Dark And Light[edit]

I was planning to do this using my bot once I'd finished writing the next version (lots of cool new features :-D ), but as you've done it it looks like I won't have to. :-P I'd leave the redirect pages, as they're too much work to get rid of, and aren't causing any harm. Once I've got the next version of my bot finished, I might make it look for pointless redirects and delete them. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 10:03, 25 July 2006 (CDT)

Ah, I didn't realize you were going to have a bot do it :). Guess I just saved you a little bit of trouble then. Oh well, didn't hurt me any to do it.--DukeRuckley 10:20, 25 July 2006 (CDT)

GFDL Articles Template[edit]

I've deleted all cases of it being included in an article. It's page is still linked by two StrategyWiki pages so I'm not sure what to do about deleting it. Chaote Imagicka

It doesn't matter. The links will now be red, and that's fine. I've deleted the template; thanks again for the time you've put into it. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 16:30, 28 August 2006 (CDT)

How to Merge histories[edit]

What are the steps needed to merge histories? -- Prod (Talk) 10:23, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

Explained on Wikipedia. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 10:35, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

Merging the "new new FFI book"[edit]

I've been looking over the FFI pages, and I don't really see a lot of things that need to be merged. Most of the entries either contain information already in the guide, or are too encyclopedic for our purposes (example). These entries would be better off at the Final Fantasy Wiki. The list of characters that can equip the stuff would be useful, and I intend to put such information in, however it would talk longer to pull the info from each page, figure out the corresponding item, reformat it, than it would to just get the information from the game disc. As such, it might be easiest for us if these types of pages were just deleted without merging. The Locations and Status Effects pages are great since those sections need to be added to Final Fantasy/Walkthrough. I'll go through them all this week when I have time and figure out which pages need to be added into the Final Fantasy strategy guide.

That said, for the information that is useful for our purposes of a strategy guide, is merging these something I can do by cutting and pasting, or something an admin needs to do? Koweja 16:27, 3 December 2006 (CST)

Renaming FF2 images[edit]

Is it possible to have a bot do this, or will we have to do this ourselves? It would involve downloading each picture and then re-uploading them all with the correct name and categories. Then we would have to go through and rename all of the images in the FF4 guide. So if there is any way to make this less tedious, that would be awesome. Otherwise I'll get started on it sometime in the near future.--DukeRuckley 11:51, 28 March 2007 (CDT)

My bot's MIA at the moment, but assuming all the images to be renamed are in a single category (which, from memory, I think they are), it should be perfectly possible for a bot to do this. --DrBob (Talk) 12:07, 28 March 2007 (CDT)
I believe they are. In that case, I'll just leave it alone.--DukeRuckley 12:09, 28 March 2007 (CDT)
I'm going to start this task today, I'll be done in about 2 days.--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 06:35, 10 April 2007 (CDT)
Can you have a bot do the.png's if there are and , IE6 can't cope with them.--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 06:36, 10 April 2007 (CDT)
I'm doing the pics in page order so I don't mess up anything, I think the first ones I did were spirits and they're done now.--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 06:53, 10 April 2007 (CDT)
Note that File:FF2 Meteo.jpg wasn't there to begin with.--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 07:59, 10 April 2007 (CDT)
I'm Done Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 12:14, 10 April 2007 (CDT)
Excellent! :-D --DrBob (Talk) 12:58, 10 April 2007 (CDT)

Images Needing Renaming[edit]

I've done this now, can a few people help me mark the unmarked images in the file list with rename so I know where they all are so can rename them as well, (A few links are in my to do section). At the moment I haven't got my FireFox PC out so I can't do the .png's but I'll start renaming my marked images now (any help with finding wrongly named images wll be greatly appreciated). Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 15:06, 23 April 2007 (CDT)

Transparency[edit]

Does anyone think that it'd be a good idea to have a category for pictures that need transparency, after a lot of the work I've done renaming, there were quite a few that should have transparency, does anyone think that this is a good idea?Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 10:52, 3 May 2007 (CDT)

