Satan's Hollow is a fixed shooter arcade game, that was developed by Arcade Engineering for Bally Midway in 1981; it was the first game to run on that company's then-new MCR-2 hardware (two Zilog Z80s running at 2.496 MHz with a third Zilog Z80 and two General Instrument AY-3-8910s running at 2 MHz). The player must use a 2-way joystick to take control of a cannon at the bottom of the screen, with two buttons, to make it fire shots up at the various enemy characters and activate a shield which offers very temporary protection from death - and the Gargoyles are worth 120 points while Bombers and Egg Droppers are worth a very unusual 225, Beelzebub is worth 250, Old Nick is worth 500, and Lucifer (along with Satan himself) is worth 1000. For every enemy you may kill off, a section of bridge will appear, in that bottom-left corner of the screen (unless there is already one there, or your cannon has one in tow); you have to move your cannon over to them, and carry them over to the right side of the screen, in order to build a Bridge of Fire leading over to that eponymous hollow of Satan. You will receive a "bonus flag" every time you clear a stage - they're worth 1000 points each, but you will only receive their bonus when you finish building that Bridge of Fire over to Satan's hollow and defeat him (and his tridents will invalidate your shield on impact). Once you have defeated him, your cannon will gain an additional barrel (up to a maximum of three); the game shall then start over again at a higher level of difficulty with bigger point values. The game fell under fire from religious groups for its theme.
