Sakura Wars

Once I'm done mapping out the dungeon I'm working on I can take a look into this game instead for a while. It could be fun to work together on it. --Zaiqukaj 17:31, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I've done a quick test run through the first chapter. It looks like every dialog with options has 4 responses. I'm going to start documenting the results from the responses. I'll also work on mini-game advice. Also happy birthday! --Zaiqukaj 12:37, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Sorry about the delay. I get pretty easily sidetracked from getting online sometimes. I'll get to proof reading. --Zaiqukaj 14:02, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Hamlet

Hey Johnny, saw your note to Naj, thought I'd supply an answer. A lot of stuff happens in Hamlet (it's Shakespeare's longest play) but the core of the story revolves around a Danish prince named Hamlet. Hamlet's uncle secretly murders his own brother, the king and Hamlet's father, in order to claim the throne. In addition, he marries Hamlet's mother, so naturally Hamlet plans to avenge his father's death by overthrowing his uncle and ultimately killing him (although he too dies in the end, along with his mom.) A lot of people feel that Disney's "The Lion King" is kid-friendly version of Hamlet (Scar kills Simba's father Mustafa, Simba grows up, challenges Scar for power and wins). I haven't played Sakura Wars, so I have no idea how Hamlet relates to the game, but I hope this helps a little bit. Wikipedia has an article about Hamlet, but it's almost as confusing as the play itself. By the way, you're doing a great job, don't feel so nervous about the quality of your contributions. Square Enix

Johnny, I really don't wish to embarrass you at all, but reading that you've never heard of Square-Enix is going to shock a lot of people. They're responsible for some of the greatest RPGs in the history of video games, including Chrono Trigger, the entire Final Fantasy series, the entire Dragon Quest series, among several other popular series like Kingdom Hearts, Parasite Eve, the list goes on and on. I would recommend that you try searching for them on Google before you post any more about them. We even have Category:Square Enix that you could have checked out before you posted. They are about one of the most famous game developers out there. Again, I'm totally not trying to make you feel bad, or ridicule you. I just wanted to help you out a little bit here. Images

Those images you found for Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love look great. The full size ones will be perfect for their profile pages. I'll make some cropped head shots for the guide when I get home since I'm leaving the house in a moment. Could you please take a look at our our image policy. It has really good tips on how images work here. Also once I do get back is there any part of the box or manuals you think should be scanned for the guide? I'll try to at least get the front and back of the extras booklet for the front page gallery. --Zaiqukaj 14:59, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

No worries. Almost everyone will miss something the first time they try to upload an image. That image idea sounds kind of cool. I was thinking it might be good to have little icons of each girl for the dialog results when you loose or gain favor with them. --Zaiqukaj 15:38, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

I moved your images to proper names and categorized them. When you want to use them in the guide, you can find them here. Keep in mind that image names should have the name of the guide or an abbreviation in them. Also, whatever text you add to the summary actually goes into the file page—it's not just an edit summary. That's where a description of the image and the image categories go. — najzereT 16:01, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Sakura Wars naming differences

Hi Johnny,

On Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love/Walkthrough, you added the following under the Secret to Supernova Attack section:

"Special note: This is presuming you own the English version. The Japanese version on the PS2 dual version in terms of names is not available so you have to imagine or translate in your view the version you currently own at the time. Example, Rosita is Rikaritta and Cheiron Archer is Sattinga Weinberg in Japan."

This doesn't make sense to me. Are you trying to say that the Japanese version does not have the Supernova Attack? What is the "dual version" of the Japanese PS2 version? How is the Japanese version, in terms of names, not available? Your final sentences refer to naming differences... We often create naming differences pages to compare versions, or add the table to the Getting Started page for reference; the location of the table isn't important, but its existence is. Can you start one for us? --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 19:26, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

I didn't want you to remove it. I just wanted to know what you were talking about, because it doesn't make any sense. Can you rephrase it for me, if it is important? It sounded like you were talking about a few different things and you mashed it all together... --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 20:02, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
I figured you were just trying to talk about naming differences... don't beat around the bush, just say it! Make a table, like so:
Name 1 English -- Name 1 Japanese
Name 2 English -- Name 2 Japanese
etc.
That wouldn't have been so hard, eh? --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 15:42, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

GoldenEye 007

Please leave out info regarding the voice actors, etc. Focus on the game strategy. If people want that info they can look it up on IMDB or in the game credits. Feel free to make a /Credits page if you really want to list all of those reference, but the info shouldn't be in the walkthrough. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 17:25, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Run on sentences

Please try to keep your ideas brief. Separate, short sentences are usually better than long ones that try to connect too much. Revising and cleaning up your words is very tough. Please check out this page and this quiz. I want you to be the best editor, ever. =) Thank you for your contributions. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 20:29, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Please do not use "i" on content pages

