The creature stage is the next major stage of your Spore journey and involves you evolving your creature and surviving. It is similar to the cell stage but completely in 3D and lets you interact with other creatures beyond attacking.

Initial Creature Creator

The Initial Creature Creator.
For more details on the Initial Creature Creator, see Spore/Initial Creature Creator.

Before you start controlling your creature. You'll encounter the initial creature editor. It contains parts from the cell editor as well as three legs so that your creature can walk. The main purpose is to allow you to design your creature to adapt to life on land.

Other Creatures

On your journey you'll encounter other creatures. The options of what to do with them are simple. Eat them to get food and socialize to form alliances. A normal creature will either be friendly or aggressive. If an aggressive creature approaches the nest, be carful as you might have to prepare for a fight. There are also two special types of creatures.

Rogue Creatures

Rogue creatures are powerful versions of creatures found later on in the creature stage. These creatures typically have about 250 health and may have slightly boosted statistics as well as being slightly larger. They are also, by virtue of their large amount of health, quite difficult to kill and are usually far easier to ally with, not to mention giving you a super strong pack. If you manage to fill your pack with rogue creatures it will make killing an epic, if you wish to do it, so much easier

Epic Creatures

Epic creatures are massive reincarnations of other creatures. Like rogue creatures they have boosted health and statistics, but this time it's to a far greater degree. They'll often be guarding some bone piles with valuable body parts. If you want the body parts, you can do two things.

  • Use your sneak ability to grab the pile and then use your sprint ability to get out of there.
  • Attack the creature. The best way to do it is to begin with spitting and then charge in. Make sure you have a pack with you, preferably with a rouge creature and use your high level attacks. If you're lucky, you'll kill the beast but also be prepared to run.

Packs

You can create a pack depending on your creature’s brain size. Packs consist of:

  • Other species
  • Your species
  • Rogue creatures

Packs can come in handy, especially if you want to battle an epic creature.

Interacting with Other Creatures

There are two main ways to deal with other creatures; socialize with them or fight with them.

Socializing

Creatures can now socialize with other creatures to reap a variety of rewards such as forming packs. There are four social abilities in the game.

  • Sing
  • Dance
  • Charm
  • Pose

Each ability has a five-score rating. You'll know what rating your creature has simply by checking the bars at the top-right corner of the creature creator screen. While you can use whatever interactions you want to try and impress the creature. There are ways to make it go quicker. When approaching, try to sing first and then watch the creature and it will attempt one of the four interactions. Match the plan and raise your social meter. Repeat this way until both meters meet in the middle. The skills you'll need depend on the creature. When meeting a creature, check it out in the Sporepedia first. The skills it has are the skills you'll most likely need. If you have a high rating for the skill being used, you'll fill your social meter quicker. Failing socializing, if you're not a herbivore, you can always resort to combat.

Combat

Carnivores and herbivores need food. While herbivores can rely on fruit to satisfy their need, carnivores must eat other creatures. The only problem is they're usually alive and so they need to be beaten in order to be eaten. Combat, like socialization relies on four abilities.

  • Bite. Biting is the easiest way as it doesn't take time to recharge but it deals less damage than the other forms of attack.
  • Charge. Ram yourself into your enemy to wound them but don't start this ability from too far away as you might miss the creature.
  • Spit. A long-range attack that lets you project poison at your enemies without getting too close to them. If you have a pack, they can deal with the creature at close-quarters while you back them up with your spit attack.
  • Strike. The most powerful attack lets you slash your enemy and wound nearby creatures. Note that it takes a long time to recharge though.

Combat is simple, really. Attack the creature until they run out of health points. Find more body parts and upgrade your abilities and then attack more powerful creatures. In fact, you could even defeat an epic creature if you made the right decision.

Abilities

Jump

Jumping lifts you high into the air. Upgrade your jump ability to reach further heights.

Glide

Fly high above the ground and possible enemies for an amount of time. Upgrading this ability lets you fly further distances without touching the ground.

Sprint

Take a speed boost for a short amount of time. As always, getting a higher rating lets you sprint a faster distance but also reduces the recharge time.

