This page describes the character growth logic of all characters in MapleStory. In MapleStory, all characters will grow in power at a particular level, which will unlock the Job Advancement quest. The requirement of the quest depends on the job, while for a few jobs, job advancements are awarded automatically once the level is met without doing anything more.

1st Job

1st job unlocks at Level 10. For some jobs, the character starts from level 1, while for some jobs, the character will skip to level 10 with the 1st job already unlocked automatically (usually jobs with an introductory cutscene).

For Dual Blades, an intermediate 1st+ job will unlock at Level 20 too.

2nd Job

2nd job unlocks at Level 30. For Dual Blades, an intermediate 2nd+ job will unlock at Level 45 too.

Dual Blades would need 2 Dual Blade Training Books for 2nd job and 2nd+ job. They can be bought from NPC Taeha at the Secret Garden Basement, for 100,000 mesos each (before guild passive / Cadena passive discounts)

  • 2nd job: 1 (Slash Storm)
  • 2nd+ job: 1 (Flying Assaulter)

3rd Job

3rd job unlocks at Level 60. For Dual Blades, 2 Dual Blade Training Books are also needed for 3rd job skills: Mirror Image and Shadow Meld. They can be bought from NPC Taeha at the Secret Garden Basement, for 100,000 mesos each (before guild passive / Cadena passive discounts).

4th Job

4th job unlocks at Level 100. For 4th Job Skills, most skills require the use of mastery books to lift the skill maximum limit, as they will be limited to level 10. Some skills are exempted however. Cygnus Knights except Mihile do not need any mastery books, while all other jobs including Mihile would need Mastery Books. They can be obtained from NPC Booklerman in Leafre, or NPC Luna in Henesys General Store, or NPC Bung's Mama in Korean Folk Town, or NPC Sly in Leafre General Store (guild passive or Cadena passive will be applied, and the prices stated are before discounts)

  • Mastery Book 20 costs 3,000,000 (3 million) mesos each
  • Mastery Book 30 costs 5,000,000 (5 million) mesos each

When taking down Root Abyss bosses, the special merchant NPC Le Blanc may appear at a chance, and it might sell a mastery book too. Normal mode will sell Book 20 while Chaos mode will sell Book 30 at 100,000 mesos. However, the purchase limit is shared across the party, which is 1 unit.

Books bought using mesos are tradable.

Alternatively, certain contents may award Mastery Boxes, which are untradeable can be used in place of 1 Book 20 or 1 Book 30 of your choice. It can be exchanged for 500 Spell Traces too.

  • Dimension Library (level 100+): 1 per episode completed, up to 3
  • Lion King's Castle (level 110+): 2
  • Silent Crusade (level 120+): 2 (given upon clearing Chapter 3)
  • Fantastic Theme Park (level 120+): 2
  • Korean Folk Town (level 125+): 2
  • Root Abyss (level 125+): 1
  • Golden Temple (level 130+): 2
  • Crimsonwood Castle (level 130+): 2
  • Ancient Ruins Partem (level 135+): 1

Certain contents or events may also sell mastery books directly, using certain currecies. Books obtained from such contents are usually untradeable.

  • Evolving System Coin Shop: 50 Evolving Coins for Book 20, 75 Evolving Coins for Book 30 (coins from monsters inside Evolving System at a low chance)
  • Crusader Coin Shop: 65 Crusader Coins for Book 20, 100 Crusader Coins for Book 30 (coins from mystic gate bosses or certain general bosses or certain raid bosses)
  • Root Abyss Merchant: 4 Yggdrasil Stones for Book 20, 6 Yggdrasil Stones for Book 30 (1 Yggdrasil Stone is dropped per boss killed per mode, and it is given to the entire party at the same time when picked up)
  • Party Point Vendor: 90 PQ Points for Book 20, 120 PQ Points for Book 30 (10 PQ Points are given per Cross World Party Quest successful clear, and an extra 10 PQ Points for attempting 5 times in a single day through a separate quest)
  • Monster Life Coin Shop: 1,000 Monster Life Coins for Book 20, 2,000 Monster Life Coins for Book 30 (exchange 2,000 Waru for 1 Monster Life Coin using NPC Clara in most towns)
  • Zero's Temple: 5 Timic Coins for Book 20, 5 Timic Coins for Book 30 (coins from monsters in Mirror World at a low chance, only Zeroes can access Mirror World)
  • Shadow Coin Merchant: 8 Shadow Merchant Coin for Book 20, 12 Shadow Merchant Coin for Book 30 (1 coin from each Heliseum daily quest up to 3 per day, or 4 from killing Easy Magnus, harder modes will drop more coins)

