Welcome to all users! This page is where you can ask StrategyWiki-related questions to the staff and senior community figures, and they will do their best to answer. If you want to raise a topic for discussion (rather than just ask about it), please use the community issues forum instead. New issues are entered here, with the most recent at the bottom of the page. If your question does not pertain to editing StrategyWiki (e.g. asking for hints or game-specific information), please ask on the guide's talk page or on the forums.

Please review the Table of Contents to see if your issue has already been raised; also check the archives (to the right) in case it was discussed some time ago.

To facilitate ease of browsing and replying, please:

  1. Place your question at the bottom of the list.
  2. Title the question (by placing the title between equals signs: ==Title==).
  3. Sign your name and date (by adding four tildes: ~~~~).

How do I go to the forbidden tunnel on the avatar level in spy room dawn of dragons

I finished the level and then decided not to go forth to dragons city but to go back and get things I missed and now I have no idea how to find the entrance to the forbidden tunnel.

Are you talking about this Spyro guide? -- Prod (talk) 15:02, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

The Welcome to StrategyWiki notice won't go away even if I mark it read.

When I mark it read, it goes away, but if I reload the page or go to a new page, it's back. Super annoying. Not sure if here's where to report that. Alaharon123 (talk) 18:27, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

The Quest (1983)

The game contains the following riddle, and I am struggling to solve it. Google has no answer, either. Any suggestions?

Blue as the sky on a summer day,
Fresh as a field of just cut hay,
Deep as the pits beneath the fires of hell,
Clear as a note from a pure silver bell,
Still as a graveyard on a cold winter night,
Ruthless as a hawk in its death dealing flight,
As peaceful as a river that flows gently by,
The question to answer is: "What am I?"

WRONG ANSWERS (so far): water, lake, sea, ocean, lagoon, river, ice, sadness. Abacos (talk) 10:58, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

A well? -- Prod (talk) 13:07, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
No. After "well", I also tried wellspring, spring, source, abyss, rain. The sphinx says they are all wrong. Maybe the answer is unrelated to water? Abacos (talk) 14:51, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
Try SPHINX? -- Prod (talk) 18:13, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
I thought: "He is kidding, the sphinx is not blue nor fresh, and what it says is the very opposite of clear!". I tried and... it worked! This is real "thinking out of the box"! Thanks :) --Abacos (talk) 15:40, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
It makes perfect sense if you think about how Oedipus first encountered the sphinx. No matter which version of the riddle he encountered, it ends in the same typically way: "What am I?" EndymionMallorn (talk) 03:28, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Xevious Arrangement images

As a result of missing some of the Sols and Zos in this game (which I feared I would), I have had to move some of the images around; after several screw-ups while attempting to correct the numbering in the descriptions (which I know I will also have to do for the affected areas' pages), I must say that the unnecessary redirects "File:NCV1-XEV Area 10.png", "File:NCV1-XEV Area 13B.png" and "File:NCV1-XEV Area 14C.png" have been marked for deletion (as I have requested that the images "File:NCV1-XEV Area 13A.png" and "File:NCV1-XEV Area 14B.png" should get renamed to the second and third of those titles respectively, in order to make way for images of the Sols that I missed). Namcorules (talk) 11:00, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Done. :) Let me know if I did anything wrong. --WarioTalk 20:16, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Dynamite Düx image

I have requested that the image "DD Mortar Wolf.gif" be renamed to "DD Mortar Coyote.gif" (I tried to move it myself yesterday, but the site did not let me, possibly because non-administrators do not have the ability to move pages in namespace of "File" any more); this is because when I created the guide in 2016, I initially obviously thought those enemies were wolves, but according to Hardcore Gaming 101's page for the game, they are coyotes. I have also changed the image's name in the guide's Getting Started page in preparation for this requested move, along with all mentions of the enemies in question on the individual stage pages, so the moving administrator does not have to do it for me. Namcorules (talk) 12:12, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Done. -- Prod (talk) 16:18, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Header Nav's swsquaread vs floatingtoc

Since swsquaread had been added to {{Header Nav}}, should {{floatingtoc}} be changed to float left by default? At present, if it floats right then the placement of the ad on the right can move it almost to the center of the page, and if it's longer than the ad then it creates empty space beneath the ad rather than have any text wrap around to fill that space.

