Questions for the candidate

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve StrategyWiki in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with?
A: Mostly cleanup and dealing with vandalism.
2. Of your articles or contributions to StrategyWiki, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A: The Dog's Life guide, since it was the first guide I ever worked on (I still miss writing the walkthrough) and it became a featured guide!
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: A few times I got a bit bugged by najzere over stuff in the Dog Island guide, but other than that, no. Though obviously I have edited at the same time as someone else before resaulting in an edit conflict, but nothing major.
General comments
  • I love animals and most (or perhaps all) of the guides I have written have been on animal games.

Please keep criticism constructive and polite.

Discussion

  • While I haven't always agreed with some of the decisions or edits that Melon has made, Melon has shown two important aspects that are of vital importance to the site; support and dedication. Melon made an attempt at becoming a sysop in the past, and though it was turned down, Melon remained an active member, and showed an effort for learning from previous mistakes. She takes an active role in some sysop functions of the site, including welcoming new users, and cleaning up mistakes, and I think she has earned this nomination. • I do not doubt that Melon will be continued positive influence on StrategyWiki. She has continually grown as a user, been curious as to why we do things and how we do things, and has always asked for clarification when necessary. Every issue she has had has been resolved, and I know other users tend to get along quite well with her. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 22:24, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Melon247 is a good user and her heart is in the right place, as I think she really does like StrategyWiki and works to its benefit. She makes sporadic administrative edits to rollback vandalism, mark pages for deletion and welcome users, but hasn't shown much interest lately in participating in cleanup or discussions on administrative issues. When she does comment, however, she reveals her inexperience and ignorance of some fairly basic knowledge of how the wiki works. This is the main reason for my opposition, as administrators, for better or worse, are the public face of the wiki and I wouldn't like to see her representing us to users when the knowledge and polish just aren't there. Her great guide contributions and intermittent RC patrolling are definitely welcome though, and I hope to see those continue, whatever the outcome of the nomination. — najzereT 15:56, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
As for being the "public face of the wiki", I can't really say a lot about that as I mainly do RC changes. That said, I find most people don't do administrative edits until they become admins. I know I didn't anyway, and I made it to admin. Knowledge of how the wiki actually works comes through experience; you can't expect everyone to know the ins and outs of wiki before they become admin (which is not a requirement as per requests for permissions). --Arrow Windwhistler (talk) 16:51, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
  • I don't think that extensive knowledge of how the wiki works should be required for adminship; dedication is what counts. While Melon has been editing infrequently lately, there is a reason for it: Notice how a) it is September, b) school is back in session, and c) many schools block gaming sites. This would severely limit the time available for her to contribute to StrategyWiki on top of doing all of her homework, extracurricular activities, and the rest of her social life outside of the internet. However, looking at her Summer contributions, she has managed to get a guide to Featured Status, has made numerous mistakes and has subsequently learned from them, and is continuing to show an increase of wiki knowledge in general. Also, not every admin needs to fit into a certain niche -- we need all sorts of people. Some admins like patrolling RecentChanges, others do not. Some admins like making sure new users feel welcome and know where to get help, others may not do that on a frequent basis. Some admins like contributing content, others are too involved in administrative duties to contribute new guides or expand existing ones regularly. Some admins go out and try to increase awareness and form new relationships with other sites, others have no idea what's going on that that regard. Some admins know the wiki software like the back of their hand and could recite why Special:BlankPage was created, others didn't even know that Special:BlankPage existed until they clicked the above link. Some admins have one mindset about doing things, and others may have the opposite view, and still others may introduce alternate methods to give a large scope of options to investigate. So, as you can see, having admins that aren't all the same helps cover everything that needs to be done, and introduces new viewpoints that perhaps were not thought of before. I believe that Melon is fully qualified for adminship, even though she doesn't quite know all of the ropes yet (but hey, that's what SW:RTFM and Google is for!). From past experience, I believe she'll learn quickly and soon figure out her own niche in the admin-ing world. --Skizzerz 17:13, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
