Raiden's controls are typical of most vertical shooters of its era. The game has two sets of controls, to allow for two-player gameplay.

Movement

The joystick moves the player's Raiden fighter plane in any of eight directions. Releasing the stick causes the plane to stop.

The player's plane always faces toward the top of the screen.

Firing

The player is equipped with two buttons with which to attack.

Fire Button

Fires a single shot. This button fires both the player's primary weapon (spread vulcan or laser), as well as missiles, if equipped. The button must be pressed repeatedly for rapid fire. Many home versions of Raiden optionally allow holding the fire button for rapid fire.

Bomb Button

Drops a single bomb, if available.
