There are quite a few Trainers on Route 44, and they're using a variety of Pokémon, including Water-, Flying-, Rock- and Fire-types. You should do very well against all comers if you bring along an Electric-type and a Water-type.

Talk to the Fisherman

This area, east of Mahogany, is home to the gun-shaped yet oddly adorable Remoraids in Gold and Silver. And unless you want to spend all day fishing on the off chance that you'll catch one of these bizarre, rare little fish, you'll want to wait for a swarm. Talk to Wilton (in the upper right corner of the right pond) and he'll keep you well-informed about the Remoraid activity.

There is no Remoraid in Pokémon Crystal, so there's no point asking Wilton to keep you posted on swarm activity. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't trade phone numbers anyway. Wilton will call you in the future when he fishes up Poké Balls and other items.

Rare Grass Pokémon Aplenty

The thin strip of grass in this area is easy to miss. That's a shame, since it has a super-rare Max Revive, and is the only place you'll ever find a Lickitung. (Tangelas are less rare, but you might as well grab one early.)

#108 Lickitung	#114 Tangela
Lickitung now starts with the Lick technique, which is the sort of thing you'd expect it had all along, yet strangely did not. Other than that, nothing much has changed since the days of Red/Blue/Yellow. There are stronger Normal-Type Pokémon around.	Tangela's only new technique of note is Mega Drain, but it did benefit from its Special stat being split; its Special Attack score is now even higher. So Tangela can be a solid Grass fighter if you burn some TM's to give it some good moves.
#223 Remoraid
Remoraid Remoraid is an unusually versatile Pokémon. At level 22 it suddenly learns Psybeam, Aurora Beam, and Bubble Beam. If you evolve it into tank-ish Octillery at level 25 it learns Octazooka and gets better stats, but loses its Speed.
