Lower City

Infected Outcasts - No Commentary Light (27:19)

The Lower City elevator takes you down to the west end of the Outcast village, a safe haven in the Undercity populated by numerous Outcast men and women. Upon arrival, you're challenged by two beggars demanding payment:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: You there! Up-worlder! Anyone using this elevator has to pay the toll!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Yeah, this is our elevator! If you use it, you've got to give us something!
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: I don't believe this planet! Even the beggars are trying to shake us down.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Five credits! That's what it costs to use our elevator! Five credits!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Who are you? What are you doing here in the Undercity?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: We are the Outcasts, banished and reviled by those who dwell above!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Here in the filth and darkness we claw out a wretched existence, scavenging and begging just to survive long enough to see another wretched day.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: This is our village. We live here in the undercity. You have to pay us five credits for using our elevator.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I don't have any credits on me. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. This is a public elevator! I'm not paying any toll!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: We are not fools... we know all who come from the up-world are rich! Please, is 5 credits so much to ask?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Please, have pity on us. We have nothing. All we ask is a few credits to make our lives easier.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 5. Get out of here you filthy beggars, or I'll use my blaster to end your suffering permanently! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Forget it! You get nothing from me!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Have you no heart? Have you no compassion?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Run, my brother! Flee this one's wrath! KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Come, my brother – let us go. We will get nothing from this selfish up-worlder!

If you haven't threatened them or refused to pay then you can give them five credits, or even more to move closer to the light side of the Force:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Okay, here's 5 credits. Light Side Points Gained: +2
1. You poor wretches. Here's 20 credits to buy some food and clothing.
KotOR Icon Credits.png Credits Lost: 5 KotOR Icon Credits.png Credits Lost: 20
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Credits, my brother! We have credits! Now we can buy food and medicine!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Beggar: Hush, or the others will hear us! They'll want our credits! We have to hide them!

A young woman named Shaleena runs in from the right as the Outcast beggars leave:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: Go on, you two! Get out of here! I'm sorry about that... those two beggars give everyone in the village a bad name! We aren't all like that, you know. Most of us are good people.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: I'm sure you are, miss. It's just too bad your little welcoming committee is there to give people a bad first impression.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. My name's Name. Who are you? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. What do you want?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: My name is Shaleena... you're from the up-world, aren't you? I've... I've never seen it. I was born here in the Undercity. Is it as nice as they say up there?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. The surface is a beautiful place. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. It's nothing special. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. It's better than this festering slime pit.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: Not to you, I suppose. But you're probably used to its beauty by now. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: I... I suppose our world doesn't look like much to you. It's dark and cold and lonely down here – but this is the only world I've ever known.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: I've never been to the surface, but sometimes I think I can see it in my dreams. The sun, the sky, the stars... it all sounds so... so... so wonderful. Gendar, the leader of our village, tells me I should spend more time trying to improve things down here and less time dreaming about something I can never have. Maybe he's right. You probably think I'm a fool, having dreams of a place I've never even seen. But when I was little, Rukil used to tell me stories of what it was like up there.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. I don't have time for this.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: Of course... I'm sorry. You're probably here for something important, right? You probably want to speak to Gendar. He's the leader of our village. But if you... if you have time later, maybe you could come back and speak to me again. I don't get much chance to talk with people from the surface.

Otherwise, you can ask her some questions:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Rukil? Who's that?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: Rukil's the oldest man in the village. The kids call him Rukil Wrinkle-Skin, but he's a kind man. He used to tell me the greatest stories when I was a little girl. I still like to listen to his tales about the Promised Land, even though I know they're just legends. But it helps to make the Undercity seem less... less dark, somehow.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. The Promised Land? What's that?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: It's... it's just a story to make little children smile. Rukil believes in it, though. Sometimes I can almost believe it myself, but then I look around and I see the ugly truth. *sigh* I guess we have to make the best of what we have though. If you really want to learn more about the promised land you should speak to Rukil.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I want to ask you some questions.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: You'd probably get more information from Gendar, the village leader. Or maybe Rukil. But I'll tell you whatever I can.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Where can I find Gendar?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: He'll be somewhere in the village. I couldn't say where for sure. He's always busy, doing whatever he can to make the lives of the other villagers easier.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Where can I find Rukil?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: He's wandering around somewhere on the south side of the village. He doesn't move too far... it's hard on his bones. He's over 100 years old! The children laugh at him and people think he's crazy because of his stories about the Promised Land, but he's really just a kind old man.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Do you know anything about the escape pods that crashed into the Undercity?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: I don't know anything about that, but maybe Gendar could help you. Sorry... is there anything else you need?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Have any other up-worlders come through here recently?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: There were quite a few people from the surface marching through the village, but none of them bothered to talk to me. Gendar might know more about them.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 5. Tell me about this village.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: Well, I was born here for starters. My parents were Outcasts, banished to the Undercity for some crime or other... they never really liked to talk about it. Everyone here is an Outcast... or the descendant of one. It's tough down here, but we survive. I guess it's easier for me, since I've never known anything different. Some of the people have given up all hope; they've become bitter and depressed. But most of us are good people... despite what our ancestors may have done. Gendar could probably tell you more. Or maybe Rukil. You could talk to them if you want.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 6. I'll be going now.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: Oh... okay. Well, if you ever need anything, or if you just feel like talking, come back and see me. I hardly ever get a chance to speak to someone from the up-world.

You can speak to her again, although she wanders from place to place around the village:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: Hello, again. I'm glad you came back... it's kind of neat to speak to someone from the surface world. Is there anything I can do for you?

If you're all business then you can proceed directly to the Village Gate at its northeast end to go out into the Undercity. However, there are a few quests you can complete in the Undercity and Lower Sewers, and once you've gone beyond to the Upper Sewers you don't really want to return.

If you speak to any of the Outcast men or women:

Outcast Man
I once lived above, with the rich and privileged. But I was cast down here - a punishment far worse than my crimes deserved!
The rakghoul disease can infect you. It can transform you into one of those monsters! I've seen it happen!
A lifetime lived in this dark place can drive you mad! Just look at poor old Rukil if you don't believe me - he's lost his mind!
You are the one who brought us the rakghoul cure! The entrie village thanks you. I just regret we have nothing to give you as a reward.
Outcast Man
A few of the braver villagers dared to leave the safety of the fence. They... they never returned.
The rakghouls took my wife! I can only pray she is dead... I cannot bear to even think of the alternative.
They say anyone bitten by a rakghoul will become a rakghoul themselves. It can't be true, can it? It's too horrible!
Thank you! My wife was one of those banished because she had the rakghoul disease. If you hadn't cured her, I would have never seen her again!
Outcast Woman
I had fine clothes, a beautiful bed - now I wear rags and I sleep on the ground like an animal! Were my crimes so horrible that I should now suffer like this?
We have no food, no weapons - nothing! How can we live like this? We are doomed.
Outcast Woman
The rakghouls are increasing in number. We cannot even venture beyond the gates for food without being attacked!
The rakghouls will devour us all, unless we starve to death first.
Thank you... my husband was one of those banished because he had the rakghoul disease. If you hadn't cured him, I would have never seen him again!

