You start play as Kyle Katarn, the protagonist of the two previous games Star Wars: Dark Forces and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. He starts with the Journeyman Jedi rank with 12 Stars, 7 of which have already been assigned to the following Powers:
Remaining Stars, and any subsequently earned by completing a mission and finding all its secrets, can be assigned after completing each mission.
After the first four missions you play as Mara Jade, who starts with the Learner Jedi rank with 6 Stars, 3 of which have already been assigned:

Once again any remaining Stars can be assigned after completing each mission.
In both cases a Star is automatically assigned to Persuasion on reaching the Charge Jedi rank (15 Stars), although only Mara Jade needs it to complete a mission.
New Republic Base on Altyr 5[edit]

Mara Jade continues to impress me... Now that she's focused her skills and energies on the light side, she promises to become a formidable Jedi.

- Switch Comm Station over to auxiliary power to start jamming Imperial Communications for your escape.
- Bypass the Imperials and make your way to the Lambda Class shuttle.

The shuttle's sensors indicate an atmosphere on the asteroid.
I should be able to land unnoticed in the outlying crevasses and gain entry to the facility from there.

- Gain entry to the Security Check Point in the asteroid caves.
- Identify an auxiliary entrance to the Imperial facility.
- Find a way to disable the auxiliary door from outside of the security perimeter to gain entry into the facility.
- Once inside the Imperial facility, make your way down to the asteroid's core.

I've now been given the monotonous duty of babysitting a transport carrying an important cargo through an undefended sector.

- Find your way to the bridge to repel the boarders.
- Reach the Holocron, in the aft of the ship, before the Pirates.
- Access the Pirate ship through their docking tube at Cargo Bay 3 before they steal all the cargo.

Utilizing stolen gravity well projectors, the pirates managed to pull our ship out of hyperspace and steal the Holocron.
I've managed to stow away on the pirate's frigate. Now if I can just recover the holocron.

- Use the cargo delivery system to reach the crate.
- Create a diversion in an adjacent hangar to access main bay.
- Reach the main hangar bay.
