Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia is a turn-based strategy game pitting armies of wizards, gremlins, demons, dragons and other magical creatures against each other. Each player begins with a single town, which can be expanded and improved to over the course of the game. The towns contain creature dwellings from which the player's heroes recruit warriors to battle their enemies with. In the original game, there are eight different towns, and with Armageddon's Blade a ninth, Conflux, was introduced.

Two expansion packs were released to complement the original game: Armageddon's Blade (September 30, 1999), and The Shadow of Death (March 31, 2000). A final compendium version, Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete, was released containing the original game and both expansions. Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete (Collector's Edition) is a version of Heroes of Might and Magic III which is comprised of the original version, the Armageddon's Blade expansion pack, the Shadow of Death expansion pack, and a number of special elements. It was released both for Windows and for Macintosh, allowing the Macintosh players to finally obtain the two expansions, which were not released for their platform separately.

There is also a compilation called Heroes of Might and Magic: Millennium Edition that consisted of Heroes of Might and Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic II with its expansion and Heroes of Might and Magic III without the expansions.