Infected Outcasts

From the elevator you'll see the Outcast healer to your right, a human female standing to the left of a gate to a pen at the southwest end of the village. If you speak to her or open the gate to the pen and start to go through it, she warns you:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: Wait, up-worlder. You can't go through this gate. There is too much danger and suffering beyond. For your own sake, turn back.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Who are you? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I want to ask you some questions.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: I am Esala, healer of this village. I use my knowledge and what little resources we have to care for the Outcasts who are sick and injured. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: If you have questions you should speak to Gendar. He's the leader of this village. All my attention has to stay focused on trying to ease the suffering of those within the village.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: But despite my medical training, there is nothing I can do to help the poor souls locked on the other side of this gate.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Danger and suffering? What are you talking about? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. You can't tell me where I can and can't go! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. What are you talking about?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: I'm only warning you for your own protection, up-worlder.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: The villagers infected with the rakghoul disease are quarantined beyond this gate. It's only a matter of time until they transform into horrible creatures that would destroy us all.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: So you just lock them away in a cage?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: For the sake of the village, we have to keep the infected ones locked away. And when they finally do transform into rakghouls we'll let them destroy each other.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. There must be something someone can do!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: Nothing can be done for the infected villagers. Even the serum to counteract the rakghoul disease wouldn't be any use, now. Nobody would be foolish enough to risk going into the pens to give them the cure: the infected ones could transform into rakghouls and attack them at any moment.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. So you'll just leave the infected ones to die? You're a coward!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: I can't help the infected ones. They have to die so that the rest of the village can live. I accept this. If you think that makes me a coward, so be it.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I'm going through those gates to try and help the infected ones!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: I can't stop you from going through the gates, up-worlder. But if the infected ones have already transformed into rakghouls you'll be walking into your grave.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 5. Goodbye. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I need healing.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: Farewell.
Journal Entry Added Infected Outcasts
Several of the Outcasts have been infected with the rakghoul disease. They have been placed in quarantine away from the others so that when they transform into rakghouls they won't ravage the rest of the village.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: Back again. Is there something else you need?

You can return to her at any time for healing. If you go through the gate into the pen anyway, you'll see three infected Outcasts standing to the right:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Please, help us! We are infected with the rakghoul disease. At any moment we could... unh! NO! This cannot be! Nooo!!
Journal Entry Added Infected Outcasts
A number of the infected Outcasts have already transformed into rakghouls, it's too late for them. But there are others who could be saved if someone were to administer the rakghoul serum to counteract their disease.

On Hit: Poison, Average Weakness20 None

These rakghouls all have On Hit: Poison, Average Weakness, which causes a target to suffer as though poisoned, unless a Fortitude saving throw is made at a DC of 20. Failure causes the loss of six points from each physical attribute (1 point every 6 seconds over 36 seconds). A successful save negates this effect. This does not affect droids. Although the loss of attributes is temporary, the loss of Constitution affects both current and maximum Vitality, which could result in death before the duration expires.

If you're having difficulty killing them, you and any party can run back outside the gate: the rakghouls don't follow. Alternatively, enter Solo mode before running inside to the left, to the southeast corner with the remaining two infected Outcasts: again, the rakghouls cannot reach you or any party you run into the southeast corner as well, and in both cases they turn and return to the northwest corner. You can then pick them off with ranged weapons or grenades: although they charge after being targeted, they turn and return before they reach you.

Experience Points (XP) Received:

Two more infected Outcasts, male and female, standing in the southeast corner. If you speak to either of them, they ask for your help:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Please... you have to help us. We beg you. We don't want to end up like the others. Please help us. We can't end up like them.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Don't worry – I'm here to help you. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Who are you? Why are you locked away from the rest of the village?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: You... you will help us? Bless you, up-worlder! But... you must hurry!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: We have the rakghoul disease. It is only a matter of time until we are transformed into terrible creatures like those who attacked you when you first came into the pen. It is too late for them. Soon it will be too late for us and we will transform into those horrible rakghouls ourselves!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Don't worry... I'll be back when I find a cure for you! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Goodbye.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Please hurry, up-worlder. We don't have much time until the transformation.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Don't forget about us, up-worlder. If you find any way to cure us of this disease, please come back and help us.

If you speak to either of them again after saying you'll help them:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Do you... do you have the cure, up-worlder? Have you come to save us from the horrible fate of the others?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Get away from me you diseased mongrels! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Forget it. I'm not wasting the cure on an Outcast! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Goodbye.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Go then up-worlder. Leave us here to die, abandoned by everyone!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Why have you come back, up-worlder? Do you come to mock us in our suffering as the disease destroys us?

You can move closer to the dark side of the Force if you decide to kill them instead of finding a cure (being unarmed and unarmored, they shouldn't present a challenge):

Dark Side Points Gained: -2
2. I think I'll kill you so you don't infect anyone else!
Journal Entry Added Infected Outcasts
You've decided it would be more efficient to just slaughter the infected Outcasts rather than help them.

Alternatively, you can seek a cure. Rakghoul Serum can be found on the corpse of a Sith soldier outside the Lower Sewers entrance in the Undercity, to the south of the village gate. Once you have it, you can announce the fact to Gendar and the Outcast healer if you like, but you can just go straight to the infected Outcasts:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I have a serum to save your people from the rakghoul disease. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I have brought you a serum to cure the rakghoul disease.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: You are generous to offer this to us, up-worlder... you have my thanks. But I know nothing of administering the serum. You should bring it to the village healer. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: Your offer is generous, up-worlder, but the serum is useless to us now. The villagers infected with the rakghoul disease have been quarantined beyond this gate. At any moment they could be transformed into terrible monsters. Nobody would be foolish enough to risk going into the pens to give them the cure: the infected ones could transform into rakghouls and attack them at any moment.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I have brought you a serum to cure the rakghoul disease.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: You... you have a cure? Please, give it to me. Please. Quickly, before it's too late.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. What will you give me in exchange for this cure?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: We... we have nothing, up-worlder. We are Outcasts. All we have are the clothes on our backs. Please, up-worlder. Show us mercy. Give us the cure out of the goodness of your heart!
Light Side Points Gained: +2
1. Here, take this rakghoul serum. I have enough for both of you.
Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Quickly – I must inject it before it is too late. Yes... I feel it working! I feel the disease burning away! It... it is like a miracle! I am cured! Thank you, up-worlder. You have saved us from a fate worse than death. I only wish I had some reward to give you. Maybe you can find something worthwhile in the wreckage of the Republic escape pod.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Republic escape pod? What are you talking about? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I was just happy to help.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: Not long ago an escape pod crashed in the Undercity, far to the northeast of the village. We were going to try and salvage equipment from it but we were attacked by the rakghouls and infected. I'd tell you more if I could, but our salvage team never reached the pod. It's probably still there, unless some of the other up-worlders already found it and picked it clean.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Infected Outcast: We should go now, up-worlder. We're anxious to return to the village and see our families again. Thank you once again for everything you have done.

