Welcome to the big city! Castelia City has a lot of things to do, and is the location for your third gym battle. But first, let's get some items.

This city is not actually as big as you might think, with just a few roads; the road along the piers is Oceanfront Road, and the vertical streets are (from left to right), Gym Street, Narrow Street, Mode Street and Castelia Street, leading on the ocean side to Liberty Pier, Prime Pier, Unity Pier and Cruise Dock, and at the far east end near the gate is Thumb Pier.

The Items[edit]

At Thumb Pier, a scientist will give you an evolutionary stone, either a Leaf Stone, Fire Stone or Water Stone and will tell you that your elemental monkey can evolve using one of these stones. It's recommended you don't choose the Fire Stone, as you can get one later on in the Desert Resort.

The Pokémon Massage Service is on Castelia Street, across from Game Freak, which is available once a day and will make your Pokémon happier.

A man in the Pokémon Centre will give you an item depending on how many people you've traded with; if this is more than 50, you can obtain a rare Master Ball.

On Mode Street there are two main attractions; the ice cream stand and the Battle Company. The ice cream stand can sell you Casteliacones for just Pokebuck.png 100, BUT only on Tuesdays and not during the winter. The Battle Company is a good spot for some training:

After defeating Geoff, he will give you a valuable item: the Exp. Share! You can give this to a Pokémon to hold and they will gain experience, even if they don't participate in the battle.

Team Plasma[edit]

When you go to the Gym, Cheren is just leaving, having defeated the Gym Leader, Burgh. When Burgh also leaves the building, you follow him to Prime Pier. You meet with Bianca, Burgh and Iris (a gym leader for a city later on). Bianca reveals that her Munna was stolen by Team Plasma. A Team Plasma Grunt suddenly appears and Burgh chases after her, so you can follow him to Gym Street.

  • Team Plasma Grunt
    • Sandile (Lv. 17)
    • Sandile (Lv. 17)

When you enter the building opposite from the Gym, Ghetsis is standing there, with... two of the six other commanders of Team Plasma, known including Ghetsis as the Seven Sages. Ghetsis reveals a bit more about his own plans for liberation, and eventually returns Bianca's Munna. As the Plasma group run out, they leave behind a Smoke Ball (an item which lets you escape from wild Pokemon), and Iris will give you a Yache Berry. Now, it's gym time!

Castelia Gym[edit]

The Gym of Castelia City is the third of eight, and specialises in Bug-type Pokemon with Burgh as its leader. While Fire-, Flying-, and Rock-type Pokemon seem like your best bet, secondary typings make this more confusing.

The Gym is designed as a beehive, with walls made of honey to go through. You need to press the switches to open the gates, however some of the switches instead reveal trainers. Once you have opened all the gates, you can battle Burgh.

  • Harlequin Jack
    • Sewaddle (Lv. 20)
    • Venipede (Lv. 20)
    • Pokebuck.png 640
  • Harlequin Kerry
    • Sewaddle (Lv. 20)
    • Dwebble (Lv. 20)
    • Pokebuck.png 640
  • Harlequin Rick
    • Sewaddle (Lv. 21)
    • Pokebuck.png 672
  • Harlequin Louis
    • Venipede (Lv. 20)
    • Sewaddle (Lv. 20)
    • Pokebuck.png 640
  • Leader Burgh
    • Whirlipede (Lv. 21, Bug/Poison) Poison Tail, Screech, Pursuit, Struggle Bug
    • Dwebble (Lv. 21, Bug/Rock) Smack Down, Struggle Bug, Sand-Attack, Faint Attack
    • Leavanny (Lv. 23, Bug/Grass) Cut, Struggle Bug, Razor Leaf, Protect
    • Pokebuck.png 2,760

Burgh can be a tricky fight for unprepared teams, utilising a mixture of two-typed Pokemon and various moves to deal damage. He leads with his Whirlipede, a part-Poison type that can lower your defense using Screech and poison you using Poison Tail, so make sure you have Antidotes! This is followed by his Dwebble, which can be quite an issue as it only takes normal damage from Fire-, Flying-, Fighting-, and Grass-type Pokemon, so you can use a Water-type move on it. Also watch for the accuracy-lowering Sand-Attack. His third and final Pokemon is Leavanny, which is four times weak to Fire- and Flying-type attacks, so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

After defeating Burgh, he gives you the Insect Badge and TM76 (Struggle Bug), a move which has a chance of lowering your opponent's Special Attack.

Rival Battle: Bianca[edit]

After beating the Gym, Bianca calls you up, saying she wants to have another battle. Heal up if needed, then move north to the Route 4 Gate!

  • PKMN Trainer Bianca
      • Herdier (Lv. 18, Normal) Bite, Take Down, Helping Hand, Odor Sleuth
    • If you chose Snivy:
      • Pansear (Lv. 18, Fire) Lick, Incinerate, Fury Swipes, Yawn
      • Dewott (Lv. 20, Water) Water Sport, Focus Energy, Razor Shell, Fury Cutter
    • If you chose Tepig:
      • Panpour (Lv. 18, Water) Lick, Water Gun, Water Sport, Fury Swipes
      • Servine (Lv. 20, Grass) Leech Seed, Wrap, Leaf Tornado, Growth
    • If you chose Oshawott:
      • Pansage (Lv. 18, Grass) Lick, Vine Whip, Leech Seed, Fury Swipes
      • Pignite (Lv. 20, Fire/Fighting) Defense Curl, Flame Charge, Arm Thrust, Smog (
    • Regardless of starter:
      • Munna (Lv. 18, Psychic) Yawn, Psybeam, Imprison, Moonlight
    • Pokebuck.png 2,000

This should be a fairly simple battle as her Pokemon are quite weak compared to yours. Heal up if needed, and now you can go north to Route 4!
