Containers

Although some containers, including the remains of enemies killed, always have the same inventory, most others have somewhat random inventories which are normally determined upon first entering an area... so if you save game before entering an area and acquire nothing worthwhile afterwards, you can load game to enter and try again.

Many of the best items in the game can only be acquired from containers, so make sure to search areas thoroughly for them and kill all enemies, particularly at higher levels.

Merchants

Some merchants always have the same inventory:

World Location Merchant Buy Sell
Telos Entertainment Dendis Dobo 100% 55%
Nar Shaddaa Refugee Landing Pad Geeda 105% / 100% 50%
Geeda 95%
Droid
World Location Merchant Buy Sell
Dantooine Khoonda Plains Akkere 100% 55%

However, although you can always buy some of the same items from most other merchants, most of their inventories are somewhat random and determined upon first speaking to them:

World Location Merchant Buy Sell
Telos Entertainment Samhan Dobo 100% 55%
Nar Shaddaa Refugee Landing Pad Oondar 100% 55%
Dxun Mandalorian Ruins Kex 100% 45%
Onderon Iziz Spaceport Margar 120% 45%
Merchant Quarter Gegorran 100% 55%
Dantooine Khoonda Adum Larp 100% 55%
Enclave Courtyard Daraala 140%
Droid
World Location Merchant Buy Sell
Telos Residential 082 East Opo Chano 100% 55%
Nar Shaddaa Refugee Landing Pad Kodin 100% 55%
Onderon Western Square 1B-8D 110% / 100% 55%

If you save game before speaking to a merchant and there's nothing worthwhile to buy, you can load game to try again. However, check the Appendices to ensure that there's actually a chance to buy a particular item from a particular merchant, since many of the best items in the game can only be acquired from containers.