Oddly, you gain much more experience if you speak to the female. If you speak to the Outcast healer or Gendar again:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Outcast Healer: You amaze me. I always thought the surface dwellers couldn't care less about us Outcasts. But you risked everything to help those infected villagers! I wish I had some type of reward to give you, but we Outcasts have nothing. All I can offer is the gratitude of the entire village. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: You have done a great thing for my village, up-worlder. Few from the surface would bother to cure an Outcast of the rakghoul disease, as you have done. My only regret is that I have no reward to give you for your aid, save my thanks and the thanks of my people.

Gendar's Tent

From the elevator you can see a man in the distance to the southeast, standing outside a tent. If you've questioned Shaleena thoroughly you'll know this is Gendar, the village leader. You can speak to him, although it isn't necessary:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Greetings, up-worlder. We rarely see your kind here in the Undercity. I find it strange that so many of you have come down from the surface recently.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: No offense, but I can see why people normally avoid this place.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Why have you come into this dark and sunless place? Is there something you need of me or my village? I will help you however I can.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Who are you people? Why do you live here in the Undercity?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: We are the Outcasts – shunned from the surface for our crimes and banished here to the Undercity. We banded together to form this village that we might survive in this hostile environment. I am Gendar, the leader of this village: as my father was, and as was his father before him. Many of us have been here for generations, our ancestors cast down long ago. There is no return to the surface for us, or our descendants. But somehow we manage to survive amidst the filth and roaming bands of deadly rakghouls.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. What a horrible way to live!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Life down here can be difficult. It can break the spirit... many in the village have become bitter and hopeless. Especially those newly cast down. But life goes on, and we must try to make the best of what we have. And maybe someday we will find a better life... Ha! Listen to me. I'm starting to sound like Rukil.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Rukil?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: The oldest man in the village. He is a kind soul, but I am afraid he is growing weary of this world. He dreams of escaping, of finding a better world. If you wish to speak to him you can probably find him wandering about the village. As I said, a kind man – though he does cling to his illusions.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Tell me about the rakghouls that live down here.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: The rakghouls are monsters, hideous mutations who feast on the flesh of our villagers. Their diseased jaws can infect those they attack, transforming the victim into one of those abominations. We know of no cure for the disease, and for the good of the village we must banish any who become infected, lest they transform and turn on us.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I want to ask you some questions.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Ask your questions, up-worlder. I will answer to the best of my knowledge, though I know little beyond the borders of the Undercity.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I'm looking for a Twi'lek named Mission Vao.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Yes, I have seen this Twi'lek many times, though I have never spoken to her. She and her Wookiee companion often pass through our village on their way to explore the sewers.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. How can I get to the sewers?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: There are two entrances into the sewers from the Undercity: one to the north-east of our village, the other to the south-east. But the sewers are dangerous, UpWorlder. If you dare to travel those dark tunnels you would be wise to go heavily armed, unless you wish to become a meal for the rakghouls and other foul creatures.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. You said something about other up-worlders who came by here recently?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Our village has seen many visitors from the surface recently: armoured troops, swoop gang members, mercenaries. They come to search our sunless world. They are even searching the sewers.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 5. I think I'll be going now.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: As you wish, up-worlder. Should you have need of anything else, come speak to me. I represent the entire village and I will do my best to help you however I can.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Welcome back, up-worlder. I am surprised to see you again. Many of your kind have passed through our village recently, but few have bothered to speak with me or my people.

Rukil's Tent

Rukil's tent is opposite Gendar's tent, to the south then east of the Lower City elevator. If you speak to him:

Rukil's Apprentice

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: You – you come from the world above! Is this the time of destiny, then? Is this a portent of the salvation of my people? Or merely another false sign to mislead us from the path? Are you the herald of prophecy? The beacon to guide us through the darkness? Or are you merely another harbinger of shattered dreams and unfulfilled promises?
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: Watch yourself: this guy's star chart is missing a few galaxies, if you know what I mean. KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: Be careful... this one might be crazy enough to be dangerous.
KotOR Icon Bastila.png Bastila: This old man's demeanor may seem crazed, but I sense there is a purpose behind it, a benevolent one. He is no danger to us.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Speak to me, up-worlder! Tell me what fate you unleash upon us – salvation or damnation! Speak, up-worlder – I beg you!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. What are you talking about, old man? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Uh... okay, then. Could I ask you some questions? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. You're obviously an insane old kook.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: A question. You are uncertain. Bewildered. Perplexed. Understandable, I suppose. Even after a hundred years of life I myself still become confused at times. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Old, yes. But not insane. Oh no, not insane at all! I am as rational as any man can be after a hundred years in the filth and darkness of the Undercity!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Perhaps I can make things more clear. Some things, at least. My name is Rukil, the oldest Outcast here in the village. Rukil Wrinkle-Skin, the children call me sometimes.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I'm Name. What do you want from me, Rukil? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Get to the point, old man!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Once I was honoured for my wisdom, but over time the villagers fell away from the true path. Eventually there was only a single apprentice who followed me – and now she is gone, too.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. The true path? What does that mean? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. What happened to your apprentice? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I don't have time for this nonsense. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Okay, enough of this. So long, you crazy freak.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: No, no, no. Not yet. I must be wary. Careful. You may be a false savior. Dare I share my secrets with you? No... not until you prove yourself. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Please, a moment up-worlder. I must know if you are the one I have been waiting for. Please, I beg for your help.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Prove myself? How can I do that?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: My apprentice is... lost. I sent her out into the Undercity to find... well, I cannot tell you. Not yet. Sadly, my apprentice has not returned. Please, up-worlder – will you help an old man? Will you seek out my apprentice in the Undercity? Her name is Malya. I must know of her fate, whatever it may be. I must know what she... found.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I will help you with this, Rukil. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. What will you give me if I help you?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Finding her may be difficult; Malya could be anywhere in the Undercity... but if you find her I will know you to be our true savior! Only then can I reveal my secret knowledge to you.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Forget it, old man. I'm not interested. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I'm not going to waste my time looking for your apprentice! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I'll be back if I find anything out.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Then... perhaps you are not the one I have been waiting for. Should you change your mind, up-worlder, speak with me again. Come to me if you learn the fate of my apprentice. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I wish you luck, up-worlder. Come speak with me again once you have discovered the fate of my apprentice.
Journal Entry Added Rukil's Apprentice
Rukil of the Outcast village has asked you to discover the fate of his missing apprentice, a young woman named Malya. She never returned from a mission Rukil sent her on some time ago, though he refuses to tell you what she was searching for when she left the village.

If you speak to him again without discovering the fate of Malya:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Greetings once more, up-worlder. Do you bring news of my apprentice? Have you discovered her fate, and proved yourself to be a true savior of my people?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I want to ask you some questions. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I haven't found her yet, but I will.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: You seek my wisdom, but I dare not share my knowledge with you. Not yet. Not until you prove yourself to be the one foretold, the one who will guide us to salvation. Find my apprentice. Discover what fate has befallen her and I will know you are worthy, and not another false prophet sent to mislead my people! KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I wish you luck, up-worlder. Come speak with me again once you have discovered the fate of my apprentice.

