All items on this page are presented three times. The large item in blue is how the item appears on the NES/Famicom version. The small item in red is how the item appears in the original MSX version, and the small item in green below it is how the item appears in the graphically enhanced MSX2 version.

Drop Items

Drop Items are items that are left behind by defeated enemies. Every defeated enemy will leave an item behind. Items will only stick around so long before disappearing if they are not collected. This game has a tendency to provide you with the item that you are most in need of. If you have no keys, most enemies will provide you with keys. If you are very low on magic, you can expect to earn potions from defeated enemies. If you find yourself with very high amounts of life, magic, keys, and money, you can expect to find more poisons, which you should avoid. Scrolls, rings, and crosses appear on a random basis.

Bread Potion
Dragon Slayer IV item bread NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item bread MSX.png Eating bread restores 5 units of health to your Life meter. Bread that is found inside treasure chests will restore your Life meter until it reaches 99. Dragon Slayer IV item potion NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item potion MSX.png Drinking potions restores 5 units of magic to your Magic meter. Potion that is found inside treasure chests will restore your Magic meter until it reaches 99.

Money Key
Dragon Slayer IV item money NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item money MSX.png Collecting gold from a defeated enemy will add 2 units of gold to your wallet. Collecting gold from treasure chests will increase your bank account by 50. Dragon Slayer IV item key NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item key MSX.png Picking up a key from a defeated enemy will add 1 key to your collection. Collecting keys from treasure chests will expand your key ring by 20.

Scroll Ring
Dragon Slayer IV item scroll NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item scroll MSX.png Grabbing a scroll will immediately speed up your character for a limited period of time. While sped up, you run faster, jump farther, and shoot your weapon farther. As a penalty however, your weapon gets a little weaker. Collecting consecutive scrolls before the effects wear off can increase your speed up to three times. Dragon Slayer IV item ring NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item ring MSX.png Collect the ring to become invulnerable for a limited period of time. During this time, you will appear translucent, and the enemies will be unable to attack and harm you. You can touch them without penalty and even use them to reach higher locations if they cooperate.

Poison Cross
Dragon Slayer IV item poison NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item poison MSX.png Touching these vials of potion will immediately drain your health meter by five life points. Avoid collecting them whenever they appear. Dragon Slayer IV item cross NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item cross MSX.png Touch the cross to immediately annihilate all enemies present in your current room. It can only destroy enemies that are fully present, and will not destroy newly forming eggs.

Equipment

Although nearly every item can be purchased in stores, you should not purchase anything besides Crystals, Magic Bottles, and Elixirs if necessary. Every single item listed below, with the single exception of the shield, can be found in treasure chests throughout the dungeon. If you search thoroughly, you will be able to find every item and save your precious gold for Inns, and the Shield if you can locate the hidden shop that it is sold in.

Consumable items

Items that are used up after one use.

Item Who can use it? Description
Dragon Slayer IV item magic bottle NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item magic bottle MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Magic Bottle: Activating the Magic Bottle will restore a family member's magic meter back to 99 points, but only if their magic is currently empty. If it is active when that member runs out of magic, it will immediately refuel their meter. Each bottle can only be used once.
Dragon Slayer IV item magic bottle MSX2.png Dragon Slayer IV Lyll sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Pochi sprite.png
Dragon Slayer IV item elixer NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item elixer MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Elixir: Like the Magic Bottle, the Elixir will resupply a family member's life meter with 99 units of health. It will only do this if that member's health reaches 0, which means it must be active when the player runs out of health, or they will die before they have a chance to activate it.

Dragon Slayer IV item crystal NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item crystal MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Crystal: The crystal ball is a magical device that will immediately warp a family member to the outside entrance of the dungeon, no matter where they are. The moment it is activated, the player is teleported, and the crystal disappears.

Permanent items

Sorted according to the walkthrough.

Item Who can use it? Description
Dragon Slayer IV item glove NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item glove MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Glove: The glove is a tool of tremendous importance to Xemn. Wearing the gloves gives Xemn the ability to move blocks in eight different directions, one square at a time. Using the gloves to achieve the results you desire takes some practice, and is expanded upon in the Moving blocks section of this guide.
Retriever: Pochi.

Dragon Slayer IV item power knuckle NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item power knuckle MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Power Knuckle: This glove empowers its wearer by increasing their attack power by four times (or 8 in the original MSX version). Only Pochi cannot make use of this item. Wearing the glove makes Roas and Lyll's attack stronger than Xemn's natural attack, while it boosts Xemn's attack power through the roof.
Retriever: Pochi.

Dragon Slayer IV item powered boots NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item powered boots MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Powered Boots: These boots are an invaluable tool which allow Xemn, Roas and Lyll to attack and destroy enemies without using any Magic. Simply jump on the enemies to crush them. This is one of the few items that will allow them to attack enemies after their magic has been drained. Note that if you can't jump, you will not be able to use the boots to attack.
Retriever: Xemn and Lyll.

