After a not-so-good first attempt, Marvelous Entertainment tried once more to adapt a game from the KOF series to the GBA to make The King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood, but this time the chosen version was KOF 2000. Improvements in all departments such as graphics, sound, and gameplay were brought, as well as a more elaborate plot but still very simple compared to the SNK originals.

In addition to Yuri Sakazaki not being one of the assist characters and Moe Habana, 4 new characters never seen joined the rooster and the gameplay is the same as the Neo Geo.

The game was also released to the Nokia N-Gage by Hudson Soft in 2005 with the title of The King of Fighters Extreme, but due to the N-Gage's bad command keys, it would make bad gameplay, because of that, Hudson made the new "Easy Command System", making the gameplay easier on the Nokia handheld.