Additionally, floatingtoc has been used on over 2,000 pages, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's done so to use the previously empty space beside it, particularly when it's long, not just for text but also for tables and images (maps): the addition of swsquaread will have affected the layout at the top of many of those pages. Onderduiker (talk) 00:23, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm tempted to blank the template so it doesn't actually do anything. There's always the possibility the ad gets moved elsewhere in the next version of the skin and the template becomes useful again. -- Prod (talk) 01:27, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Floatingtoc is still useful, since nothing can normally be placed beside a standard ToC and some, like on KotORII's Feats page, are so long that even with the new ad there's still plenty of empty space that could be used with a floatingtoc, regardless of whether it's on the left or right (although there'd be more useable space if it were on the left).
I'm planning to upload maps for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (and later its sequel) with numbers corresponding to ToC entries, instead of text labels like those currently on the map for the Command Module. {{KotOR/Header}} uses a floatingtoc so that it's alongside the map (or screenshot), like a key or legend: I've already reduced the image size to accomodate the ad, and since I use a guide-specific template, I could update it if you blanked floatingtoc (and possibly add introductory paragraphs and summary tables to fill the space beside the ad so that I could enlarge the image again alongside the floating ToC below)... but I'd be surprised if I'm the only one who's used floatingtoc in this way.
If the ad is necessary, then I'd suggest trying to move it to the sidebar on the left (perhaps above or below Tools?). If it stays where it is then I can work around it: it's not as bad as Wikia, where those ads have massive columns of empty space beneath them, for the entire page length. Onderduiker (talk) 20:19, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the left sidebar isn't wide enough, and making it wider would take up useful space from the content. Most likely, we'll keep it this way for some time, until the next skin refresh (whenever that happens). That is a good point about the floating toc, I guess it'll just be a matter of seeing where it's use becomes inappropriate. My concern for the very long tocs is that they block a huge column of space below the ad. -- Prod (talk) 21:41, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

List of "{{" references?

I acknowledge that I may well be missing something, but I've been looking at things, and I don't see a standardized list of things I can reference in curled brackets - things like Cross button, Xand the like. Where can I find an easy reference for all of these? EndymionMallorn (talk) 03:33, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Things in curly braces refer to templates. So for anything using the {{psx|?}} template, simply visit Template:Psx. Procyon 03:42, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! Is there a simple-ish list of every template available? EndymionMallorn (talk) 04:12, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
You're probably looking for this: Category:Templates Procyon 04:25, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Image in the list of Uncategorized Files, but has Categories

This file: SM64 Bob-omb.png (SM64_Bob-omb.png)
Shows up on this page: Special:UncategorizedFiles
And yet it has the appropriate categories listed. I'm not sure exactly what the fix is here, could someone take a look? EndymionMallorn (talk) 11:51, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

I purged cache, and that seems to have fixed the problem. -- Prod (talk) 16:49, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Most popular and most wanted

These two lists apeear on the main page, but their meaning is explained nowhere in Strategywiki. I suppose they could be "most visited" and/or "most edited", and even if that is the case, which is which? I asked to some search engine websites (DuckDuckGo, Google), but they are no help, either.

I am asking it just for the pleasure to know. Thanks in advance for any answer :) --Abacos (talk) 13:43, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Most popular is the guide with the most page views. It's based on the DPL query. Most wanted is the guide that most people have hit the "edit" links in for the week. It's supposed to be updated by my bot, but it hasn't been run in some time. -- Prod (talk) 16:37, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Games with an updated version

I never thought about this, but I suppose it would be wise to ask. I am currently working on setting up pages for the Senran Kagura series, and am confused about what to do with the first game in the series, Shoujotachi no Shinei (Portrait of Girls, as it is literally translated). It never crossed my mind, but Senran Kagura Burst is the updated re-release of the game that added a story for Homura and the then-Hebijo girls on top of the main story from Portrait of Girls. I don't know whether to count both of them as separate games, but combine them into a singular Table of Contents or if I should scrap the page for Shoujotachi no Shinei and just do Burst. - JeffMandM (talk) 17:17, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

