Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic/Shyrack Caves

Map of the shyrack caves

Valley[edit]

The entrance from the Valley of Dark Lords is on the west side of the caves: if you want to return to Ebon Hawk or change party selection, then you need to exit to do so. The passage to the east forks to the north and south, where you'll have your first shyrack encounter to the southeast, the composition of which depends on your character level:

They all look alike, but while Shyrack and Raptors actually inflict slightly more damage than Wyrms, they have significantly less vitality.

Beyond these caves to the east is a passage linking the north and south passages which contains a tuk'ata encounter, the composition of which depends on your character level:

The high natural Force Resistance of tuk'ata means that even a level 20 Jedi's Force powers will only breach it 45% of the time, so Force users are advised to use (Advanced) Throw Lightsaber against them.

Thalia May and two Twi'lek Sith rebels stand by a campfire on the south side, and you're challenged as you approach:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: Hold it right there, whoever you are! We... we're not going back to the academy! We'll kill you rather than go back!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Go back? What are you talking about? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I'm not here to bring you back.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: You mean you aren't here to kill us or bring us back? I find that hard to believe. The only way into these caves is through the academy. You must be a Sith.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: So what is it, then? If you're not here to kill us or bring us back, why are you here? Speak up!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Slow down and tell me what you're doing here. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. You're... the renegade students? The ones who ran away?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: So you don't know about us? I don't know if I'm ready to believe that or not, but I'll play along for the moment. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: So you have heard about us. Yes, we ran away before Master Uthar could execute us. Is that so hard to believe?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: My name is Thalia May. The others here and myself refused to murder a bunch of people on a whim from Master Uthar... so here we are. We thought that becoming a Sith was what we always wanted, but that wasn't true. Now all we want is to get out of here. Fair enough?

It's easy to persuade her that you can help her, and a light side character (alignment > 60) always does so:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Maybe I can help you.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: Help us? Why should I believe that this isn't some kind of trick?
Light 1. [Persuade] Give me a chance and I'll prove it to you. Easy 1. [Persuade] Give me a chance and I'll prove it to you.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: [Success] You want to help us? Alright... I can think of a way. We're stuck in these caves, obviously, or we would have been long gone. There's a passage to the surface through the caves, but we're blocked by some kind of large creature. We can't defeat it. If you could kill it and clear up the passageway for us, we could escape. That would be help enough. Can you do that?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I can try.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: I'll believe that when I see it... but if you could, we would be... grateful.
Journal Entry Added Renegade Sith
You have encountered a group of renegade Sith students trapped within the shyrack caverns. They are trying to get to the surface of the planet, but their route is currently blocked by some type of creature. Getting rid of the creature would enable them to escape, but killing them would earn you prestige.

However, in the unlikely event you fail, or you say you'll leave them be or won't help, they attack:

Dialog
Easy 1. [Persuade] Give me a chance and I'll prove it to you.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: [Failure] No! I know what Sith like you want from us! You're not bringing our heads to Master Uthar so he can pat you on the back! They're here to kill us! Get them!! Get them!!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Alright, I'll leave you be. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Fair enough. I'll leave you be. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Forget it. Get yourselves out.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: Then get out of here! Now! Or we'll open fire!! KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: I figured as much. Get out of here, then. Go on! We have enough to worry about with the shyrack!

They do likewise if you indicate you're going to kill them, which moves you closer to the dark side of the Force:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I guess we'll do this the hard way, then. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Okay, you got me. I'm here to kill you after all. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: So... is there news? Is the passageway clear?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Sorry. Time for you to die. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Fine. You've worn out my patience. Time to die. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. No. But thanks for letting your guard down.

Thalia May: Open fire! Get them! Get them!!

Thalia May: You... you tricked us! You just wanted to get closer!! Quick, get them!!

More experience is received for killing rather than helping them at level < 18, but at the expense of an opportunity to move (much) closer to the light side of the Force. They receive bonuses depending on your character level:

Journal Entry Added Renegade Sith
You have successfully killed a small group of renegade Sith students that were holed up in shyrack caverns outside of the academy. Reporting this deed to Master Uthar would certainly earn his favor.
Experience Points (XP) Received:
  • Challenge Rating 10 Killed Thalia May
  • Challenge Rating 4 Killed Sith Rebel (2)
  • 750 Killed renegade Sith students
Item(s) Received Thalia May

The advanced medpac is only received if it wasn't used. Otherwise, if you agree to help them and speak to either of the Sith rebels:

You should really talk to Thalia. We'll... go wherever she does.

