StrategyWiki:Community Portal/Layout suggestions

From StrategyWiki, the video game walkthrough and strategy guide wiki

A new default skin is being developed for the StrategyWiki site. If you have any suggestions for beneficial features, or complaints with the current set up that could be changed, please feel free to comment here.

Suggestions[edit]

  • Implement a min-width
  • Have the navigation stuff on the left side of the page stay stationary (I know they did this with Monobook, but I can't find it anymore :P).
  • What about a most visited page for every user to find the pages that they're working on? It seems a bit wrong adding all of them to your user page.
    • Just add the pages in question to your watchlist, then you can go to them whenever when you click "My Watchlist" on the top. --Ryan SchmidtTalk - Contribs 08:44, 17 May 2007 (CDT)
      • This would have to be changed on MediaWiki itself. You might want to open a bug. -- Prod (Talk) 22:52, 28 August 2007 (CDT)
  • I don't like the dotted line that comes with the third-level headings:

Like this[edit]

I think it would look tidier as just the heading, like on Wikipedia. --RamonSalazar 14:37, 26 February 2007 (CST)

  • add in h3 { border-top: none !important; } to your BlueCloud.css to hid that bar. -- Safety Skizzerz Talk · Contribs · Spel Chek™ · VFG · RTFM 12:28, 28 August 2007 (CDT)
  • Can we have the ammount of views a page has in the new skin (only in monobook at the moment)--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 12:00, 18 March 2007 (CDT)
    • It has been omitted so that the pages don't change after every view so that we can get some performance gains. -- Prod (Talk) 22:23, 24 March 2008 (CDT)
  • A drop down menu with quick navigation to many of the most popular systems. -- Prod (Talk) 17:46, 2 April 2007 (CDT)
    • Not too sure of the benefit anymore, viewable from the front page, or just by searching. -- Prod (Talk) 22:23, 24 March 2008 (CDT)
  • Be print-friendly (implement a printable version of the skin)
  • This is a tiny bit pedantic, but is there any way to include the 'japanese title' parametre on the 'new gamepage' template? Sure, not all video games are made in Japan, but the sheer number of Japanese games put out in the US and EU make it worth less effort to just remove the Japanese title parametre than to constantly have to type it in. Or perhaps I'm just overestimating the number of Japanese games out on the market (well, considering that 2 of the major consoles at the moment are Japanese, it isn't that wild an assumption).--Froglet 08:59, 6 September 2007 (CDT)
    • You can edit it here if you're an admin, I'd bring it up on the community portal before changing it though.--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 11:16, 6 September 2007 (CDT)
      • Probably not going to happen. Many games are released there first, but not all of them. -- Prod (Talk) 22:23, 24 March 2008 (CDT)
  • I don't know if this relates to skinning or something harder, but it would be nice if the talk pages for articles were on the top, with the other tabs, rather than on the side. -- towers   17:39, 7 November 2007 (CST)
    • Yes, that would require skin modifications, plus some others to account for nonexistent discussion pages. -- Safety Skizzerz Talk · Contribs · Spel Chek™ · VFG · RTFM 20:14, 7 November 2007 (CST)
    • That is specific to BlueCloud and is therefore not likely to change (it might). You can always use Monobook if that is what you're used to. -- Prod (Talk) 20:39, 7 November 2007 (CST)
It's what I am used to, due to Wikipedia and other wikis, but I'd like to keep using BlueCloud--it's got a nice charm to it. If there is a CSS mod I can do, just tell me about it and I'll write it myself; I'm not inept at that. As far as I can see, any modification beyond that would just be changing the color of the images used for the tabs up top, and that's even easier. Really, if someone tells me how to move that tab, or at least how to learn to move that tab, I'll set out to do it and share my results with anyone who'd also want what I do. -- towers   20:57, 7 November 2007 (CST)
I am also just assuming that those are images and not even checking to see if they are indeed images. ;D -- towers   21:02, 7 November 2007 (CST)
They're text and it would be a JS change. I'm not too sure how you would move it there, but it's probably similar to one of the things I have in my user js for creating a book search. -- Prod (Talk) 21:54, 7 November 2007 (CST)
DrBob changed the skin to move Unwatch to the toolbox so it's surely fairly straightforward to reverse the process for the talk tab. I'd be all in favour of doing this, as after using Monobook it does indeed look like talk pages are missing until you suddenly notice it there at the side. GarrettTalk 03:32, 8 November 2007 (CST)
Ok... but how are we going to mark nonexistant talk pages. The only feasible option I see (css-wise) would be to color the text. Otherwise we'd have to modify the tab images, and that's a pain (it took me forever to figure out how they worked in the first place for the AutumnLeaf reskin). -- Safety Skizzerz Talk · Contribs · Spel Chek™ · VFG · RTFM 15:58, 8 November 2007 (CST)
I think just using red text or whatever would be alright--if the text was the same color as the background color for non-existant talk pages now, and then turned to red when you hovered over it (basically the same as it is now, just text instead of background) I think it would work fine. It'd still be pretty intuitive, I think. At least more so than it is now. -- towers   16:38, 8 November 2007 (CST)
  • Can you set the DoubleJump banner so that it appears behind the Search box/buttons on narrow width windows? Pelago 18:25, 24 March 2008 (CDT)
