Gen is one of the Chinese opponents in the original Street Fighter. He is first introduced as a selectable character in Street Fighter Alpha 2. Gen is the only Street Fighter character that can change fighting styles in mid fight. He is known for his quote in English, spoken to a defeated opponent: "You are a big fool!" Incidentally, Gen says this before his final battle against M. Bison in Alpha 3.

Gen was a friend of Chun-Li's father, and he briefly trained her in her youth. Gen's assassination style incorporates many Kung Fu styles, such as Mantis, Crane, Bear, and Tiger. Gen also owned a restaurant called Genhanten (which is used as one of the background in Pocket Fighter). A lot of signs can be seen in the background of Gen's stage in the original Street Fighter. Some of the signs include Southeast Asia Money Exchanger, Siu Wah Bargain (Bargain is misspelled as "Bargagain") Palace, Gou Norman French Cuisine, etc., which hints that his stage is in Hong Kong.

Gen entered the first World Warrior tournament to find worthy opponents. When he did not, he went back to the streets of China. Later, he found that he was dying from leukemia. Unwilling to go out on his back, he went out and fought members of Shadoloo, hoping to find a worthy foe to fight to the death, but he could not. When he heard of Akuma, he sought him out. When Akuma grabbed him with the Shun Goku Satsu, Gen emptied his heart and mind, and thus the fatal attack failed to kill him. When Gen struck Akuma with his Zan'ei shadow fist, Akuma was unaffected. As they battled, Akuma realized that Gen was ill, and broke off the fight.

Insulted, Gen pursued Akuma until they fought for the final time, to the death. When Gen and Akuma fight in Street Fighter Alpha 3, they perform their signature moves on each other before the fight begins, re-enacting the fight described above. At some point, Gen trained Yang and Yun Lee, the nephews of his friend Lee.

Techniques[edit]

Name Description
Ansatsu Ken Gen is able to switch between two fighting styles, the Sou-ryuu style and the Ki-ryuu style. This makes him a very versatile character. The Sou-ryuu style, or Mantis style, focuses more on precise and quick attacks that strike the opponent's weakpoints while the Ki-ryuu style, or Crane style, focuses on balance, evasion and grace.
Hyakurenkou Practitioners of the Sou-ryuu style are famous for their extremely quick attacks. Gen takes this up a notch. After years of training, he is able to strike so swiftly at once that his hands appear as a blur to opponents.
Gekirou Gen also rigorously trained his kicks. He is able to perform a jump kick, and if it connects, he can choose to kick a few more times while staying in the air.
Zan'ei Gen holds his hand up in a claw-like position and rushes forward, aiming his hand at the opponent's abdomen. If he connects with the opponent, he will move right past them so fast that the opponent can only feel the effects of the attack some time afterwards. This attack is one of Gen's signature assassination techniques. It targets the opponent's vital organs, and can mortally wound an opponent.
Shitenshuu Gen performs a Hyakurentou aim at his opponents various weak spots. The opponent initially doesn't few anything, but after a few seconds the opponent will feel a sudden burst of pain as his wounds instantly worsen. One of the weak points hit is the brain, and when the burst hits, the opponent is knocked dizzy, making him very vulnerable for further attacks.
Jyasen Gen rolls quickly along the ground, evading higher hitting attacks during this state as well as damaging the opponent with his inertia. He then makes a sudden strike with his hand.
Ouga Gen has developed a technique that allows him to evade and confuse his opponents. By using his agility, he jumps onto a wall, which then he can decide to do a flying kick or varying distances or feint the move by simply jumping off. He takes this further up a notch by jumping to the ceiling. From there, he can push himself from the ceiling to stomp an opponent straight below him, do a drop kick in two different directions or just jump from the ceiling without attacking.
Kyoutetsu/Onkyou Gen can mimic the movement of a crane's wings and does a ranged and strong swipe with his arm.
Kirou Gen holds his elbow up and quickly strikes the opponent with his fingers. This attack has more range then his finger strike shile in Mantis style.
Satsujin Gen does a slightly longer crouching kick.
Saizu Gen's medium kick can hit behind him as well as in front, letting him switch sides with his opponent while attacking him.
Uken Gen can do two roundhouse kicks while fighting in the air, and the kicks can combo into themselves.
Kouga Gen leaps to the closest wall and proceeds to do several Ouga kicks at the opponent. While the opponent can move freely and strike back during the move, Gen's erratic angles in his kicks makes it difficult for the opponent to evade them.
Jakouha Gen springs upwards in an attempt to grab an opponent attacking from the air. I fhe succeeds, he will slam the opponent to the ground. Before the opponent can recover, he stomps on their face multiple times, keeping them down.