Dragon Slayer IV item mattock NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item mattock MSX.png Mattock: This tool is a pick-ax that can only be wielded by Lyll. At the cost of one unit of magic power, Lyll can swing the Mattock at a block and destroy it. It can be used to destroy blocks in front of Lyll, or those at her feet. Smashing blocks allows Lyll to access new areas or find blocked off treasures.
Retriever: Xemn, using his glove.
Dragon Slayer IV item mattock MSX2.png Dragon Slayer IV Lyll sprite.png
Dragon Slayer IV item shield NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item shield MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Shield: This magical shield is a unique piece of equipment in that it can only be found in a shop, and must be bought for the hefty price of 95 gold. It grants the holder immunity from the projectile attacks of each crown guardian. In the MSX and NES version, only Lyll can discover the location of this shop, while in the MSX2 version, it is Roas alone who can access this shop, and only after two crowns have been collected.
Retriever: Lyll.

Dragon Slayer IV item fire rod NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item fire rod MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Fire Rod: Equipping this rod will double the range of its holder's attack. It allows Roas and Lyll's attack to practically reach the end of the screen. Even Pochi can use this item to increase his attack range to the range of Xemn. Each use of the Fire Rod requires one additional unit of magic, causing each attack to cost two units of magic.
Retriever: Lyll.

Dragon Slayer IV item hit rod NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item hit rod MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Hit Rod: Meyna too has the ability to manipulate blocks, but her control over them is somewhat limited. By striking a block with the Hit Rod, Meyna infuses a block with a tremendous amount of kinetic energy and sends it flying. It will bounce back and forth off walls (or off Meyna) until the energy dissipates and it immediately comes to rest. Any enemies caught in its path are destroyed.
Retriever: Xemn.
Dragon Slayer IV item hit rod MSX2.png
Dragon Slayer IV item key stick NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item key stick MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Key Stick: This magic item has the ability to unlock any locked door without the need for a key. Instead, it requires one unit of magic. Only Meyna has the magical ability to use it, and only she can get through the long corridors of locked doors found in the bottom of the dungeon. Note that she cannot use the key stick if a block is still moving under the influence of the hit rod.
Retriever: Xemn using the glove; Lyll using the mattock; Meyna using the hit rod.
Dragon Slayer IV item key stick MSX2.png
Dragon Slayer IV item wings NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item wings MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Wings: The wings can only be used exclusively by Meyna. When she activates them, it will allow her to move anywhere around the screen permitted by the terrain. However, as long as the wings are active, Meyna's magic meter will continue to drain slowly. Wings are handy to access hard to reach locations, or to fly over long beds of spikes and dangerous enemies.
Retriever: Lyll.
Dragon Slayer IV item wings MSX2.png
Dragon Slayer IV item jump shoes NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item jump shoes MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Meyna sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Jump Shoes: The jump shoes enable its wearer to jump twice as high at the cost of one magic unit. Even though Meyna and Roas can equip these boots, the only member of the family that they truly benefit is Lyll. Even though Lyll already possesses tremendous jumping abilities, the Jump Shoes propel her into the air and allow her to reach otherwise unreachable sections of the dungeon. Lyll must make use of these shoes in order to access important treasures.
Retriever: Meyna, using the wings retrieved by Lyll.
Dragon Slayer IV item jump shoes MSX2.png Dragon Slayer IV Lyll sprite.png
Dragon Slayer IV item armor NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item armor MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Xemn sprite.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Armor: Donning the armor will allow Xemn and Roas to crash into enemies with little to no consequences, often killing the enemies immediately upon contact. Wearing the armor causes the owner's magic meter to slowly drain. Note that the armor does not grant perfect invulnerability; you can still get hurt by strong enemies before they are defeated!
Retriever: Meyna.

Dragon Slayer IV item crown NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item crown MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Crown: There are four crowns scattered throughout the dungeon. They are guarded by fearsome monsters. Upon finding and touching a crown, that family member is warped to the den of the crown's guardian. The crowns can only be collected by defeating the guardian. Only Roas can actually make use of them. When he stands below one of the many paintings of Princess Celina, he will be warped to some other location in the dungeon. In the NES and original MSX version, you need all four crowns before Roas can make use of this item. In the MSX2 version, some paintings can be activated with only two crowns, or even a single crown.

Dragon Slayer IV item dragon slayer NES.png Dragon Slayer IV item dragon slayer MSX.png Dragon Slayer IV Roas sprite.png Dragon Slayer: The Dragon Slayer is the ultimate sword, and the only weapon capable of defeating the King Dragon entrapped in the painting. Only a descendant of the wizard who originally trapped the dragon in the painting can wield it and defeat the dragon once and for all. Roas is the descendant destined to perform this dangerous task.