You'll find an Outcast corpse out in the Undercity to the northwest of the village gate. Upon searching it, you'll find a journal which you can return to Rukil as evidence of her fate:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Your apprentice is dead. I have her journal.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: It is as I feared, then. She joins the list of those who have given their lives in the service of our cause. But though I am saddened by this news, there is yet hope. By finding my apprentice you have proved yourself worthy, up-worlder. You are to be the beacon on our path to salvation. You will guide us to the Promised Land!
Journal Entry Added Rukil's Apprentice
You've given Rukil the journal of his missing apprentice, confirming what the older man suspected: she perished while searching for the mythical Promised Land.

Promised Land

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Guide you? But I don't even know where the Promised Land is! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I think you have me confused with someone else. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Hold on a second – I'm not guiding anybody anywhere!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: You are marked, up-worlder – even my dim old eyes can see the mantle of destiny that cloaks you. Perhaps old Rukil knows you better than you know yourself. I am old – I have lived a hundred years in the Undercity, cast down into the darkness. I know the legends and history of our people – and now you must learn it, too.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I'm not interested in the history of your people.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I offer you wisdom and you turn me away? Perhaps you are not ready to accept the role you must play in the destiny and salvation of my people. Very well, up-worlder. Return to me when you are ready to learn what you must learn.
Journal Entry Added The Promised Land
Rukil has offered to tell you the history of the Outcasts who dwell in the Undercity. It seems to have something to do with a prophecy and 'the Promised Land', whatever that may be.

You can't help but wonder if the old man is suffering from some type of dementia.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Shaleena: I saw you talking with Rukil. It's nice of you to help him; though I don't want to get my hopes up. I mean, the Promised Land... how could it be true? It's just that sometimes Rukil seems so certain. And then you show up, just like the up-world savior from the legends... If Rukil's right this could be a whole new life for the village! No more rakghoul attacks, no more starvation... *sigh*, I shouldn't get my hopes up. Not yet. But... but I will wish you good luck, on behalf of the entire village.

Rukil tells you the history of the Outcasts:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: You return, up-worlder. Are you ready now to learn what you must learn? Are you ready to hear the history of my people?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Very well – tell me the history of your people.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: The great city of Taris covers the entire surface of this planet. There is no land to grow food. Kelp harvests and the creatures of the sea are our only food source. A century ago rising levels of toxic pollution poisoned the oceans and famine swept the planet. The rich hoarded food for their own use, and the poor were left to starve and die.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: From what I've seen of Taris, it doesn't look like much has changed. Except for the Upper City, people here are just as bad off as the poor in your little history.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: But the poor rose up against this tyranny and civil war engulfed the planet. Millions died in the fighting and huge sections of Taris were destroyed or abandoned. The rebellion was crushed in the end, thousands were taken prisoner. The jails could not hold them all, and so the practice of banishing all prisoners to the Undercity was born.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Is that how you came to be down here? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. What does this have to do with me? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Are you going to get to the point soon?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Many brave men and women were banished here to the Undercity for their part in the rebellion. People like my father and grandfather were cast down, along with their families.
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: What did you expect? If they could get away with it the Tarisian nobles would stuff their own mothers down here to make more room in the Upper City.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Now we live a dark existence beneath the streets of Taris, a life devoid of all hope but one: the Promised Land. And you will be the one to show us the way to get there.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I'm not interested in this.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I offer you wisdom and you turn me away? Perhaps you are not ready to accept the role you must play in the destiny and salvation of my people. Very well, up-worlder. Return to me when you are ready to learn what you must learn.

Rukil tells you about the Promised Land:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. The Promised Land? What's that? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. How can I lead you this Promised Land when I don't even know what it is? KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: You return, up-worlder. Are you ready now to learn what you must learn? Are you ready to learn of the Promised Land?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Tell me about the Promised Land.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Legends tell of a self-sufficient colony founded just before the famine and lost during the civil war; a paradise beneath the Undercity where droid servants tend to every need. For many years I searched for the Promised Land, just as my grandfather and father did before me. When I became old and gray my apprentice continued the search on my behalf.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: Sounds like a myth to me. Something to give the people here some false hope to cling to so they don't go mad with despair.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I have collected many clues hinting at its location; the journal of my apprentice provides yet more information. But still there are too many pieces missing from this puzzle. But I know my father and grandfather each had journals where they recorded their own discoveries. Perhaps with their journals I could at last uncover its hidden location.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. And you want me to find these missing journals? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. What will I get if I find these missing journals for you? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. I'm not wasting my time looking for these journals!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I have nothing to offer if you help me in this. I hope the knowledge that you are helping the entire village escape a life of darkness and suffering is reward enough. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Please, up-worlder – I am too old to search for the missing journals myself, and the other villagers think the Promised Land is nothing but a myth.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Don't worry, Rukil. I'll find those journals. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Sorry, I need an actual reward if you want my help. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Forget it.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: It is many decades since my father set out on his journey, but I remember he was eager to explore the sewers. You might want to begin your search there. I wish you luck in your quest, up-worlder. The future survival of this village – of my people – depends on you. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I see. Well, perhaps you are not the savior I seek after all. I can only pray that if you find the journals you will have a change of heart and bring them to me.
Journal Entry Added The Promised Land
Rukil believes that with his apprentice's journal and the journals of his father and grandfather he could piece together the clues and discover the location of the promised land. He's asked you to bring the journals to him.

Igear now approaches you as you pass him on your way back to the Village Gate:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: I saw you talking with Rukil. He told you his legends about the Promised Land, didn't he? He told you all about his missing apprentice and the other lost explorers, right? You know, most people don't believe his stories – they figure he's nothing but an old kook. But I think there might be some truth in what he's saying. That's why I want to stop him!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Stop him? What are you talking about? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Why are you telling me this? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I don't have time for this.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Oh, don't worry, I'll make this quick. I've got an offer that might be worth your while.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: For an Outcast, I've got things pretty good. The village relies on me to bring in food and supplies – I'm an important man. If it wasn't for Gendar I'd be running this place.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: I get the feeling if it wasn't for Gendar, this place would be a lot worse off than it is.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: But if Rukil ever finds his Promised Land, I'm sunk. People won't need to rely on me anymore. I'll just be another nobody like all the rest of the villagers. I won't let that happen!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. That's horrible! How can you be so self-centered? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. So what do you want me to do? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. You want me to kill Rukil to shut him up?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Don't judge me! I learned a long time ago that if I want to survive down here I've got to look out for number one. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: The two explorers who went searching for the Promised Land might have found something. They might have found clues or evidence – just like Rukil's apprentice! KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: I don't want you to kill Rukil – he's not the problem. It's those damn explorers that went before him. What if they actually found something?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: They would have recorded that information in their journals. I'll pay you if you bring all three journals to me – the two from the explorers and the one from Rukil's apprentice. Then I can destroy the evidence and make sure nobody ever finds the Promised Land! I've saved up enough credits from my business here to make it worth your while if you help me.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Forget it! I won't betray Rukil and the village for you. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I'll think about it. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Sounds like a good deal to me.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Don't be a fool. I'm the only one here who can pay you for those journals. Rukil has nothing – he won't be able to come up with any kind of reward.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Once you have all three journals just bring them to me and I'll give you a decent reward. Now, was there something else you needed?
Journal Entry Added The Promised Land
The shopkeeper Igear wants you to bring him the missing journals of those who died searching for the Promised Land so he can destroy them. He's also offered to pay you for the journals, something Rukil can't do.

