fighter should look past Potemkin. His fighting style is simple and straightforward in that he can't chain many attacks to form powerful combos, but the few attacks he can string together pack a powerful punch. Typically, he's also slow, but one quick combo of Chipp's may cause the same amount of damage as only a few attacks from Potemkin. Range is another one of his strong points, so as long as you keep your opponent away from you, speed shouldn't be much of a problem. Though Potemkin is slow and his simple combos don't leave much to the imagination, his strength, range, and the simplicity of his fighting style makes him a force to be reckoned with who anyone can pick up and play as.

Sol Badguy is a gear who once worked with the Holy Sacred Order along with his lifelong rival, Ky Kiske. Though he appears to be a brash and reckless bounty hunter, Sol is more intelligent and caring than he lets on. He's an anti-hero who can be considered the main protagonist of the series, and Sol has a passion for rock and roll, especially his favorite band, Queen.
Sol Badguy is the most balanced character in the game. The ultimate introductory character, Sol's fighting style is somewhat similar to Ryu's of Street Fighter. Wielding his elemental sword, Fireseal, most of Sol's attacks have some relation to fire. His range is decent and he can form some crazy combos with simple button combinations. He's also slower than Ky, but stronger to make up for it. Overall, he's not the most outrageous character in the game, and serves as a good representation to the basic fighting style that makes up Guilty Gear.

Zato-1 is a man who sacrificed his eyesight to achieve greater power; when he allowed the Forbidden Beast Eddie into his body, he was given the ability to manipulate shadows. A successful assassin in the Assassin's Guild who had strong feelings for Millia Rage before she betrayed him, Zato was taken into custody by the International Police Force and was thrown into prison. At the start of Guilty Gear, Testament releases Zato from his prison, giving him a chance to participate in the upcoming tournament. Zato, feeling nothing but hate for Millia after her betrayal, enters the tournament to set things right.
Zato-1 takes advantage of his shadow manipulation abilities in combat, relying heavily on the forms his shadows take to attack the opponent. Though Zato is one of the toughest characters to master in Guilty Gear, he can also be one of the most devastating. One of the more technical characters in the game, Zato can use his shadows to play keep-away. With attacks that allow him to bring his shadows up from below the opponent's feet, attacking up-close and directly may not be the best course of action when playing as Zato. Though Zato can be hard to master, he does have a nice perk; jumping and dashing gives him temporary transformation into a demon (similar, in a way, to Demitri from Capcom'sDarkstalkers).

Baiken (梅喧) is one of three boss characters in Guilty Gear (the others being Justice and Testament) and must be unlocked for play. To unlock her, beat the game as either Sol Badguy or Ky Kiske with no continues. After the credits finish rolling, you'll face a secret battle with Baiken.
When Baiken was a child, Gears attacked her hometown, violently slaughtering everyone before her eyes - including her parents. Additionally, her left eye was gouged out and her right arm was severed. After the traumatic experience, the only thing on Baiken's mind was revenge. Wanting nothing more than to bring the Gears and their creator to a bloody end, she trained herself in the use of the katana and dedicated her life to achieving vengeance.
Baiken is no stranger to turtling. She may be tricky to get used to at first, but with the right timing and the continued use of her Tatami attack, stringing combos isn't as tough as it initially seems. Though you can easily opt for an all-offensive button-mashing strategy, Baiken is much more effective when put in a defensive position. This isn't to say that she can't be aggressive with said strategic make-up; Baiken can maintain some strong combos and pressure the opponent nicely while keeping a strong guard. Unfortunately, this strategy also doesn't leave much room for error; mess up the timing and Baiken will end up trapped in the opponent's combo. If you're on a difficulty which is high enough, some opponents may even begin to anticipate your use of the strategy. Practice timing before jumping into battle.
Justice is one of three boss characters in Guilty Gear (the others being Baiken and Testament) and is the final boss of the game. Upon defeating her, you'll see your fighter's ending and she will be unlocked.
The first complete Gear to have a will of its own and the main antagonist of the game. Fed up with the way humans ruled the world and Gears lived under them, Justice acted as a leader of the Gears and started the hundred-year war between Gears and humans known as the Crusades; Justice is a good example of a Gear gone wrong. She is eventually captured and brought into prison by the Sacred Order of Holy Knights, but shortly before the events of Guilty Gear, she is released by Testament. Now out to wreak havoc once again, Justice waits at the end of the tournament for any fighter strong enough to fight their way to the top.
Justice is a mecha in a game of human fighters. You can expect her to be powerful against the many combatants who stand in her way. She has above-average mobility, reach, defense, and attack power. Though combos may be tough to pull off when you first play as her, practice her attacks and take control of the most over-powered character in the game. Justice doesn't have a charge, and she doesn't need one. Her Imperial Ray attack has great range, does a great deal of damage, and stuns the enemy quickly. Her Omega Laser racks up well over fifteen hits. Additionally, Valkyrie Arc allows her to counter all attacks, no matter where they hit. As a boss, Justice is deadly and cheap. If you manage to defeat her, then claim your reward in the form of an all-powerful mecha fighter.

Testament is one of three boss characters in Guilty Gear (the others being Baiken and Justice) and is the sub-boss who must be defeated before the battle with the final boss, Justice. Beat the game to unlock him.
Testament was a human before he made his conversion into a Gear. As a human, he was kind, gentle, pacifistic. He had a strong hatred of violence; this didn't help him much as a knight of the Sacred Order. Testament was a participant in the Crusades, and as he saw death all around him, his mentality wasn't able to keep its stability. After becoming a Gear, Testament showed loyalty to the leader of all Gears, Justice, and became her puppet.
A boss on a difficulty level almost as high as Justice's, Testament is not an opponent to be taken lightly. His quick combos leave barely any room for counterattacks, and as his attacks pile up, so does the damage you take. Like Justice, Testament also doesn't have a charge. His flashy move set consists of scythe slashes, summons, and strange magic. However, he isn't as easy to get control of as he may seem. Beyond his flashy move set is attacks that work best when timed correctly with a good set-up. Though he has great range and his moves make high damage, he has slow recovery time and effectiveness with Testament requires a bit of strategy.