You need to continue to the east to get rid of the Creature before telling Thalia May that the passage is clear:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: So... is there news? Is the passageway clear?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Not yet, but I'm working on it.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: Alright. We'll keep waiting, then. Watch out for that beast... it's dangerous.

Otherwise:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. The passage is already clear. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. It's clear. You're free to go.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Thalia May: It... it's clear? We can go? Thank you. This... I wasn't expecting help from anyone in the academy. I guess we aren't the only ones who don't... agree with everything. Maybe... maybe the Jedi will accept us. I've seen how evil the dark side is. Maybe I could try.
Light Side Points Gained: +6
Thalia May: At any rate, thank you again. You've saved our lives.
Journal Entry Added Renegade Sith
With the creature in the shyrack caverns killed, the renegade Sith students were able to escape to the surface and escape from Korriban.
Experience Points (XP) Received:
  • 1000 Enabled renegade Sith students to escape

Either way, you can return to the academy and report to Master Uthar to gain prestige:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 6. I dealt with those renegade students.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Uthar Wynn: Ahhh. The ones I ordered executed for their mutiny? It's done, then?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Yes. They are all dead. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. [Lie] Yes, they are all dead. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. [Lie] It's done. They are... gone.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Uthar Wynn: Indeed. I had the caverns checked after you left. Well done. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Uthar Wynn: [Success] Indeed? We checked the caves and found only a couple of bodies. Perhaps the shyrack ate them? Ah, it is just as good, I suppose.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Uthar Wynn: The lesson is learned, I believe.
Journal Entry Added Renegade Sith
Having killed the renegade Sith students who were hiding out in the shyrack caverns, you have informed Master Uthar of the deed. He was suitably impressed, bringing you closer to the final test for apprenticeship.
Journal Entry Added Renegade Sith
Even though you had freed the renegade Sith students from the shyrack caverns, you were also able to lie to Master Uthar and inform him that his problem was taken care of. Technically it's true… they *are* gone. Either way, you’ve earned prestige amongst the Sith for the deed.
Experience Points (XP) Received:
  • 110 Dealt with renegade students

Creature[edit]

Awareness Average Plasma Mine Detect 30 (10) Demolitions Disable 25 (5) Recover 35 (15)

It leads to the southern end of the path alongside the chasm to the east. To the north is a shyrack encounter and a narrow bridge crossing the chasm to the east. On the opposite side, the way is blocked by the creature: a terentatek! It receives bonuses depending on your character level:

Any level > 8 Jedi in your party should use Improved Energy Resistance or Knight or Master Valor to make your party immune to its poisoned claws. It in turn is immune to Force Push and Whirlwind and cannot be knocked back and down, but Force Wave can still damage and stun it (although its high natural Force Resistance and saves make this unlikely at lower levels, a level 20 Jedi whose Force powers have DC > 35 should breach its defenses 75% of the time). Conversely, its own Slam Attack can be a nuisance for melee attackers, knocking them back and down even when they save against it.

One or two melee attackers should block the bridge to protect any ranged attackers or Force users using Throw Lightsaber (or persevering with other powers). Alternatively, it can be led away from the bridge to be attacked and obstructed by shyrack and tuk'ata, or Mines can be set (although normally it saves 100% of the time against Minor mines, 75% of the time against Average mines and 50% of the time against most Deadly mines).

When the terentatek is killed, a Shyrack Wyrm appears from the cave opposite the bridge to the east, while others appear at the north and south end of the rock shelf on the east side of the bridge.

Duron's Journal
This data pad appears to be the personal journal of the Jedi Duron Qel-Droma. The last entry reveals what he was doing on this world:
Korriban is everything I imagined - and feared. I can feel the power of the dark side here, I can sense the terentatek hiding in this evil place.
Shaela and I have decided to venture forth into the Valley of the Sith Lords in search of the creatures. I only wish Guun Han was still with us.
Why couldn't he just accept that Shaela and I are in love? He claims our passion for each other will lead us down the dark side, but he can't even see how his own pride and arrogance are leading him away from the light.
Maybe it is good that he left, after all. Even as dangerous as the terentatek are, I'm certain Shaela and I can defeat one without his help.