The two remaining journals can both be found in the lower sewers. Once you have them, you can return to Rukil:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Welcome back, up-worlder. How goes your quest? Have you found the journals of my father and grandfather?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I have one of the journals you're looking for. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I don't have all the journals yet, but I will find them. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I can't waste any more time with your quest.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Yes, up-worlder... well done. However, I see that this journal alone does not have enough clues for me to solve this mystery. Too many pieces are still missing. I'm afraid that only with all three journals – my grandfather's, my father's and my apprentice's – will I be able to discover the location of the Promised Land. I will leave this journal with you for safe keeping for now. Perhaps it will aid you in your search for the others. I wish you luck, up-worlder – for the sake of the entire village.

Giving him the journals moves you (much) closer to the light side of the Force, but do not do so until you have completed any other quests you have in the Undercity and you are ready to move on:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I have all three journals. Here – take them.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Can it be true? Is it possible that at long last the dream of my father and grandfather before him will be fulfilled? I... I can hardly bear to look. Hmmm... yes. Yes! Of course! Now I understand – it all makes sense! Now I see why the Promised Land has been so hard to find! It is so obvious!
Light Side Points Gained: +6
Rukil: You have done a great thing, up-worlder – a selfless act that will bring great joy to all the people of this village! I must take this to Gendar right away!
Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Rukil? What do you want now? Have you more fables of a hidden paradise just waiting for us to find it?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: You may not think these are fables after you see what I have brought you, Gendar! Look at these journals!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: What... no. It can't be! Are these real, Rukil? Is this information accurate?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I swear to you everything in these journals is true, Gendar. The Promised Land – I told you I would find it!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: The entrance is far from here, Rukil. It will take us weeks to get there... perhaps even months. And we will have to cross many rakghoul-infested areas.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: I do not deny the journey will be hard, Gendar. But surely it is better than the miserable life we have here!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gendar: Wise words, Rukil. Our supplies are high right now – we could leave by nightfall! I will tell the others to prepare for the journey.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: Thank you once again, up-worlder. I will say a final goodbye, for where we are going I fear you cannot come. The journey to the Promised Land is long and arduous.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Goodbye, Rukil – and good luck. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Maybe I should come with you. I could help you on the journey.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: No, up-worlder, I cannot ask that. The journey will take many, many weeks. And those who make the journey cannot return – that was the final secret of the Promised Land. When the colony was created it was designed so that people could enter willingly, but they could never leave again. This was to ensure secrecy on the project.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Rukil: We must part ways here, up-worlder. I sense your destiny is yet to be chosen, but the destiny of my people is at the end of the long journey ahead of us.
Journal Entry Added The Promised Land
The Outcasts have left in a mass exodus, going to seek out the fabled paradise of the Promised Land. The journey will be difficult, but by recovering the journals you’ve given the Outcasts something they haven’t had in a long, long time: hope.

All inhabitants of the Outcast village, including the Infected Outcasts, leave. Alternatively, you can give the journals to Igear:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I have those journals you wanted.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: I knew Rukil's legends about the Promised Land were true! Quick – give me those journals so I can destroy them!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I've changed my mind. I'm going to give them to Rukil.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Fine – go to Rukil! But he won't be able to pay you anything for those journals. Come back and see me when you're ready to stop acting crazy and you want to cut a deal.

Otherwise:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. First hand over those credits you promised.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Right – your reward. Here's 100 credits; that's a pretty hefty payment for some old notes and maps, eh?

The number of credits you receive for the journals depends on how persuasive you can be:

Medium 2. [Persuade] 100 credits? After all I went through? I want double that!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: [Success] Well, I don't want Rukil to get his hands on them journals. I'll give you 200 credits – that's all I have. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: [Failure] I don't think you understand how much 100 credits is worth down here in the Undercity. This is a small fortune! I want those journals, but I'm not rich like you up-worlders. 100 credits is all I can afford.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. 200 credits? It's a deal! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. 100 credits sounds fair. Here's the journals.
KotOR Icon Credits.png Credits Received: 200 KotOR Icon Credits.png Credits Received: 100
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Excellent – now Rukil will never lead these people to the Promised Land! Now, is there something else you need? You want to look at my inventory?
Dark Side Points Gained: -2
Rukil: False prophet! Deceiver! You have betrayed me! You have sold the hopes of the entire village to the selfish and damnable Igear! All I have worked for is destroyed! All the hopes and dreams of my father and grandfather before him turned to dust! Begone, up-worlder – I have only curses to speak at you!

You've given the journals to Igear, forever condemning Rukil and the other Outcasts to their grim and hopeless existence. But at least you made a nice profit on the deal.

Igear's Bazaar

Igear stands to the northwest, beyond Gendar and Rukil. If you approach or speak to him:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Hey, you ain't from the village! You're from the up-world, ain't you? Yes, you've got credits I bet.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: Watch yourself. There's something slimy about this guy. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: My name's Igear. I run a little salvage shop here. You want to buy something from my store? I got some good deals.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. How do you manage to run a store here in the Undercity?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: If a villager comes across any useful salvage in the Undercity they bring it to me. Every so often members from the Lower City gangs come down to trade for the salvage. They'll exchange food and medicine for engine parts, old blasters and the like. Sometimes they even give me credits if I have some really good stuff.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I want to ask you some questions.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Oh, you better ask Gendar – he's the spokesman for the village. I just run the store. I don't want to make him mad by answering any questions. Gendar already doesn't like me.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Why doesn't Gendar like you?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Gendar seems to think I should share the profits of my store with the whole village. He figures we're all in this together so it should be share and share alike. But I'm the one who runs the store! I'm the one who makes the deals! The others just bring me salvage to trade with the up-worlders – why should they get anything?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. That's a pretty selfish attitude. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I agree with you – your store, your profits. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. That's why Gendar's mad at you? There has to be more to it than that!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Hey, you don't know what it's like down here! I have to claw and scrape to survive – nobody else will look out for me. But Gendar doesn't agree with my philosophy. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Exactly my point. But Gendar doesn't see it that way.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: He caught me hoarding supplies a while back. I figured I'd wait until food was scarce and then I could offer it to people who'd follow me instead of Gendar. Then I'd be the leader! But Gendar made me share my hoard. Ever since then he hasn't trusted me. He keeps me around because of my store, though. Without it this village wouldn't stand a chance.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. I'll be going now.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Yeah, okay. You come back and see me if you want to deal.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: Hey there, up-worlder. You want to see what I got for sale in my inventory? Or do you need something else?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Let me see your inventory.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Igear: It ain't the best stuff – mostly salvage and such. But the prices are right.

Village Gate

The main gate to the village, leading out into the rest of the Undercity, is at the northeast end. You'll see a man and a woman standing to its right, and as you approach it becomes clear a crisis is in progress, as a man pursued by a rakghoul struggles to reach the safety of the village.

