Halley's Comet is a vertical scrolling shooter arcade game which was put out by Taito Corporation in 1986, and licensed to Coin-It Co. for manufacturing and distribution in the United States; it runs on its own dedicated hardware (a Motorola M6809 running at 4.992 MHz and a Zilog Z80 running at 3 MHz with a quartet of General Instrument AY-3-8910s running at 1.5 MHz for audio). The player has to use an 8-way joystick to take control of a spaceship, with a pair of buttons to make it fire shots and smart-bombs at the various enemies - and there are a total of thirty unique stages in the game. In 1989, ITL converted this game for the Famicom Disk System, under the name of Halley Wars (this version was also ported to Sega Game Gear in 1991, and released as Space Battle in South Africa); furthermore, the original version was included in the Japan-exclusive compilation, Taito Memories II Gekan, for the Sony PlayStation 2 in 2007, and almost fourteen years later on January 28, 2021, it was ported to the Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation 4 as part of Hamster Corporation's Arcade Archives franchise.
