Route 119 in Emerald.
Route 119 in Ruby and Sapphire

Route 119 is one of the largest land routes in the entire game, and is packed full of things to do and stuff to find as well. From Pokémon that can change their shape based on the weather to a fish that's considered the hardest thing to find in any Pokémon game, you'll likely be frequenting this route quite a bit. More so because of the fish than anything else.

Too Tall for Lawn Mowers

The first thing you'll notice is the abnormally tall grass patches. This super-tall grass completely prevents you from traversing on bicycle, so you're going to need to hoof it across the route. Rather ironically, there's also parts of the route that is accessible only by bicycle, but we'll get to those later.

While on the route, it'll be raining for 3 days, with a single clear day in-between each rain cycle. If you start a battle while it is raining, it'll be raining in your battle too (and thus any and all Water type moves will gain a boost to power).

The Mimic Circle

There are 6 trainers in the initial clumps of grass alone, but getting to them isn't as easy as they seem. The trainers will turn and take steps whenever the player does, so each one requires a certain pattern to get to. Oh, and they all have an unhealthy obsession with bugs.

Once you get past the super-tall grass, you'll find a rest house to shelter yourself from the rain.

Tight-roping, for bikes!

Shortly after the rest house and behind some super-tall grass will be a white bridge across the river. This bridge is only traverse-able by bunny-hopping on the Acro bike, so make sure you have one whenever you wanna go over there. The only thing on the other side of the bike bridge is an Item, however, so it is by no means mandatory to do so.

Trainers

The list of trainers here does not include those found in the large patch of super-tall grass, those found in the Weather Institute, or any Unique battles.

The Weather Institute

The weather institute is, as the name suggests, a meteorological research station, and keeps track of the weather across the entire Region. It also is home to many projects, including a machine that can change the weather at will and an entirely artificial Pokémon.

However, upon the player's first visit, it is discovered that the research team has been taken hostage by the evil teams! As usual, it's time to clear them out.

The Admins

After fighting your way through the Grunts, you'll be confronted by one of the Team's Admins, who is spearheading this operation. Defeat them to free the meteorologists.

Upon defeating the Admin, the researchers will thank you and give you a free Pokemon 351Castform.pngCastform, but it can only be accepted if you have a spare slot in your team. If you don't, then they'll hold on to it for you, so just go to the nearest Pokémon Center to store one of your Pokémon and come back. Time to continue traversing the route!

The Northern Half of the Route

The northern part of the route is noticeably more barren than the southern half, and the entire Northwest section is inaccessible until you obtain the ability to use HM07 Waterfall outside of battle. Even so, there's still a couple of activities to do on the Northeast side, so head over the wooden bridge.

Oh hey, your rival!

Upon crossing the bridge and heading North, you'll instantly be thrown into a conversation and subsequent battle against your Rival that you cannot refuse, so make sure to fully heal your Pokémon before initiating the event. As usual, your Rival has gotten stronger, and there's even an extra goodie at the end!

In addition to the monetary rewards, your Rival will also give you one of the most useful HMs in the game: HM02 Fly. In battle, Fly is a two-turn move that deals high damage. Outside of battle, Fly can be used to instantly travel to any Pokémon Center you've previously visited. This will cut out a lot of otherwise mandatory travel time, so it's recommended that you teach this to a Pokémon ASAP.

Hidden Kecleon

There are two hidden Pokemon 352Kecleon.pngKecleon in the northern part of the route, that can only be interacted with if the player has the Devon Scope , found on Route 120.

  • Next to the bike rails (Ruby & Sapphire only)
  • In the dead-end path near the entrance to Fortree City (Emerald only)
  • Just right of the last Ninja Boy before Fortree City, in the indent of trees

The Fish

And finally, it's time to talk about Pokemon 349Feebas.pngFeebas. "What's special about Feebas", you say? Well, there's two things special about Feebas:

Firstly, it evolves into Pokemon 350Milotic.pngMilotic by levelling up with it's Beauty stat maxed out (this can be achieved by feeding it Pamtre Berries, which increase the Beauty stat, and are obtained after beating the Elite Four).

And secondly, it is notoriously difficult to actually find. The only way to encounter Feebas in the wild is to fish on any one of 6 unique water tiles in the river on this route, that randomise every time the trend in Dewford Town is changed. There's no easy shortcut to know which tile has Feebas in it either - your best bet is gonna be process of elimination. To add onto the annoyance, Feebas shares the encounter pool with other Pokémon as well, so your chances of finding them are even lower. Thankfully, all 3 rods are capable of finding Feebas, and the Pokémon can be found on those 6 tiles as many times as lady luck gives you, so you can take your time.