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: Hurry, Hendar, hurry! I can hear it coming!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: He'll never make it. He's doomed. Argh! I told him he was a fool to leave the village.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: He WILL make it! Run, Hendar! Run!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hendar: Open the gate! Quickly! There isn't much time!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: Ugh... I... I can't... the rakghouls are too close!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: The mutants will kill him if you don't open the gate!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: And if I open the gate they will kill us all!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: No! You can't do this! It isn't fair!

At this point the woman, Hester, appeals to you:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: Please, make him open the gate. Hendar will die if he doesn't!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: I can't open the gate... not while the rakghouls are so near.

Your responses favor sacrificing Hendar for the safety of the village (and yourself)...

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. You're right, it's too dangerous. Leave the gate closed. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Keep the gate closed. I'm not risking my life here.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: You monster! How can you say that? Somebody do something!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: I'm sorry, Hester – there's nothing we can do. It's too late for Hendar now.

When Hendar dies:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: No! Hendar – no!

The rakghoul runs off to the right of the gate (but is still within sight). If you try to speak to Hester:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: Don't speak to me, up-worlder! You could have saved Hendar. You just stood and watched him die! You're as selfish as all the rest from the surface! Please, just leave me alone with my grief.

With Hendar dead Hester leaves, but you need to speak to the gate guard:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: A horrible fate for poor Hendar... I warned him not to leave the safety of the village. But I couldn't open the gate... not while the rakghouls were so close. I had to protect the village. But enough of this grim talk... we must focus on the positive if we are to survive down here. How can I help you, up-worlder?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Who are you?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: I am Trewin, from the Outcast village. It's my job to guard the gates and see they are locked to protect us from the rakghouls.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I want to ask you some questions.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: Heh. I just guard the gates. Gendar is the leader of the village, up-worlder. You should speak to him if you have any questions.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Open the gate for me. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Goodbye.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: I will open the gate for you, up-worlder, but you've got to be quick. In a few seconds I must close and lock it again for the safety of the village. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: Goodbye, up-worlder.

Alternatively:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Open the gate... I will kill the rakghouls.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: You would risk your life for a stranger? Heh. You are brave, up-worlder. I will open the gate for you, but you've got to be quick. In a few seconds I must close and lock it again.

Even if you're playing a dark side character this response is recommended: you have to go out into the Undercity and the rakghoul that attacks Hendar will attack you as well anyway, so it's better to face it with Hendar to distract it (only as long as he lives, of course: he can still die despite your intervention). The gate remains locked and impossible to open until the rakghoul is dead:

If playing a dark side character, make sure not to speak to Hester when you return to the village, or speak to Hendar first. Although the resulting dialog is identical, you only move closer to the light side of the Force if you speak to Hester:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hendar: I can't thank you enough for saving me, up-worlder. If I had anything but these rags on my back it would be yours. But we have nothing. Light Side Points Gained: +2
Hendar: I can't thank you enough for saving me, up-worlder. If I had anything but these rags on my back it would be yours. But we have nothing.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Hester: I still have you, Hendar. That's all I need. Let's go back to the village.

They now leave. You can speak to the gate guard, but since the gate has already been opened you don't need to do so:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Gate Guard: Thank you for saving Hendar. You are braver than I, up-worlder. Maybe we Outcasts have lived too long in selfish fear. Perhaps we can learn a lesson from your brave actions. Hmph. But enough of my ramblings... is there something you need, up-worlder?

Search for Bastila

Having killed the rakghoul that chased Hendar to the village gate, you can explore the remainder of the Undercity safe in the knowledge that you can return to the village at any time.

However, regardless of which direction you move, a blue Twi'lek female you might have seen and spoken to before outside the tap room of Javyar's cantina in the Lower City comes running towards you from the northeast:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. You're Mission Vao, right? Gadon Thek said you could help me. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Whoa, slow down, Mission. What's wrong?
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: Gadon? What? I... I don't know what you're talking about. Please – Zaalbar's in trouble. He needs help or they're going to sell him into slavery! KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: It's Zaalbar. He's in trouble - big trouble! We have to help him. If we don't they'll sell him into slavery!

You can be unhelpful:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I don't have time for this! Gadon said you'd help me get inside the Vulkar base.
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: Listen, my friend Zaalbar is in serious trouble, so you can forget about me helping with anything else until I get him back!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Calm down, Mission. Take a deep breath and tell me what happened. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Zaalbar? You mean your Wookiee friend? What happened? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Who's going to sell him into slavery? What are you talking about? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Fine – tell me what happened and I'll see if I can help you.
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: Me... me and Zaalbar were just wandering around here in the Undercity. You know, looking for stuff we could find, just kind of exploring. We do it all the time.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: I guess with a Wookiee at your side you've got to figure you can handle the odd rakghoul attack.
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: Only this time they were waiting for us. Gamorrean slave hunters. We didn't even have a chance to run. Big Z threw himself at them, and he roared for me to run! I... I took off; I figured Zaalbar would be right behind me. But there were too many of them – he couldn't get away. They're going to sell him to a slaver – I just know it!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. You just ran off and left him? Some friend you are.
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: I didn't mean to leave him! I thought he was right behind me – I'd never abandon Big Z on purpose! Please – help me get him back.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Wait here. I'll be back when I find Zaalbar.
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: No way. I'm the one that got Zaalbar into this mess, so I'm coming with you. I'm not going to abandon him again!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Do you know where they took him?
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: I don't know for sure, but those Gamorreans like to hang out in the sewers. The stink reminds them of home, I guess. That's probably where they took Big Z.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Why don't you ask Gadon and the Beks to help you?
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: I can't ask Gadon – he's always telling me not to go into the Undercity. He says it's too dangerous with the rakghouls and Gamorreans and all. He'll never send his Beks down there.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I don't have time for your Wookiee. I need to find a way into the Vulkar base. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Forget it, kid. You're on your own.
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: Hold on a second. Don't just brush her off like this; Gadon said this girl's the only one who can get us inside the Vulkar base.
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: Pleeeze! There's nobody else who can help me! Listen – if you help me get Zaalbar back, I'll help you get inside the Vulkar base. Come on, what do you say?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. No deal.
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: How can you be so stubborn? When you're ready to help me with Zaalbar come on back – because you'll never get into that Vulkar base without my help!
Journal Entry Added The Search for Bastila
You've met Mission Vao, a young Twi'lek who can get you inside the Black Vulkar base to recover the stolen swoop accelerator. But Mission refuses to help you unless you help rescue her Wookiee friend, Zaalbar, from the Gamorrean slavers in the sewers.

You won't be able to continue with the search for Bastila beyond a certain point without her, so it's best to choose the following response the first time you speak to her:

KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: You're back – does this mean you're going to help me now? Does this mean you're going to help me get Zaalbar back?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. If I help you get Zaalbar back you have to get me inside the Vulkar base.
Dialog
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: It's a deal – as soon as we get Big Z back, I'll show you a way into that Vulkar base! Now, come on – We have to find Zaalbar before they sell him to slavers – or worse!
KotOR Icon Carth.png Carth: Do you know where he's being kept?
KotOR Icon Mission.png Mission: The Gamorreans make their camps in the sewers. I bet that's where we'll find Zaalbar – and that's where I'll show you the secret entrance into the Vulkar compound.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. [MISSION has joined your party.]

