Game Structure[edit]

The player controls Kirby during his mission to reassemble the Star Rod and reach the Fountain of Dreams. Kirby must venture through seven different worlds. In each world there is a certain number of levels, which become progressively accessible and a boss to be defeated after completing them all. Whenever Kirby lands on a world map, only the first level will be accessible. As you complete the levels, more and more areas will become accessible. To access a specific area, simply go in front of the relevant door and press Up dpad.

In each level, Kirby must advance, avoiding or killing the enemies he encounters along the way and overcoming various obstacles. By killing enemies, your score will increase. The goal is simply to get to the end of the level. In some levels then, you will meet mini-bosses that you will be forced to defeat to continue or some simple puzzle to solve to get bonuses. In some levels, there are also special hidden switches that, once pressed, will open new areas in the world you are. The end of each level features a star-studded door. Also, every time you finish a level, you'll find yourself on top of a trampoline. You will have to press A button at the right time, to jump as high as possible. The higher you jump, the more bonus points you get. If you manage to perform a perfect jump, you will be rewarded with an extra life. Once you complete a level, you can re-enter it whenever you want.

At the beginning of the game Kirby has 4 lives available and is vital energy is made up of six notches. Whenever Kirby comes in contact with an enemy or touches something dangerous, he loses a notch of energy. If his life energy runs out, he loses a life and has to restart the level over from the last area reached. In addition, a life is immediately lost by falling into the void. Kirby can restore his life energy or gain extra lives by finding certain items. Losing all lives is game over. In this case, you have two options. By selecting CONTINUE, you can restart the game from the last level reached. By selecting GAME END, you will restart the game from the beginning.

The typical game screen is shown below:

The game is provided with a game pak, that can save up to three data files containing your progress. The game automatically saves after you complete a level. In this way, you can restart the game later from the last level reached, by selecting the saved file from the initial screen, next to which the percentage of the game completed is also reported. You also have the option to delete saved games.

After finishing the game, you will be shown the percentage of the game completed. Only by finding all switches and fully unlocking the map of all worlds can you reach 100%. At this point you will have the possibility to restart the game with a higher difficulty level (with a maximum of three notches of vital energy), or to play minigames.

Kirby’s Moves[edit]

Kirby can walk, run, jump, squat and swim in water. He can also fly, inflating like a balloon and expelling air pellets from his mouth before landing.

Kirby can attack enemies in many ways. By killing them, your score will increase. Kirby’s basic attack consists of inhaling enemies, then expelling them in the form of stars. With these stars, Kirby can strike and eliminate other enemies. However, there are some enemies that cannot be inhaled and others that are indestructible. If Kirby inhales two or more enemies simultaneously, he can launch a more powerful attack, capable of eliminating multiple enemies in succession. After inhaling an enemy, Kirby enlarges and cannot inhale other enemies until expelled. Also, while he's enlarged, Kirby can't fly. Alternatively, Kirby is able to take out enemies directly, with a slide attack. He can inflate and expel air pellets from his mouth, which are quite weak but still capable of taking out smaller enemies. He can also headbutt enemies, falling from great heights.

Kirby's best skill, however, is that he can replicate the attacks of some of the enemies he encounters. After inhaling an enemy, pressing Down dpad Kirby will swallow it, rather than expel it from his mouth. If that enemy was provided with a special attack, Kirby will acquire it and can use it in turn. These attacks can be very useful for taking out enemies more easily. For more information on the acquired skill, press Start button. There are also certain areas within the levels, which can only be reached by using an enemy's attack. With a few exceptions, the acquired skill can be used without limits, until Kirby is hit by an enemy. In this case, Kirby will lose the special attack, which will come out of him in the form of a jumping star, which will disappear after a few seconds. However, if Kirby manages to suck up this star in time, by pressing Down dpad he will be able to acquire the lost ability again. You can also voluntarily give up the acquired power whenever you want by pressing Select button. For the list of all the skills that can be acquired, see the relevant page.

While underwater, Kirby is unable to attack enemies in normal ways. He can only puff a short-range watersprout to attack enemies. Some powers acquired from enemies, however, can also be used underwater.

The Worlds[edit]

On the map of each world you will meet many entrances, in particular:
