RoboCop is an action game developed by SAS Sakata for the Famicom and NES, and published in 1989 by Data East in Japan and North America. It was licensed by Ocean and published in Europe in 1991. It was inspired by the arcade version, itself inspired by the titular 1988 movie, but it is not a recreation of the arcade game.

Gameplay[edit]

One of the biggest differences between the arcade version and the NES version is that RoboCop cannot jump. The A and B buttons are used for punching and shooting. The game designates some parts of the game as areas where you may not draw your weapon, restricting you to punching. The player has both a health meter and a time meter, and the game will end if either depletes. The game offers unlimited continues.

Since it is not a port of the arcade game, the levels are completely different, although they have similar compositions. The NES version has some more maze like scenes where you must navigate the interior of a building, selecting the right doors to investigate in order to make progress. As in the arcade version, there is an enemy who takes someone hostage. However, unlike the arcade game, you can only defeat the hostage taker if you avoid shooting the hostage.

RoboCop can both shoot in diagonal directions, as well as shoot from a squatting position. However, players must take special care to ensure that RoboCop is squatting before shooting, or they are more likely to shoot downward diagonally by mistake.