Explorer Free Job Change

For explorer jobs, from Level 101 onwards, it is possible to change job within the same job type once per day. However, it comes with a huge cost. It can be done by going to the 4th job advancement NPC of the same job type and indicate that you do not like your job.

A job change is restricted to the same job type.

  • Warrior: Hero, Paladin, Dark Knight
  • Magician: Arch Mage (Fire, Poison), Arch Mage (Ice, Lightning), Bishop
  • Bowman: Bowmaster, Crossbow Master/Marksman
  • Thief: Shadower, Night Lord, Dual Blade
  • Pirate: Captain/Corsair, Viper/Buccaneer, Cannon Shooter

It cost 1 Free Job Advancement Coin or mesos for each job change. Free Job Advancement Coin can be obtained from coin shop events usually, and it is usually tradable within the account. For the meso payment, it increases with character level and every 2 times that the character changed job (this record does not reset), and it is calculated as such. (Source: http://www.inven.co.kr/board/maple/2304/15954)

  • Level 101~105:
  • Level 106 and above:

Where log10 is the logarithm function with 10 as the base, and N is the number of times that the character changed job so far (this record does not reset).

The precautions for the job change are as follows.

  • All equipment, V Matrix and Hyper Stats details remain the same. (A level 100 weapon box is given for you to try your new job, and thats about it) You may have to remake your weapon, secondary weapon, hyper stats and part of your V Matrix to match your new job, unless it already matches the new job.
    • In the case of the Genesis Weapon, the quest can still be continued using the new job. However, if the weapon type does not match the new job, it cannot be changed, so it must be thrown away to restart from the beginning.
  • All 4th job's mastery book records will be reset, so all mastery books need to be used again.
  • The 2nd to 4th job, and hyper skill SP will be reset (this does not increase the reset count for hyper skill reset).
  • If the character is changed from or to Captain/Corsair, Pure STR and Pure DEX will be swapped, and symbol equipment stats will be swapped to match the new job's primary stat. However, other item stats remain the same. You can use the link skill toggle by double clicking it to swap the applied STR and DEX stats (both % and non-%) for all equipment except weapon, secondary, emblem and symbol equipment.
  • Link Skill and Union will be changed to match the new job. The particular link skill on the receiving character will be unlinked partially (the other jobs with the same link skill will still continue to apply if they are not the same job).
  • Your Mu Lung Dojo and Ghost Park ranking record will be reset for that week, so you would have to redo using the new job.
  • You can only job change once per day per character, and the job change system is only available to Explorer faction jobs.

Child Of God, Zero

  • Total SP (on Zero Alpha and Zero Beta each): up till Level 200 (max 310 SP)

The starting SP will be automatically invested as such

  • 8 SP on 'Long Sword Mastery' for Zero Alpha and 'Great Sword Mastery' for Zero Beta.
  • 1 SP on 'Moon Strike' for Zero Alpha and 'Rising Slash' on Zero Beta.
  • 1 SP on 'Piercing Thrust' for Zero Alpha and 'Air Raid' for Zero Beta.

Hyper Skills

Hyper skills are unlocked at Level 140.

Hyper skils have 2 categories of SP: SP and AP. SP stands for Skill-Passive Points and AP stands for Active-skill Points. Every job has its unique SP and AP skill list, since their active skills will differ from jobs and their skill upgrades will depend on its job skills.

