Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo/Extra game modes

From StrategyWiki, the video game walkthrough and strategy guide wiki

The Dreamcast and all HD Remix versions of Super Puzzle Fighter offer extra modes of play beyond the original mode, which is described at length in the "How to play" section. The original mode is now referred to as Mode X. Additionally, you may choose Mode Y and Mode Z. The HD Remix versions also have a Mode X' (X dash) which change some of the weaker fighters' (e.g. Ryu) attack patterns to make them more competitive. When more information is available, the new attack patterns should be added to this page.

  1. Akuma deals 100% normal damage, unlike in X Mode where he deals only 75%. However, he now receives 120% damage in return.
  2. Chun-Li's attack pattern is unchanged, but now deals 120% damage to her opponents.
  3. Devilot now deals 85% normal damage, unlike in X Mode where she deals only 75%.

Mode Y[edit]

In Mode Y, there are no Crash Gems. Gems will automatically be destroyed when at least three gems of the same color are positioned next to one another along any row, column, or even diagonal. Counter Gems are sent to your opponent whenever you destroy a large number of gems or create a lot of chains, as usual. However, the Counter Gems that are sent start with a count of 9! Counter Gems only count down each time Gems are destroyed, not when the fall. However, if a neighbor of a Counter Gem is destroyed, the Counter Gem becomes a regular Gem instantly.

You will also notice the addition of a small bar over your fighter's head. It is analogous to a Super Meter. The bar slowly fills up incrementally as you destroy more Gems. When the bar fills up to capacity, the message "Press R" will appear. At any time after this happens, you can press the right trigger button on your control pad to summon a diamond of sorts. The diamond that appears does not function like a Rainbow Gem. It remains in one particular color, and one of two things will happen when it falls. If it lands on a Gem of the same color, it will remove all of the Gems of that color in the play field. If it lands on a Gem of a different color, it will transform all of the Gems of the different color into the diamond's color. This transformation can lead to a tremendous amount of chain reactions.

Mode Z[edit]

The rules for Mode Z are quite similar to Mode X. All of the Gems react in the same way. Power Gems are possible, Crash Gems destroy Gems, and Rainbow Gems destroy every Gem of the same color that it's touching. What's very different about Mode Z are the controls and the progress of the game.

In Mode Z, Gem Pairs don't fall. Instead, entire rows of Gems rise from the bottom (like Tetris Attack). You control a 2x2 block cursor. Pressing rotate left and rotate right literally rotates the four Gems that reside inside your cursor. This makes it extremely easy to construct Power Gems. When a Crash Gem touches a Gem, or Gems, of the same color, they aren't instantly destroyed. Instead, they begin to flash for a few seconds before finally breaking. During this time, two things are true: 1, any same color Gem that comes in contact with the flashing body will be added to it, and 2, Gems that are flashing and about to break can not be rotated.

You can manually direct more rows to rise from the bottom by pressing the R button. New Crash Gems only appear with new rows, so it may be in your best interest to raise the stack faster than usual. However, be aware that the game is over as soon as any block reaches the top of the play field, not just the Drop Alley. So don't raise the stack too much.