It's kind of up to you how you'd like to proceed. Making two separate guides when most of the content is identical isn't very ideal. You can see how we dealt with stuff like this in the Dragon Warrior III guide, or the Super Mario Bros. 2 guide, which had to take Super Mario Advance into account. Or you can treat it like an expansion pack, similar to how we structured the Diablo guide. You have a couple of choices, just look around the site to see how other games tackled the problem, and choose the approach that seems most suitable to you. Procyon 01:38, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

I don't have permission to create a new page, e.g. edit a new page

As the guidelines say I should have the right to edit and create a new page. But on the page - please see my history - is no edit button and a text calls my attention that I do not have permission to edit. What is the problem? 2.205.170.50 21:24, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

I'm not sure if we've opened up the permissions to allow anonymous users to create new pages, although I don't recall if we actually choose to restrict it. It might help if you just create a new account. They're completely anonymous, and only help to identify who submitted what work. If gone ahead and started History Line: 1914-1918/Artifical Intelligence for you. Just submit the new content between the Header and Footer Navs. Procyon 22:13, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
Danke. Thank you. I will fill it tomorrow. 2.205.170.50 23:04, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
Editing is open to all anonymous users, but creating new pages is restricted until users have a few good edits. -- Prod (talk) 00:58, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

{{ToC}} injecting an extra blank paragraph

Hey all, check out this formatting bug I found. It is adding a blank <p><br></p> which adds almost an inch of white space to the main page of a guide. Any ideas of why it is there or how to fix it? It is not part of the ToC template itself, and I'm not aware of a way for CSS to inject it, so there must be a wiki backend code adding it?

--Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 20:20, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

This generally happens when the ToC is transcluded, or are you seeing it on every page? -- Prod (talk) 20:32, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
It appears inconsistent. Examples I am comparing: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (the empty paragraph is injected here) versus Mega Man X (no extra paragraph). --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 01:35, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Also, while comparing it is clear that there is a bunch of extra white space we could kill by minimizing the bottom margin of <h2 id="editToC"> to between -0.5em to 0em (my vote is for -0.5em, though 0em may guarantee better viewing compatibility overall). The example code I am suggesting as a fix is:
.mw-body h2 {
    margin: 2em 0 1em;
    margin-bottom: -0.5em;
}

On ALttP, there's the featured template at the top, perhaps that's causing problems? -- Prod (talk) 01:40, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Good eye, I am investigating that. Another suggestion: move the featured icons down a bit because they get discolored from the top navigation fade in. I am suggesting a margin-top:0.25em and margin-right:0.25em. This would be for div id="#mw-indicator-featured". --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 03:42, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
I tracked down some help documentation. This help page says OutputPage.php contains the setIndicators() function. More pertinent, this page lays out the output of setIndicators, with no mention of a paragraph. Only the icon's div at the top right. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 04:05, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Ok so the main oddity is that the ToC itself does not have the <p><br></p> present. So that means it is being added on the main LTTP page from another mechanism (or as you said at the start, most likely from transclusion). I assume this is a well known bug, but can't find a report for it. To overcome this, I simply hardcoded the table of contents by replacing {{ToC}} with:
{{-}}
==Table of Contents==
{{:{{FULLPAGENAME}}/Table of Contents}}
{{-}}

--Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 04:34, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

That's actually why I put the featured template on the same line as the noinclude. By having it on a separate line it adds an extra line break which is interpreted as a new paragraph. -- Prod (talk) 04:53, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Oh sorry, I didn't see your edit there! However, over the past 3 revisions I don't think any of the changes affected the bug (my apologies if it did, I can't see the effect of the transclusion now, I was working with you revision for a time and didn't see it fixed). I went back to revert my change in a 4th, unique way (putting featured to the left of the noinclude, same line) and now it works! I fixed the main page and all is well on our wiki for now. I am going to report this as a bug. I have reproduced this situation on the latest version of MW at test2.wikipedia.org here. I tested the four locations of featured in relation to the noinclude. They are: 1, 2, 3, 4. Interestingly, in situation 1-3, on the test wiki the problem was only apparent on the Table of Contents page itself (see the <swsquaread /> code near the header nav), but situation 4 also pushed it through the transclusion to the article page itself. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 05:37, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
If you view User:Notmyhandle/Article] you can see a live example of both the broken and fixed situations. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 05:25, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