Zero will not receive any Hyper Skill SP as they are the Transcendents of Time, so they will receive Transcedent Skills instead of Hyper Skills, which are automatically mastered when certain levels are met for the specific skills.

The Hyper Skills points are distributed as such.

  • Level 140: 1 SP, 1 AP
  • Level 150: 1 SP
  • Level 160: 1 AP
  • Level 165: 1 SP
  • Level 180: 1 SP
  • Level 190: 1 SP, 1 AP

Total: 5 SP, 3 AP

Hyper Skills can be reset by paying mesos. The cost to reset increases each time you reset for the same character, and the record does not reset.

  • 1st time: 100,000 (100 thousand) mesos
  • 2nd time: 1,000,000 (1 million) mesos
  • 3rd time: 2,000,000 (2 million) mesos
  • 4th time: 5,000,000 (5 million) mesos
  • 5th time and beyond: 10,000,000 (10 million) mesos

When resetting hyper skills, the active hyper skills are also reset even though they are guaranteed to be learnt at the required levels, so remember to add those points back after resetting.

5th Job

5th job unlocks at Level 200. The requirement to advance to 5th job on top of reaching Level 200 is as such.

  • Equipped a weapon of at least 10 stars (weapon level 108 or higher to be possible)
  • Equipped a total of 100 stars across all your items. Guild passive effect will be counted.
  • Obtained 3 Arcane Stones from the following
    • Maple World's Transcendent (Enter from Henesys Bowman Instructional School)
    • Grandis' Transcendent (Enter from Pantheon's Temple Interior, quest require you to kill Magnus of any mode)
    • Otherworld's Transcendent (Enter from Corrupted World Tree, quest require you to enter the same portal found in 1 of the 3 top branch maps at random within 5 minutes)

5th job relies on the V Matrix, which operates heavily on Core Gemstones, or Nodestones, which are dropped by monsters in Arcane River or Grandis continent (about 1 in 2,500+ monsters at 1x drop rate). They will give a random core/node of your job (except Arachnid Reflection) when you open them (about 80% chance to get a Skill Enhance core/node, about 15% chance to get a new Skill core/node, about 5% chance to get a Special core/node). Within the Skill core/node, there is a higher chance of getting your job specific skills rather than skills that can be used by more than 1 job.

The tradability of the Core Gemstone/Nodestone depends on the method of acquisition.

  • Crafted using 35 Core Pieces, gachapon (given as a bundle of 10): Tradable
  • Dropped from monsters in Arcane River or Grandis continent: Tradable within account (Tradable in KMS)
  • Events: Untradeable (usually Tera burning or growth support rewards) or Tradable within account (usually general events that provide reward per world, but these can be untradeable too)

Arachnid Reflection core can be obtained from Will in Hard mode only.

Cores/Nodes will add 5th Job Abilities if it is equipped in your V Matrix. They can also be enhanced by feeding duplicates to level up to increase the abilities. Special cores cannot be enhanced.

Core Types

There are 4 types of cores.

  • Skill: Gives a new skill
  • Enhance: Enhance 3 existing skills except 5th Job Skills. (Base skill + 2 random skills)
  • Special: Gives effects when conditions are met. Expires in 7 days.
  • Condensed Experience: Provides 150 core EXP to a core of your choice, right click on the core of your choice to enhance it like normal. Cannot be equipped, cannot be destroyed and only obtainable from certain events.

Enhancing Cores

You can level up cores by feeding duplicates by talking to the V Core Master NPC in Arcane River. Right click the core you want to enhance and then click on the cores to feed them to the core you chose to enhance. For enhance type cores, duplicate is defined by 2 cores with same base skill. You cannot wear duplicate cores.

You can enhance up till Core Level 25.

Skill Core EXP

  • Core EXP Required to level up core:
  • Core EXP provided to another core if used for enhancement of another core (Core Level of core used is 1): 50
  • Core EXP provided to another core if used for enhancement of another core (Core Level of core used is 2 or higher): 50 + (Sum of Core EXP needed to reach that level and EXP)
  • Core EXP provided by "Condensed Experience" core: 150
