Super Mario World is a platform game where you play as Mario or Luigi exploring the levels of Dinosaur Land on your quest to defeat Bowser. In single-player games, you play as Mario. In two-player games, the first player must use Mario, while the second player must use Luigi.

There are no gameplay differences between the Mario and Luigi. Both characters run at the same speed, jump the same height, and so forth. In the original version of Super Mario World the two are also identical in appearance except that Mario wears a red shirt and Luigi wears a green shirt. However, in the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World version Luigi is slightly taller than Mario and performs a few actions differently, such as jumping headfirst rather than with his fist, but the two are still identical in terms of gameplay. In the GBA remake however, Luigi's jump stays in the air longer due to his midair scuttling, and his fireballs bounce higher at the cost of lowered traction.

Status[edit]

When Mario begins the game, he starts as Small Mario. A single hit will kill him. He can use the Spin Jump but cannot break yellow bricks. His small size allows him to access areas that are otherwise more difficult to access.

By collecting a Mushroom, Fire Flower, or Feather, Mario will transform into Super Mario, Fire Mario, or Cape Mario respectively. Collecting another powerup will place one in storage at the top of the screen. An item that goes into storage will replace whatever item was there previously. As Super Mario, collecting any powerup will place a Mushroom in storage, and transform him to match his newly collected item. As Fire or Cape Mario, collecting a Mushroom will place the Mushroom directly in storage. Collecting a Fire Flower or Cape will put his current item in storage, and transform to match his newly collected item. For example, if Fire Mario collects a Feather, he will place a Fire Flower in storage and become Cape Mario. You can press Select Button to have the item drop from storage to switch your current status.

Super Mario Advance 2
Getting hit as Fire Mario or Cape Mario will transform Mario back to Super Mario.

As Super Mario, Fire Mario, or Cape Mario, if you are hit you will return to Small Mario and the item in storage will come floating down allowing Mario to grab it. If Mario dies while having an item in storage, the item in storage will remain when he restarts, though a continue needs to be used.

It is possible to beat the game using only Small Mario. 91 of the 96 exits can be reached using only Small Mario. The exceptions are:

Super Mario[edit]

When Mario is large, but without a Cape Feather or Fire Flower, he is called Super Mario. Small Mario will become Super Mario if he crosses a midway tape.

Super Mario can break yellow blocks using his Spin jump.

Fire Mario[edit]

Just like Super Mario, Fire Mario can break yellow blocks using spin jump. He can also shoot bouncing fireballs. However, no more than two fireballs can be on the screen at once. If Fire Mario spin jumps (A Button), he will release fireballs, one fireball to the left and one to the right. Fireballs can kill certain enemies, such as the Jumpin' Piranha Plants, that cannot be killed by jumping on them. Enemies killed by fireballs, except Koopa Kids, turn into coins.

Cape Mario[edit]

The Cape is first available in Donut Plains 1.

Just like Super Mario, Cape Mario can break yellow blocks using spin jump. As Cape Mario, he can run and jump to start flying for a short distance. After flying up, he can glide for a longer distance by holding his cape like a parachute. Alternatively, he can smash down to the ground creating an earthquake which kills certain enemies. When jumping, Cape Mario can glide slowly to the ground allowing him to jump further. Using a Cape Spin, Mario can kill certain enemies, such as the Jumpin' Piranha Plants, that cannot be killed by jumping on them. He can also use the Cape Spin to flip yellow blocks.

If Cape Mario runs into an enemy while flying his flight will be interrupted, causing him to gain temporary invincibility and spin in the air like a spin jump.

Yoshi[edit]

SMW Yoshi.png

Yoshi is the friendly dinosaur that helps Mario and Luigi through Dinosaur Island by allowing them to ride on his back. If Mario hits certain ? Blocks Yoshi will pop out. If Mario has Yoshi already, the block will contain a 1-Up Mushroom instead. Yoshi cannot enter Ghost Houses or Castles. He will wait outside while Mario completes the level. While outside Yoshi cannot be lost even if Mario gets hit or dies.

If Mario is hit while riding Yoshi, Mario will not die or shrink, but Yoshi will try run away. Mario can recover Yoshi by jumping on him. Fire Mario cannot shoot fireballs while riding Yoshi. Cape Mario cannot do Cape Spin while riding Yoshi, though he can still fly for a short period of time and glide after jumps. Mario cannot cannot climb ropes, vines or fences while riding Yoshi. Mario with Yoshi is larger than Super Mario. This makes it difficult or impossible to reach certain areas and easier to be hit or squished.

Yoshi's jump is as powerful as Mario's spin jump. Yoshi can break yellow bricks if a large Mario (Super Mario, Cape Mario or Fire Mario) spin jumps and lands on Yoshi while Yoshi is standing on yellow bricks. Mario and Yoshi can perform a double jump, allowing Mario to jump almost twice as high.

Yoshi can shoot out his tongue to grab and eat enemies and items. Some enemies that can't be killed with a jump, such as Mega Mole, can still be eaten. While most enemies will be swallowed immediately, Yoshi will hold some enemies or items in his mouth, which he will carry around and can spit out for later use. However, he will swallow these items after some time. Holding certain Koopa shells in his mouth will give him additional abilities based on the color of the shell.

  • Green Koopa Shell - He can spit out the shell again, which will behave the same as if Mario kicked it.
  • Red Koopa Shell - Instead of spitting the shell out, Yoshi will fire 3 fireballs forward. They kill the same enemies as Mario's fireballs, and turn them into coins.
  • Yellow Koopa Shell - Whenever Yoshi lands on the ground, two small clouds will appear beside him with a loud thump, knocking nearby enemies over. It has the same effect as Mario's Cape Spin. The shell will behave like a green shell when spit out.
  • Blue Koopa Shell - Yoshi will grow wings and be able to fly. Tap or hold B Button. The shell will behave like a green shell when spit out.
  • Invincible Koopa Shell - Yoshi will gain the 3 abilities: flying, stomping, and shooting out 3 fireballs instead of a shell.

Yoshi can spit out the shell in his mouth and grab it again, to extend the duration of the effect before he swallows it. This is especially useful with the Blue Koopa Shell. Either spit it out so it bounces against a solid wall, back to Yoshi. Or, hold down the Down Dpad, and press X Button or Y Button to drop the shell and then immediately grab it again.

If Yoshi grabs a power-up, Mario will get the effect as if he picked it up himself. Yoshi can also eat berries from trees and will get a Super Mushroom after eating 10. When he eats two pink berries on the same screen (i.e. without going down a pipe or in a door) a smiley cloud appears dropping coins with smiley faces. These coins bounce once and fall off the screen. If you catch all the coins, the cloud will drop a 1-Up. If Yoshi eats a Green Berry, which are only found in Funky, 20 seconds are put on the timer.

If Yoshi grabs a pair of floating Yoshi wings, he enter a special stage, usually without any enemies. When he exits this stage, the level will be completed. Yoshi wings will also transform Yoshi into Blue Yoshi.

Special Yoshis[edit]

Special Yoshis are found as babies in Star Road. Mario must feed the Baby Yoshis one Star, Mushroom, Fire Flower or Feather or five other items that Yoshi can eat to transform them into adult Yoshis. In addition to the regular (green) Yoshi's abililties:

With any Yoshi, the colored shells will still give the Yoshi its power. For example, a Blue Yoshi that eats a Red Shell can fly and spit out fire. If it eats a Yellow Shell, it can fly and stomp on the ground when jumping. A Yellow Yoshi can eat a Red Shell and will be able to spit fire and stomp the ground, etc.
