Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit's campaign takes place around Seacrest County, a fictitious county in the United States.

The game is split in two separate branches. The map of Seacrest County consists of various nodes, with each node containing various events. There are different types of events in each node, with different start and ending locations, and available vehicles.

Your rewards for completing races include unlocking new events, vehicles, an experience point reward, and a medal for each event. Racer events can earn you a Bronze, Silver, or Gold medal, while Cop events earn a Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

The different types of events include:

  • Preview: A one-player drive, involving a specific vehicle (usually one you haven't unlocked yet) from start to finish. Crossing the finish line in the requisite time yields a medal. No equipment is available. Available as both racer and cop. Cop previews feature time penalties for hitting obstacles (2 seconds) or traffic (3 seconds).
  • Hot Pursuit: Either race to be the first across the finish line as a racer, or eliminate all racers as a cop in the shortest time possible. Available equipment varies across each scenario.

Racer specific events include:

  • Duel: This event type refers to two cars - select one, and the AI selects the other. Defeat the AI in the race to earn the gold medal. No equipment is available.
  • Gauntlet: The player must race a vehicle from beginning to end, while being pursued by multiple cops. Equipment is enabled in this mode to help fight off the cops.
  • Race: A race against multiple AI racers from start to finish. Cross the finish line first to win.
  • Time Attack:

Cop specific events include:

  • Rapid Response: A one-player drive from start to finish, similar to Preview. Collisions will gain you 2 second time penalties, while collisions with traffic earn 3 second time penalties.
  • Interceptor: The player must bust a single racer in the shortest amount of time as possible.