Journal Entry Added The Search for Bastila
Mission has agreed to help you sneak into the Black Vulkar base to recover the stolen swoop accelerator. But first, she wants you to rescue her Wookiee friend, Zaalbar, from the Gamorrean slavers in the sewers.

Once she's added to your party you can remove her again immediately, although since you don't have to remove anyone to add her and you cannot find Zaalbar without her, it makes sense to keep her unless you're playing solo for the challenge. Otherwise, an extra gun is always welcome and her skill with Demolitions will come in useful in the Undercity and sewers. However, you should probably find Zaalbar before exploring the Undercity much further.

Sewers

The closest entrance to the sewers is to the northwest of the village gate, in the corner on the right. You can get to it without any more encounters, and a pile of rubble just before the entrance can be searched for random contents.

There's another entrance to the sewers further away to the southeast, in the corner on the left. A skeletal corpse to the south, beyond the sewer entrance, can be searched for random contents. You'll encounter a Sith patrol and rakghouls on your way there, and it's not as close to your objectives in the sewers, but there are a couple of quests you can complete in the process.

Rukil's Apprentice

If you travel to the northwest then west of the village gate before completing the search for Bastila, in the distance you'll see a trio of mercenaries led by a familiar figure from outside the west Lower City apartments. As you approach, so do they:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Mercenary: Don't... don't move! I'm... I'm not afraid to use this blaster if I have to!
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: Settle down, kid. We've already lost enough men to those damn rakghouls! The last thing we need now is more casualties from a needless firefight. Hm... by the looks of you I'd say you're down here for the same reason we are: to salvage something from those downed Republic space pods. Let me give you some advice: forget about it. Do yourself a favor and just head back the way you came.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Are you threatening me? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Why – is there some danger down here? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Who are you? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. I go where I want, when I want.
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: Mandalorians don't make threats, we make promises. But I'm just trying to give you a friendly warning. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Mercenary: That's Canderous Ordo! He's the most famous Mandalorian mercenary in this sector of the galaxy! KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: Trying to pick a fight with a Mandalorian – I can see you're not too bright. But I'm on a mission for Davik, so I don't have time for fun and games.
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: This isn't a good place to stand around chatting. The Undercity is crawling with rakghouls. I've already lost half a dozen men to those monsters.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Mercenary: Canderous, I heard something! Over there, in the shadows! Sounded like a rakghoul!
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: Looks like we've got company! Get those blasters ready, boys!

You're interrupted when four rakghouls come running from the west; fortunately Canderous and his mercenaries stand between you.

Canderous Ordo and the mercenary who spoke to you cannot be reduced below 1 Vitality, so you can just stand back and let them kill all four rakghouls: you'll still receive experience from the kills, although this won't be recorded in Feedback. However, just for fun you may want to see if you can save the other two blaster-wielding mercenaries (the survivor uses a Blaster Carbine, but all use a Vibroblade in melee combat).

KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: Damn! I told Davik this salvage mission was a bad idea! His men aren't trained for this kind of thing, and I can't babysit them all! Okay, boys... we're getting out of here before I lose anyone else. I can't carry all this salvage back by myself! You'd be smart to get out of here as well. Even if you can handle the rakghouls I doubt there's anything worth finding anymore.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. What do you mean by that?
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: Davik sent me down here with this motley crew to scavenge whatever we could from the Republic escape pods that crashed during the recent battle overhead. But the Lower City gangs got here first. Anything worthwhile in those Republic pods is probably in their hands now. Davik won't like that.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. What can you tell me about Davik?
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: What are you, an off-worlder? Everybody knows Davik. He's a member of the Exchange. You know – the interstellar crime syndicate. Smuggling, gambling, extortion – Davik controls it all here on Taris. That's why I'm working for him. But lately the Lower City gangs have been giving my boss some trouble.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. What do you know about the Lower City gangs?
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: This isn't really the place to have these kind of conversations. But I guess I could spare a couple of seconds for you – after all, you did help us out with those rakghouls. The Lower City is overrun with gangs, but the two most important ones are the Hidden Beks and the Black Vulkars. Used to be the Beks were the big dog and kept the others in line. But lately the Black Vulkars are moving in on Bek turf and challenging them for control. The Vulkars are even starting to defy Davik! Take these escape pods, for example. Everyone knew Davik would want first crack at them, but I know for a fact those damn Vulkars have already sent their own salvage party down here.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. So you're just going to run back to the surface like some coward? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I better get going now.
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: Normally I'd make you regret those words, but I'm not wasting another minute down here. I'm responsible for this whole company, and they won't survive down here much longer.
KotOR Icon Canderous.png Canderous: Come on boys... let's move out!

After Canderous and any other survivors leave, you'll find Rukil's apprentice beyond them to the west. However, you'll encounter two groups of rakghouls, each led by a rakghoul fiend. Unless otherwise stated, any other rakghouls and fiends you encounter in the Undercity are identical to these.

The first group of two rakghouls and a fiend can be seen at the bottom of a ramp to the south. They can be avoided, but it's better to kill them for safety and experience. You should be able to target them from the top of the ramp even with blaster pistols, and you may be able to pick them off one by one if you're careful. Since rakghoul fiends are visually indistinguishable from other rakghouls except for the label, pay close attention: if they start running towards you, focus all fire on the fiend, and make sure the sturdiest member of your party is leading and ready to engage in melee combat if they manage to close the distance.

Experience Points (XP) Received: Experience Points (XP) Received:

The second group of four rakghouls and a fiend can be seen to the southwest. The ramp down to the west is mined:

Awareness Minor Frag Mine Detect 20 (0) Demolitions Disable 20 (0) Recover 30 (10)

You can move around if you're not willing or able to disable or recover it (unfortunately it cannot be triggered by the rakghouls, and you may want to move each party member past it individually in Solo mode to avoid accidents). As before, you may be able to pick off some of them with ranged weapons before going down the ramp, and if they come running you should focus all fire on the fiend.

Afterwards do not return to hideout to heal, as when you transit back these rakghouls will have been replaced. The previous group can also be replaced if you leave and return to the area after killing them (although there will now be four rakghouls rather than two, and they spawn to the south, at the base of the ramp), as can the group by the southeast entrance to the sewers. However, only one group is replaced each time you leave and return to the area.

Experience Points (XP) Received: Experience Points (XP) Received:

At the bottom of the ramp to the west you'll see a skeletal corpse and corpse to the left, which can both be searched for random contents. To the southwest where the rakghouls were gathered, you'll see rubble which can also be searched for random contents, and an Outcast corpse:

Item(s) Received Outcast Corpse Journal Entry Added Rukil's Apprentice
You've found the journal of Rukil's apprentice near her corpse. You should return to the old man in the Outcast village to tell him of her fate, and to deliver the journal to him.

