Questions for the candidate

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve StrategyWiki in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with?

A: I anticipate patrolling the Recent Changes and helping new users learn wiki markup. I'm proud to have already introduced several new members to StrategyWiki through the Drift City guide and my mission to help 100 level 0 guides become level 1 or higher. I'm hoping to do the same with other guides very shortly. The Drift City guide is healthy enough that it should reach level 4 with the other contributors' continued help without as much of my attention placed towards it, and I'm looking for new level 0 guides even now to bring to level 1.

2. Of your articles or contributions to StrategyWiki, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?

A: I'm very pleased with my contributions to the Drift City guide, both content-wise, and behind the scenes. A program I have set up with my crew on Drift City gives the members incentive to contribute to the guide, and it has been very successful: about 90% of content edits to the guide have been made by members of my crew. With this collaboration, the Drift City guide on StrategyWiki has become the most comprehensive guide for the game anywhere, and the wiki format works perfectly with the ever-changing gameplay of an MMORPG like Drift City.

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?

A: I have been in no conflicts with any StrategyWiki users. The whole lot at StrategyWiki are generally very mature and friendly, and I'm pleased to be among them.

General comments

• I make a lot of personal goals for myself that turn into tested and working solutions to problems that StrategyWiki faces. The freedom to execute ideas for myself is a great aspect of StrategyWiki for me.
• I encourage people that have never heard of StrategyWiki before to contribute to the guide with an unexpectedly high success rate. In the Drift City guide alone, not including talk pages, 9 users have made their first edit to the guide thanks to my encouraging people to contribute, one person has made a Youtube video for the leveling guide, and one person has given StrategyWiki permission to host his Mittron Enhancer guide, a major supplement to the guide. In addition to the existing users that have helped contribute to the guide, that is a very healthy number of users collaborating on a single guide.
• I wasn't expecting to be nominated this early, but I was going to nominate myself after I completed my goal of bringing 100 level 0 guides to level 1 anyway, so seeing that someone else already thinks I'm worthy of being nominated tells me that I've been doing a good job at it so far. When I take a look at what I've done so far, I'm inclined to agree with the nominator that I've accomplished quite a bit already.

Discussion

• Tathar is pretty knowledgeable about the wiki markup language and for the most part can keep a level head under pressure. Also, there is not a single day that I log onto IRC to find Tathar not there as well. • I'm not so sure. Tathar hasn't contributed to many guides apart from the one or two he works (hard) on, and so I can't see much evidence for the breadth of experience required to be a sysop. Hanging out on IRC is good, but I don't think that should be a major decider in who becomes a sysop. I'm sure that if he keeps up his edits, contributes more to general wiki maintenance and complains about abxy staff a little less, then I could support his adminship, but I don't think that time has come yet. --DrBob (talk) 19:22, 24 December 2007 (CST)
  • Just FYI, he complains about the abxy staff because he was banned from their ranks for an enormous multitude of reasons. None of us like him. If you think he is ready for adminship here, then go for it: this is not abxy, I understand. However, be warned: he's a constant irritant. He can be childish, immature, stupid, and all sorts of other things I blocked from my memory. As a flagbearer of sorts for the abxy staff, I feel I have to warn you all against Tathar for all of us. He's a good guy at heart, but I don't think it ever really comes through. Sorry, Tathar. -- towers 03:38, 26 December 2007 (CST)
• I've collaborated with Tathar on two guides so far, and as of yet I haven't seen the "bad side" to him (perhaps it's like how I was when I first joined SW, ya know, almost getting banned and such). I support his nomination knowing how active he is, and how much he will help with the site. I DO NOT support his nomination in regards to any ABXY conflicts, and I agree with DB on one hand, but would rather see another person help with patrolling edits. --Notmyhandle (talk • contribs) 07:16, 6 January 2008 (CST)
• Let us remember that this is not ABXY and try to focus on his behavior and contributions here. It may be because I normally can’t get onto IRC, but I personally haven’t seen enough of his work to make an educated opinion. If he has been banned as one of their staff then Tathar understands what will happen if he acts out as an admin here. His goal of fleshing out 0 level guides and dedication to the Drift City guide is admirable. This decision belongs to those who know him better than me. --Zaiqukaj 09:45, 6 January 2008 (CST)
• I withdrew my support because I have realized that indeed the only thing lacking on Tathar's part is a desire or effort to help with maintenance - he has only helped with ODJ, Drift City, and GoonZu Online (all games he has played). I would like to see efforts on his part that reflect the jobs he would responsible to help with as a sysop before he becomes one. His contributions to discussions are great, his participation overall is exemplary, and he would probably make a good addition to the team (especially since we all know him fairly well through IRC). I see no problem in waiting longer as he has done nothing outside of his interests to merit the privileges we would give to him. If maintenance isn't his thing, fine, I enjoy having him around SW because of his contributions, advertising, and effort towards teamwork; but if he doesn't want to do the things, then why give him powers? Deletions, banning, and access to protected pages are the main things he will be allowed to do - these things are only of relative importance to his other jobs that he can already attend to.