I actually think that's a really great idea. However, the task should not be taken on by people who are going to do a crappy job (i.e. messy looking borders). --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 16:52, 3 May 2007 (CDT)
What do you mean messy looking boarders, can you show me an example because I was thinking about just adding transparency without any borders (e.g on something like this image, it's not transparent in firefox or IE). I'm happy to add boarders though. Anyway people on this project don't do a crappy job (I hope :P)--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 14:23, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
How are you going to add transparency? Erase the stuff around the dragonfly? What I'm saying is that when you do this and if you're not careful the edges of the object appear choppy. I can't find an example on SW right now; most of the images we submit are high quality, so I'm not really worried about any of the guys who have put their names on the cleanup page messing up on this task. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 16:34, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
I've just got a new program and that can do it really well, the template that I'm going to start is here, tell me what you think, if it's OK then let me create the template so I can protect it. P.S I'll upload my test of the image here, it took me approx 20 seconds to do this but is only transparent in FireFox or IE7 cuz IE6 can't cut it.Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 16:53, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
Looking at it, it may not be perfect but in reality I'd spend some time doing that.Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 16:55, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
It actually came out quite well for such a short amount of time spent. What progam? I'm interested. By the way, the transparency template is fine except for Image:Transparent_Icon.jpg which doesn't seem to use transparency... haha. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 19:00, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
No, I didn't put transparency on it so ppl in IE6 can see it, I was thinking about them because it'd look exactly the same to them, also the PNG I got was around 900kb and jpgs cant' take transparency (I think). Anyway, the template'll be Transparency--Rocky   (Talk - Contributions) 01:10, 6 May 2007 (CDT)

Specific task: .hack game name fixes - what?[edit]

So Prod, what needs to be done? Are the current titles incorrect or... what do you mean by "fix all game names"? --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 22:42, 29 July 2008 (CDT)

The category lists different names than some of the guides that have been created. It needs to be figured out which is the "official" name. -- Prod (Talk) 00:08, 30 July 2008 (CDT)
The official box arts would be the way to find out. RobJ1981 00:13, 30 July 2008 (CDT)
I usually go by the way they're written up on the official websites. The boxarts tend to be more "artistic" and use line breaks in the titles, which we can't replicate. -- Prod (Talk) 00:19, 30 July 2008 (CDT)

Collaboration?[edit]

I brought up at the COTM page that we may be able to have our own collaboration here for behind the scenes cleanup. Specifically, this collaboration can be used to eliminate wanted categories, cleanup more difficult pages, go on an image categorization rampage, etc. There's an endless amount of cleanup we can do and it doesn't necessarily have to be monthly (I was thinking we could vary it based on the job, like creating categories would be for two weeks while fleshing out series pages with content could be a full month or more). Any thoughts?--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 21:56, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I'm down for anything that gets more cleanup done. - najzere 16:00, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
I somehow missed when this section was created D: This sounds great. I was planning on getting most of the spelling things done once it became 09. We could also start up projects focusing on one task whenever a specific task really stock piles work to be done. If making stubs is ok I bet I could get the lion's share of the wanted categories made (and dump in anything I can find in Wikipedia). Category pages are so helpful with navigating and finding things that them starting as empty-ish stubs sounds alright if I can't find anything.--Zaiqukaj 12:50, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia template wonkyness[edit]

The location of

Wikipedia

has been adding awkward white spaces to a lot of guide pages. An example of this in action is on the Donkey Kong page. I'm bad at tinkering with templates so I'm posting this here. Should we fix the way the template works or relocate the standard location of the tag on each page that uses it? --Zaiqukaj 12:50, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't see the whitespace issue. Can you screenshot it? - najzere 19:10, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
It's an internet explorer issue. The easiest way to fix it is to put the wikipedia just above the ToC. -- Prod (Talk) 19:19, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Category Misspellings page[edit]

