As with the original Pac-Man arcade game, bootleg arcade manufacturers produced a number of unauthorized copies and alterations to this game due to its tremendous popularity, and the arcade operators' insatiable appetite, to cash in on the craze. Once again, it wasn't enough to try and sell a straight clone of the original game; bootleggers competed with each other to create the most flashy modification that would attract more players. Most changes made to the game were purely cosmetic - by either altering the mazes, or the looks of the characters.

Ms. Pac-Man Plus

Ms. Pac-Man Plus gameplay.png
  • This hack of the original game (which predates Bally Midway's own Pac-Man Plus by a year), features four new mazes (the first is shown right).
  • The fruits follow the original maze patterns, which means that they sometimes cannot be eaten during their random bounce around the mazes.
  • The ghosts also slow down in some places, which can only make sense if you look at the original mazes and see where the tunnels would be.

Ms. Pac-Attack

  • This hack of the aforementioned Ms. Pac-Man Plus (which predates Pac-Attack by twelve years), features their four new mazes in a different order.
  • Once again, the fruits follow the original maze patterns, which means that they sometimes cannot be eaten during their bounce around the mazes.
  • The ghosts will also still slow down in some places, which can only make sense if you look at the old mazes and see where the tunnels would be.

Pac-Gal

  • This hack of the original game (the second half of its name is Southern United States slang for "girl"), changes the colors of the characters and mazes.
  • The Midway name has also been removed from the title screen, even though their old logo (the original game was the only one to feature it) is still there.
  • Pinky is colored white instead of pink in this hack (which means that he isn't named for his color any more), and Sue is colored yellow instead of orange.

Ms. Pac-Man Champion Edition

  • This hack of the aforementioned Ms. Pac-Attack (which was itself a hack of the aforementioned Ms. Pac-Man Plus), is also known as "Super Zola Pac-Gal", meaning that it could be a sequel to the aforementioned Pac-Gal, which was a hack of the original game.
  • Much like the original Pac-Man hack of Newpuc1, all the regular pellets have been changed into the shape of hearts. The bonus items have also been changed to the ones from the Jr. Pac-Man arcade game, and a timer has been added which gives Ms. Pac-Man (who moves faster than before) a single minute to clear the maze, before she automatically loses a life.
  • Inky has also been renamed to "Tony" on the title screen, and the Midway logo has also been changed to that of the dummy bootlegger corporation, "Rayglo Manufacturing Company".
