Rogue Legacy (RL) is an indie, 2D platform, single player roguelike released on June 27, 2013 for Windows. RL features procedurally generated rooms and a layout similar to Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Title screen.

Unlike other roguelikes, Rogue Legacy allows players to build off of their previous character. Players take control of a knight. Upon dying, that character is lost and a new "heir" must be chosen. The game then gives a few different characters to choose from. Each character has randomized traits to give the feel of a genetically different child. Traits change a player's size, environment, stats, and ability (e.g. magic or a ranged weapon). In addition, any money acquired will be available for the heir to spend on the "manor" (a tree of upgrades), which is used to give permanent upgrades to future heirs.

Story

An assassin kills the king, and the prince goes into the castle to find and kill the culprit. As a knight, you wander into the castle for gold and glory, but find yourself in more and more danger the further you go in. You find the journals of the prince, who supplies insight, humor, and fear for what exists in the castle. The goal is to defeat all of the bosses and be free of the castle.
