If you don't like the button layout, there is a custom controller setting in the options menu under "Customize" that allows you to change the buttons.

PlayStation Action
Neutral dpad Move the party leader or cursor, or switch window displays from the Menu Screen.
Cross button In the "Menu Screen", use it to go back one menu. While in battle, use it for skills choosed in Menu. It can also cancel actions or close a menu. In a "Field Screen", use it while walking to "Dash."
Circle button The "action" button; use it to confirm commands, interact with objects like opening chests or entering doors on the "Field Screen", talk with people (initiate and continue conversations), enter locations on the "Map Screen", or land or mount a vehicle. Also used to select letters when changing a name. While in battle, use it to attack.
Triangle button Open the Menu Screen. In battle, it displays the Battle Menu so you can pick spells, items, etc. In the menu screens, it discards and throws away an unwanted item.
Square button In the menus, when you're over an item, use this to go between the item's description and the item's stats, et cetera. If you're equipping the Sorcerer's Ring you can shoot with the button. In battle, hold this button down to defend. In Special and Skills it can be used to disable any skills and spells you don't want the character to use in battle.
Start button Display Team and Map on the World Map and vice versa.
Select button While on the World Map it open the Menu Screen. In battle it switches between Auto, Semi Auto and Manual (If Tech Ring is equipped).
L1 button Work like Cross button.
L2 button Work like Circle button. In battle reverse the party order.
R1 button In the menu, press this button to down a page in various item lists.
R2 button In the menu, press this button to up a page in various item lists. In battle, use this button to change your target from the closest enemy to any enemy you choose.
L1 button+L2 button+R1 button+R2 button+Select button+Start button Reset the game.