You can read the journal by selecting it in your inventory, then return it to Rukil in the Outcast village:

This journal details the search for the Promised Land carried out by Rukil's Apprentice. Most of the entries are mundane; however, the last entry is quite interesting:

"I have uncovered evidence that others have been seeking out the fabled land, and that their treks have led them into the sewers. I have decided that I must go there as well."

Escape Pod

To the northeast of the Village Gate you'll see the crash site of a Republic escape pod. As you approach it, you should become aware that the area is mined:

Awareness Minor Frag Mine (4) Detect 20 (0) Demolitions Disable 20 (0) Recover 30 (10)

One is on the left of the escape pod and three are on the right. You should also see a Republic soldier standing at the back on the right, who'll speak to you if you approach him:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Republic Soldier: H... help me! Please! I can... I can feel it inside my skin! Something growing... like some kind of hideous disease!

If you haven't already been to the southeast to acquire Rakghoul Serum, then regardless of your response there's only one outcome:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Wait here... I'll see if I can find something to help you. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I'm sorry... there's nothing I can do for you. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I'll help you, but I need some information first. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. Get away from me, you diseased freak!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Republic Soldier: No... no!!! I can feel... ARGH!

He transforms into a rakghoul, just like the Infected Outcasts in the pen in the southwest corner of the Outcast village:

KotOR Icon Dialog.png Republic Soldier: Bastila? She wasn't in this pod. We were tracking her pod just before we hit the planet's surface. It went down somewhere to the west. We lost the signal when our own pod crashed. Maybe... wait – what was that? Did you hear that? I thought I heard something.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. I don't hear anything. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. Don't change the subject. I still have some questions to ask you. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. You're okay now. KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I want to ask you some questions.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Republic Soldier: Over there... I heard something. I know I did! There it is again! It's those monsters! They're coming back! Run for your lives!

He gets spooked and runs away to the southwest, back towards the village gate, but four rakghouls come running up and one of them kills him.

After killing the cured Republic soldier, four rakghouls stand between your position by the crashed Republic escape pod to your right and the village gate behind them to the left.

This rakghoul may be close enough to become aware of you and your party, in which case it will start running towards you. However, the others are further away.

Sith patrol

To the southeast of the Village Gate you'll see a Sith patrol leader standing in the distance. If you head in that direction you'll be unable to avoid him, as he and two Sith troopers approach you as you approach him. However, you can avoid a fight:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Sith Patrol Leader: You there! Civilian! This is a restricted area! What are you doing down here?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. Look... I have got all the proper security papers.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Sith Patrol Leader: Security papers? Oh... you're one of those trackers the Commander sent down, right? They should have given you an armed escort – it's nasty down here! We've already lost one patrol... we figure the rakghouls got them. We've had so many encounters with those things we've actually run out of rakghoul serum. Plus we've had several skirmishes with looters from those Lower City swoop gangs. I'm telling you, we should just stay in the Upper City where we're in control!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 1. You said you lost one patrol already?
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Sith Patrol Leader: Oh, is that why you're down here? Search and rescue? I didn't think they would send anyone. They were in the southern section of the Undercity when we lost contact. I would have gone to investigate, but my orders are to search for those crashed escape pods... even if it means leaving another patrol to die.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. You just follow your orders and keep looking! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. Why don't you just give up the search? KotOR Icon Dialog.png 5. I should be going now.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Sith Patrol Leader: Hey, I'd never disobey my orders... I'm not a fan of court martials and executions. I was just talking, you know? Nothing anyone has to mention to the Commander. KotOR Icon Dialog.png Sith Patrol Leader: Yeah, sure... the Commander won't be too happy if you come back empty, right? Same thing goes for us.
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Sith Patrol Leader: Come on patrol, let's get back to it. The sooner we get this search done the sooner we can get out of this mutant-infested hole. Move out!

However, even though you cannot acquire Rakghoul Serum from them, they're worth fighting. You should delay doing so until the two Sith troopers have closed the distance to him and stopped walking:

Dialog
KotOR Icon Dialog.png 2. I don't like your tone! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 3. I'm just here to kill you! KotOR Icon Dialog.png 4. You're annoying me – time to die!
KotOR Icon Dialog.png Sith Patrol Leader: You're questioning the Sith? How many people do we have to kill before the rest of you learn some respect? Well, I guess it's time for another lesson. Patrol... attack! KotOR Icon Dialog.png Sith Patrol Leader: Look out! It's an ambush!

All three use their Sith Energy Shield to deflect 30 points of energy or sonic damage in total, although you can have one round of attacks before the shields go up. They each have an Advanced Medpac which they'll use when reduced to less than 50% Vitality. Once their shields are up, it's best to switch to melee weapons for physical damage.

However, due to their high defense a single Frag Grenade is much more effective: it will always kill the two troopers outright and there's 55% chance that it'll do likewise to the patrol leader. Ideally your main character should leave any party members within throwing range, approach in Solo mode and allow enough time during dialog for all three to get close, then when a grenade is thrown only you need to run back out of the explosion's area of effect. If the patrol leader survives and hasn't drawn his Vibroblade, switch to melee weapons and take advantage of the melee on ranged bonus +10 added to your attack rolls.

Rakghoul Serum - No Commentary Light (29:01)

If you travel to the southeast, then southwest of the Village Gate after encountering the Sith patrol, you'll see four rakghouls and a rakghoul fiend at the bottom of a slope. The fiend is stronger than those you may have encountered elsewhere in the Undercity:

The area is wide open and the slope may temporarily cause you to lose sight of them, so once the rakghouls come running you can be swarmed if you're not careful. Although you can try picking them off with ranged weapons, it may be better to see if you can use grenades to cull the herd. Once they come running, focus all fire on the fiend.

Experience Points (XP) Received: Experience Points (XP) Received:

Afterwards do not return to hideout to heal, as when you transit back these rakghouls may be replaced, like those to the north (the stronger rakghoul fiend is replaced by a normal Challenge Rating 3 one). They will also reappear if you use the southeast entrance to the sewers and then return to the Undercity.

This can be exploited to receive more experience and gain levels, although you'll only receive 30 XP for each rakghoul once experience level > 5, and 35 XP for the fiend once level > 7: for example, at level 8 you would receive 155 XP in total and level 9 needs 8000 XP, so you would have to kill this group 52 times to level up. There's no need to do this unless you want your main character to sacrifice Jedi class levels for starting class levels for some reason (more feats with a Soldier or higher Sneak Attack for a Scoundrel, for example).

At the bottom of the slope to the right you'll find a corpse with random contents, and the corpse of a Sith Soldier:

Item(s) Received Corpse - Sith Soldier Journal Entry Added Rakghoul Serum
You've acquired a sample of rakghoul serum. This could be very valuable to the right people.
A vial of greenish, bubbling liquid.

The rakghoul serum allows you to cure the Republic soldier by the escape pod to the northeast, the Infected Outcasts in the pen in the southwest corner of the Outcast village, and then it can be delivered to Zelka Forn in the Upper City's clinic to move closer to the light side of the Force, or Zax in the bounty office of Javyar's cantina in the Lower City for at least 1000 credits and to move closer to the dark side of the Force.