I had an idea to have a page with misspellings of categories (such as Screnshots) and then PAGESINCATEGORY tags after them to see if there's any pages with that misspelling on them. I guess it would work in a similar way to the misspellings page. We could also have categories on there like GameCube, as the category is Category:Nintendo GameCube. --Melon247   (talk · contribs · comp) 18:13, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

How about you start a page in your userspace, and we can move it over to the Cleanup Project if we find that its useful. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 20:15, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
I created a user subpage (User:Melon247/Category Misspellings), although it doesn't have many misspellings in it yet. There's one problem I see and it's that with so many red links, if a vandal comes to that page they might go onto the categories and start putting random stuff in. As the pages are misspellings and not going to be created, maybe they should be protected for now so only sysops can create them? (or is that a little over the top) --Melon247   (talk · contribs · comp) 08:54, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
I love this idea Melon. A lot of the game genres have different names for the same thing. This could help with that too. I'm not too sure if blocking blatantly incorrect pages is over the top or not. However, since they should only have red links on the page you made they will have very little visibility. If vandalized less people would stumble upon it vs. if the same damage was caused to a red link in a random ToC. --Zaiqukaj 09:19, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Moved this to StrategyWiki:Cleanup project/Category misspellings. - najzereT 15:48, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Cleanup / game guide[edit]

From Prod: Shouldn't look like a game guide and get categorized along with them.

The Header/Footer navs and ToC style were employed because we don't really have another way set up to deal nicely with sub-pages. The main project page needed splitting up anyway, but even without it, we still had the misspelling pages, the misspelling log and the more recent instructions page I had made. This organization method was modeled after various other multi-page topics in the StrategyWiki namespace, such as StrategyWiki:Guide, StrategyWiki:Featured guides and StrategyWiki:Requests for permissions. As for the project being categorized with game guides, I took out the completion stage from the front page, although the only category it was ever in was for guide completion, never any game categories. — najzereT 17:34, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Make a new header nav for projects/official pages that doesn't categorize it as a game. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 18:02, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
The Header Nav already doesn't categorize it as a game. The page either gets categorized in a completion stage category if you use the num parameter, or as a sub-page if you don't. Considering those two options, the completion stage category seems more appropriate, as the front page is obviously not a sub-page, but at least no one looks in sub-pages, so it's probably just as well there. A new non-game navigation template for official pages would solve the category and appearance problem, and I think it could be made a good deal simpler than the Header/Footer Navs we use on guide pages. — najzereT 18:27, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
Right right, I meant categorized under a completion stage. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 19:07, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
Except for the StrategyWiki Guide, I don't think any of these should use the same layout style as the game guides do. They should be fine just having a list of subpages on the front. -- Prod (Talk) 20:38, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

redrawing the controller buttons in SVG?[edit]

I think the controller button icons should be redrawn in SVG format. There are two good reasons for doing this:

 1. Bitmap images do not scale well, especially when magnified. If you try to blow up a bitmap image, it would look very ugly.
 2. Vector images usually require a smaller file size than bitmap ones. This should reduce the server load.

What do you all think? --71.139.24.217 19:17, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

We don't ever use blown up images of controller buttons, so the main advantage of SVG images is moot. Likewise, file sizes are immaterial at this level, as they're already only at around 1–2 Kb. There are plenty of other images that would benefit from being converted to SVG though, but unfortunately SVGs have been borked on here for quite a while now and it doesn't seem that anyone cares to fix it. — najzereT 19:27, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Empty pages[edit]

Is there a way to search for empty (or very nearly empty) pages? I happened to come across [1] (now deleted), which existed as a page but was empty, and wondered if there were other pages like that. --Pelago 00:05, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Special:ShortPages, but it also finds pages that are constructed from templates rather than having content. --Sigma 7 00:12, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, although as you say it is limited. It also doesn't appear to show empty/short Talk pages, at least not in the first 3000. --Pelago 17:21, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
