Basic Techniques[edit]

Standard Attacks[edit]

Button(s) Description/notes
A button A weak jab. Very unremarkable.
Arcade-Modifier-Tap.pngA button A flurry of jabs. Usually not very good, but can trap opponent against the wall, as Kirby's small size leaves little opening.
Forward +A button A fairly quick kick.
Dash +A button Kirby engulfs himself in flames and launches forward. Decent dash attack, but easy to suicide with his.
Down control+A button A decent kick while ducking.
Up control+A button An overhead kick.
Smash Forward + A button This move kicks an enemy straight ahead of Kirby. Priority isn't very good.
Smash Down control + A button Kirby break dances on the ground, hitting foes on either side of him. Bad range.
Smash Up control + A button Kirby does a backflip, kicking overhead as he does. Decent move.
A button (While holding ledge) Kirby flip kicks up onto the ledge.

Aerial Attacks[edit]

Button(s) Description/notes
A button Kirby spins around in mid-air.
Forward + A button A weak three hit combo. Kirby kicks three times rapid fire in front of him.
Back + A button Kirby kicks behind him.
Down control + A button Kirby does a downward Drill Kick, knocking the enemy downward. In SSB (for Nintendo 64) this was a good move. But now it's been downgraded, and with a horribe lag time, isn't useful.
Up control + A button Kirby performs a mid-air jump and flip kicks overhead.

Special Attacks[edit]

Button(s) Attack Description/notes
B button Inhale Inhales a nearby character and holds them in Kirby's mouth. Press A button to shoot them out at opponents, or press B button again or down to swallow an opponent and copy their B button skill, which will replace Inhale. Taunt (Up dpad) to ditch a power.
Up control + B button Final Cutter Kirby brandishes a sword and leaps high into the air, coming down again and sending a shockwave along the ground. Can spike.
Down control + B button Stone Kirby transforms into a heavy object (a brick, a spiked ball, a 100 ton weight, a large rock, or a thwomp).
Left control (Right control) + B button Hammer Kirby swings a large, star-studded hammer. Slow attack, but powerful.
Arcade-Modifier-Air.png Left control (Right control) + B button Spinning Air Hammer Kirby swings the hammer around him in mid-air. Decent.

Throws[edit]

Kirby's Grab is very short range, but it's lightning quick, making it easy to use while dashing past an opponent.

Button(s) Description/notes
A button/Z button Kirby slaps his opponent.
Down control Kirby throws his foe on the ground and German supplexes on him for a while.
Forward Kirby does a flip forward, bodyslamming his opponent. A quick enough player will be able to break out of the throw before they hit the ground.
Up control Kirby does a fantastic leap, carrying his opponent with him, then comes crashing to the ground, causing momentary fire stun.
Back Kirby falls backwards, throwing his opponent into the ground behind him.

Advanced Techniques[edit]

Suicide Swallow[edit]

Swallow someone then jump off the ledge (which would leave a long time for the swallowed opponent to escape). A much better way to do this is when an opponent is right on a ledge, jump off the edge and on your way down, inhale them. This works very well on larger stages with more room on the sides, such as Hyrule Temple.

Super-Invincibility[edit]

Jump and use Kirby's Stone (Down control+B button). When Kirby falls, he will be invincible for a short period, at which point no enemy can touch him, and he can easily detonate Motion-Sensor Bombs/Bob-bombs or trigger Flippers/Wobbuffets without being hurt. He is vulnerable to grabs, though. It's like Kirby's second shield.

Suicide Throw[edit]

If used near the edge, Kirby's back throw brings both fighters down. The fighter who is grabbed will hit the bottom first. Keep in mind, if the grabee breaks free during the front flip, Kirby will dive to his death alone.

Kirby Bomber[edit]

Using Kirby's multiple jumps fly up above your opponent as far as you can and then use Down control+B button to come crashing down into your opponent and then repeat for as long as your foe is foolish enough to remain out of cover, but beware of Pikachu's Thunder, as it can easily ruin this tactic.

Peaceful Warrior[edit]

In some stages (Icicle Mountain and Poke Floats are best), you can just fly around and keep from falling while your opponent scrambles about. Not for long battles.

Edge Spitter[edit]

Some stages (like Flat Zone and Super Mario Bros.) don't have cliffs on the edges of the screen (the left and right sides). You still lose a life if you walk off them. But how to get your foe to walk off them? Don't. Spit them off by sucking them up, turning around and pressing A button. This trick is awesome.
