D2/LoD separation

Okay, I may have messed up by including several LoD elements in this wiki. However i think the current method of separating them is destined to fail. LoD doesn't just add on a couple of new classes and recipes to the original; it changes nearly every character build and strategy. I fell the LoD should be merged into the main d2 wiki, and in a few places simply disclaim (though this will be hard for authors) when a particular strategy or gameplay element applies to just one or the other. Generally we use the same walkthrough and getting started pages for both the main game and expansion, then just put expansion-only stuff on that guide (like new classes, new act, etc.). As the player, you'd know best which parts they share and which are expansion-only. The only guidance I can give is that the Diablo II guide should be readable and usable by someone without the expansion pack. Hope that helps, — najzereT 19:09, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Diablo II build pages

Hey, I'm wondering how you want to put individual build pages on the ToC. If each build gets its own page, we can probably get rid of the general "Class builds" pages and just put the individual pages under each class name. It would look something like:

Classes
Amazon
  • etc.
  • etc.
Necromancer
  • etc.
  • etc.

Or we could use {{tochide}} for build information. Anyway, just an idea. Let me know what you think. :) — najzereT 17:34, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Not a bad idea but there could potentially be a lot of builds, especially for certain classes. Worth trying though, we can always change it back if they get to be too many. One other good thing IMO would be to merge the "Class builds" pages into the main class pages - once they are cleaned up enough with sub-pages for the different builds. The way things are now it's really too cluttered to do much work on that though. Jdorje 01:07, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Reorganization and expansion

I'll continue working on this in the (hopefully not too distant) future since no other Diablo II wiki to which I've contributed really distinguishes between classic Diablo II and its expansion, but it's not currently a priority so I thought I'd explain yesterday's reorganization, and thoughts for future expansion:

  • I've created separate pages or links for each skill tree as there's far too much information to add to each class page.
  • I've created separate pages or links for each quest in the walkthrough as there's far too much information about each area and its inhabitants to upload to each Act page, and far too many areas to create a separate page for each, so it's probably best to split the area information between the most relevant quest pages (the Act pages can contain an overview, with information about the towns and their inhabitants).
  • I've added links for different types of enemies: the Enemies page itself should contain an overview (information about Champion, Unique, Super Unique and boss monsters, including the Evils) while information about specific monsters is added to the relevant sub-page.

I started to expand the Appendices, but the item pages will be subject to much greater expansion in the future:

  • Magic affixes for classic are a subset of those for expansion, so it's probably best to list those on separate item type pages along with the item stats (base Normal and Exceptional items for classic, base Elite items, charms, jewels and class items for expansion).
  • Horadric Cube recipes, sets and Unique items available in classic Diablo II will be put on the Diablo II pages, while those added by the expansion will be put on the DII: LoD pages. I'm not sure if there should be a separate page for each Unique item type, though: there may be 22 Unique body armors in the expansion, but there are only 2 Unique throwing knives.
  • There's currently only one Rune Words page, but there are 78 in total so this page may ultimately only provide an overview, with separate pages for Rune Word helms, body armor, shields and weapons.

Getting Started pages should also be greatly expanded, to cover subjects such as attributes, unit stats, skills, animations, attack and defense, damage, immunities, death and so forth. Most of this can be put in the Diablo II section, although there are a number of properties which only exist in the expansion (oskills, charges, Chances to Cast, Aura When Equipped, and so forth), or which are much more common.

Role-playing games of any kind seem to be quite information-intensive (and thus labour-intensive) and there are two (possibly three) I'd like to complete before giving this my full attention, so any work I do is likely to be sporadic. Onderduiker (talk) 16:32, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Work in progress

Diablo II is now the first guide I'll work on when I'm not motivated to work on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series: although Torchlight is a much more popular (and deceptively complete) guide (currently #22 vs #253 for Diablo II and #167 for Lord of Destruction on the list of most popular guides), I already have extensive knowledge of this game while Torchlight is still relatively unknown.

In the past month or so, I've created and added content to all DII Unique item pages, and completed a basic walkthrough: however, since the Getting Started and Classes sections are still filled with red links, this guide cannot yet be upgraded to stage 3. I could probably do so in a matter of months if I'd maintained a proper backup of my contributions to another wiki which has been offline for the better part of this year: although I'm sure it'll be back online eventually, I'm also sure if it goes offline again that it'll be for months on end, so I'm keen to upload its content elsewhere (here) when I can.

Ironically, I'm posting this statement of intent just as I'm getting tired of working on this and returning to KotOR (#48), but in the coming year I plan to improve this guide a great deal and it'll be interesting to see what impact that has on its popularity. There will eventually be well over 200 images uploaded, which is why I'm creating subcategories.