Sneak

Turn half-transparent and maneuver through enemy territory without being spotted. Higher ratings for this ability amount to higher sneaking distances.

Other Abilities

  • Mating Call. You'll always have this ability as you always need a mouth. This ability allows you to get to your nest so you can mate.
  • Sight. Most likely you had this ability in the cell stage. Well nothing changes here.
  • Graspers. You'll need these in the next stage. How else are you going to use the tools supplied by the tents.
  • Speed. Speed is an important ability as it controls your sprint ability and how fast your creature runs. Find body parts that boost your speed rating to run faster.
  • Health. Possibly the most important element of your creature. Health isn't an ability but more of an attribute. You can increase your creature’s health by adding body parts but also by getting further through the game. You'll need a healthy creature as well if you even want to attempt to battle an epic creature.

Food

Your creatures need food to survive. If a thought bubble pops up about eating, find food immediately. Keep track of your hunger bar as well as a low hunger bar decreases your health bar until you go down to 0. You'll respawn at the nest but you'll still need to eat. Finding food is easy but the type you need depends on what your creature is. Also note that if you eat the wrong type of food, your creature won’t like you for it.

Carnivore

If you're a carnivore, you're going to have to eat meat at some point. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to do the dirty work yourself though, as your creature could be as much a charming scavenger as it could be a vicious herbivore. Evolving hands means your creature can rip chunks of meat out of corpses and carry it until it either finishes the meat or needs its hands for another task.

Herbivore

Very simply, herbivores eat fruit and only fruit. Actually, if they eat meat, they'll be very sick. Fruit can be found on the ground, in bushes and on trees.

Omnivore

Omnivores can eat any food from any of the places detailed above.

Creature Creator

A finished product.
For more details on the Creature Creator, see Spore/Creature Creator.

There are 228 parts to collect in the creature stage and you'll want these parts in order to create better creatures. You can use the creature creator to create an infinite number of beasts and creatures. There are two main ways to find body parts.

  1. Fossil piles. Long dead creatures had bodies parts. You can now use those body parts to boost your creatures abilities. Simply dig though those piles to find the golden shield.
  2. Other creatures. Win at the social game or defeat a creature in combat. Note that not just any creature can be defeated or befriended though. You'll need to interact with an 'alpha' creature.

There are two things to note about your creature as you're unlocking it.

  1. What you unlock depends on what you placed on your creature in the initial creature creator. Each part has parts which it will always unlock. For example, if you added a herbivore mouth and find a shield with the mouth icon on it, it will always unlock the three herbivore mouths on the left-hand column of the creature creator.
  2. Each part has a three progressively 'better' versions of it. Knowing which parts are 'better' is simple. Go into the creature creator. Find the specific part you used and then look to the right of that part. The part next to it will be the better version. That put, all parts resting on the right hand side are the most desirable parts for your creature.

One last thing, you'll need DNA points if you want to advance your creature. There are plenty of ways to earn them.

  • Bone Piles
  • Defeat/Befriend a creature
  • Defeat/Befriend a species
  • Defeat/Befriend a rogue creature
  • Migrate to a new nest
  • Finish a mission

Abilities

You can have one of three abilities in this stage depending on how you played the cell stage.

  • Herbivore: Siren's Song: You can use this ability to prevent other creatures from attacking you.
  • Carnivore: Raging Roar: nearby creatures automatically become afraid of you.
  • Omnivore: Summon Flock: Summon a group of creatures to help you attack or befriend a number of creatures.

Ways to Play

  • Social: Gain most of your DNA points by socializing.
  • Predator: Gain most of your DNA points by defeating creatures.
  • Adaptable: A balanced play style.

Other things

  • Vents: Step into these vents and shoot high into the air.
  • Meteor shower: Get to the nest when these occur
  • UFOs: Space Stage creatures may come and abduct other creatures terrifying the local populace.
  • Objects: The landscape is dotted with some strange objects, some have bones near them.
  • Weather: Short rainstorms may occur.
  • Day/Night cycle: Nights are generally shorter than days and the effects are purely visual.
