Gems are pieces of precious material (typically ember ore) that can be inserted into slots in weapons, armors or trinkets, to produce a specific effect when the host item is equipped. Often, a given gem will have an offensive effect when placed in a weapon's slot, and a defensive effect when placed in an armor or trinket slot.
Each type of gem occurs in several grades. The higher the grade, the more powerful its effect. Two or more gems of identical type and grade can be transmuted together into next higher grade of the same type. Lower grade gems can be bought from the female gem merchant Triya in town.
