Space Zap is a multi-directional shooter arcade game that was released by Midway Games in 1980; it runs on the company's Astrocade hardware, and was possibly the most basic game they had ever released. The player must use a 4-way joystick to aim the cannon of a space station in the centre of the screen, with a single button to make it fire lasers at "Space Mines" (which are worth 250 points), "Alien Ships" (which look somewhat like Namco's Galaxian flagship, and are worth 500 points), and "Attack Satellites" (which are worth 2000 points) - and, it will receive an extra life after every 75,000 points. However if a Space Mine or Attack Satellite flies into your space station (the Alien Ships will always stay at the edges of the screen) it will spectacularly explode (which will cost it a life); once it has run out of lives, the game will be over. If your score is one of the three highest values upon the cabinet to date, it will be displayed in the top-right corner of the screen - but the feature of allowing the highest-scoring players to enter their initials had not yet been implemented by Midway Games.
