Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen/Cerulean Cave

The strongest Pokemon in the game now await you within Cerulean Cave. Prepare lots of healing items, a lot of Ultra Balls and heal up your Pokemon before you tackle this difficult challenge!

Cerulean Cave Entrance.

Cerulean Cave is the final proving spot for the most advanced of trainers. Located north of Cerulean City, you must surf to reach the entrance.

You cannot obtain access to the cave until you beat the Elite Four, and deliver Celio the Ruby and Sapphire gems to allow for free trade. Within you will find the strongest wild Pokemon in the game, including the greatest of them all: Mewtwo!!!

Feel free to battle the powerful Pokemon here and pick up the items, but if you want to reach Mewtwo as soon as possible, you must reach the stairs at the middle of the map to access the right route.

You will find yourself in a maze, but if you entered this area from the ladder previously indicated, you should have a direct (but difficult) path to the ladder located in the northwest corner of the area. Go up this ladder to head directly for Mewtwo.

If you have been following the previous instructions you should have exited back to the 1st Floor, with one ladder directly north from you, and accessing it should have led you here. Head west and then walk through the ledges towards the small lake. Surf your way directly to your final destination!

Mewtwo is a level 70 Psychic Pokémon and considered to be the strongest Pokémon in FireRed/LeafGreen. You can expect Mewtwo to know the moves Psychic, Swift, Recover, and Safeguard.

Tips

• As always, before tackling a Legendary Pokemon, SAVE YOUR GAME
• Try to paralyze Mewtwo with Electric or Grass moves (such as Thunder Wave or Stun Spore) before Mewtwo uses Safeguard, then weaken Mewtwo down to red health.
• Mewtwo will use Recover when it is weakened (it makes for quite a hassle as the move has 20 PP).
• When you finally manage to get Mewtwo's health down to red, throw Ultra Balls. Bringing a minimum of 50 is recommended.
• After a lot of turns have past, start using Timer Balls.
• Expect this battle to take a long time, so be patient and eventually Mewtwo will surrender to you.

Exit with an Escape Rope if you don't want to make the trek back. You have obtained the greatest Pokemon of all!

New Pokemon

#150 Mewtwo

The Genetic Pokemon, Mewtwo, is arguably considered the strongest of all Legendary Pokemon in this generation. Getting a hold of this beast will take enormous patience... or a Master Ball.

Its stats are extremely high in all areas, with large spikes in Sp. Atk and speed, quite proper for a pure Psychic Pokemon. Being level 70, it has already attained the best moves of its learnset, which you will surely feel during your battle with it.

Very little more can be said at this point about Mewtwo. Mewtwo will make an excellent addition in any team, and with it at your side, the Elite Four challenge will not be difficult at all.

Capturing a Legendary Beast

After delivering the Ruby and Sapphire to Celio, one of the Legendary Beasts will be available for capture, running in the wild grass somewhere in Kanto. They will not appear in your map until you have met them once. After that, be sure to consult your Map to determine whether your Beast is present near you.

Which of the Beasts you'll be able to capture is determined by your starter Pokemon. If you chose Bulbasaur, Entei will roam Kanto. If you chose Charmander, Suicune will be available. If you chose Squirtle, Raikou is your challenge.

Tips

• To find the Beast quickly, head to an area in Kanto with easy access to a PokeMart, such as Vermillion City. Buy a good number of Repels and place a speedy Pokemon Level 40-49 in the first position. Head into a zone with tall grass and activate a Repel. Walk around the tall grass and try to start a battle. If no battle starts within 10 seconds of pacing, exit and re-enter the zone. This will reset the Beast's position on the map. An optimal place to do this is just North of Viridian City on Route 2. Once you have paced around without fruition,enter the building immediately to the North, and then immediately exit the way you came to trigger the Beast's location reset. This way you'll get multiple attempts of having the Beast in your location out of a single Repel. Repeat as necessary until you meet the Beast!
• After you meet the Beast, use your Master Ball immediately!
• If for some reason you do not have a Master Ball (perhaps used up with Mewtwo), then attack with your Pokemon and do some damage. Keep re-encountering the Beast in the manner previously outlined and chip away at its health until red. Use moves such as Thunder Wave or Hypnosis to increase your chances as well. Use lots of Ultra Balls and hope for the best!
• Be warned that Raikou and Entei and are bugged. If you use a move or ability to prevent the Beast from fleeing such as Mean Look or Arena Trap, this will force it to respond with Roar, and after it does, it will run away NEVER to be seen again! Do not use this strategy or say goodbye to your Beast forever!

New Pokemon

#243 Raikou

Raikou, the Thunder Pokemon, can be yours if you chose Squirtle as your starter.

Raikou's stats are above average, excelling in Sp. Atk., Sp. Def. and speed stats, which is great for Electric Pokemon. Since you will catch it at Level 50, it will have access to Spark, a good Electric attack with a great chance at inflicting Paralysis. It will eventually learn Thunder and Crunch. It can also learn a great deal of TM's.

Raikou is easily the strongest Electric Pokemon you'll find, and an excellent choice if you decide to change your current one.

#244 Entei

Entei, the Volcano Pokemon, can be yours if you chose Bulbasaur as your starter.

Entei's stats are above average, excelling in HP, attack and speed stats. Being found at Level 50, it won't carry good moves, but that will soon change, as it learns Flamethrower at Level 51. It will eventually learn Fire Blast as well It can also learn a great deal of TM's.

Strangely for a Legendary Pokemon, it doesn't quite outshine other Fire choices, such as Arcanine and Magmar, given that they all have similar Sp. Atk. stats. Its HP and attack, however, make Entei more versatile and durable than the previous ones, so it remains the best Fire choice for your team.

#245 Suicune

Suicune, the Aurora Pokemon, can be yours if you chose Charmander as your starter.

Suicune's stats are all above average, excelling in HP, defense and Sp. Def. stats. Being found at Level 50, it will have access to Aurora Beam, and it will eventually learn Hydro Pump as well, good news for a pure Water Pokemon. It can also learn a great deal of TM's.

Although at first sight, it may appear that Suicune is not a great upgrade from the usual choices, Lapras, Cloyster and Vaporeon, unlike these Suicune remains well rounded in all stats. Suicune beats them all in speed, and possesses similar or greater stats in other areas. Suicune is therefore the best Water Pokemon in the game, and an excellent possible member of your team.

The Final Challenge

Congratulations! You've acquired the Legendary Beast! Now that you have concluded all the quests that Kanto has to offer, head back to Seven Island or Cerulean Cave and train your Pokemon for your final challenge. The Elite Four are back and ready for a rematch with you!