Please avoid referring to yourself or to your opinions in the guide content. No one knows who the author is while they are reading it. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 17:09, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

"By the way"

Try to avoid using phrases like "by the way", as they imply a conversation (which cannot occur), as well as a meaning like "Oh, I forgot to say...". We don't want to forget anything, so make sure things are placed in an order that makes sense. =) --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 05:54, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Do not remove controls from a page

If other guide versions are combined on a single page, add {{control selector}}. In many cases, generic explanations can be used, but we like to add the control images because it is a feature that we want to use as much as we can so people know that our guides are visually different than the normal ones they've seen before. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 20:39, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Fortune Street

Hi Johnny. I applaud you for starting a guide on Fortune Street, but I think making direct comparisons to Monopoly only further confuses the description of the game. If you mention Monopoly, then people will start out thinking of the rules for Monopoly, only to be surprised when you further differentiate the rules of the game. Procyon

Heya Johnny, as you may or may not have noticed, Naj isn't as active as he used to be. Unfortunately, I'd put him under the "inactive" label; asking him for help may not be as effective as it used to be. As for the Fortune Street title, this site usually follows North American naming policies, so we'll leave it as is. I made redirects for the Japanese and European/Australian titles to prevent any confusion. Since the game took a major price drop (surprising for a first-party Nintendo game, but welcome of course :), I'll probably be picking it up myself some time soon. I'd be willing to help you out with the guide if you'd like. --WarioTalk 15:45, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Mass Effect 3 and CotM

I don't have Mass Effect 3, so unfortunately I won't be of much help. I have seen the 2nd one, and I am playing Dragon Age Origins which is similar, but overall the best I can do is watch your edits and maybe go out and grab some info from another guide. I will make it the collab for December if no other game beats it out. Luigi's Mansion 2 was nominated earlier. Also, I am really spread out around games, but am currently investing my game time on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which I will not be helping to develop on StrategyWiki, as MMOs are just way too much work for one person and I prefer dedicated Wikis for those (there are already 4 or more out there for that game). Anyways, keep it up. You're not alone. Just play through the game and make concise notes here for each section. The next person will expand upon what you do not. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 19:41, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Watch Dogs

Welcome back! I expanded the main page of Watch Dogs with all of the information from the Wikipedia article, including uploading the box artwork. I see you created a basic table of contents. Please take all of the information that you know and what you can gather from the game's manual, and write it down in the Getting Started or Walkthrough pages. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 22:32, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Writing quality

Hi Johnny. I've held off writing to you about this for as long as I could, but after needing to undo these changes, I feel I have to make a comment. Some of your changes to the Phoenix Wright guides have been well written and helpful, particular where versions differ and controls have changed. But in general, the quality of your writing has been a little poor. In particular, I have noticed:

  • Frequent grammar problems, with verb tense agreement, and singular/plural pronoun usage.
  • An overuse of literary crutches like, "Well," and "Anyway," which don't belong in a guide.
  • Describing, in great detail, cinematic moments that don't need to be described in a guide because players don't need help with them.
  • Foreshadowing, or spoiling, minor details that aren't crucial to playing the game, but might be more fun for the player to discover on their own.
  • Commentary that is not helpful to players (e.g. not everyone will find something as humorous as you do, and it's not important to the guide.)
  • Insertion of your own humorous material.

While your contributions to the site are always welcome, we expect every contributor to keep their edits as high-quality as possible. I don't know if you have noticed or not, but I've been coming along behind you and making some corrections to your edits. I was hoping that you would see them and take note of what I fixed so you wouldn't make the same mistakes again. I don't mean to discourage you from continuing your work, but I have to ask you to review what I've written here, and try to make some adjustments in your writing style, particularly with respect to the first two points. Thanks very much for understanding. Procyon 18:41, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Johnny, thanks for your reply. I understand your situation, but I appreciate your explanation. Like I said, I don't mean to discourage your efforts, and if SW is a good creative outlet for you, then that's great. I just want to make sure you're aware of some of the mistakes you were making so that you can learn from them and become a better writer. The star in the guide's header means the guide has been selected as a Feature Guide, which means it's among the best guides that the site has to offer, and serves as an example to other guide writers what a good guide looks like. While any guide can reach completion stage 4 by anyone, the community has to vote for a guide to become completion stage 5. The thing is, our community isn't quite as active as it used to be, so it's difficult to get the kind of consensus needed for stage 5. Procyon 02:42, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
Stop using the words "WELL" or "ANYWAY"... Procyon 14:51, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
All I'm asking is don't use those words to start a new sentence. Let's say you want to change:
He will complain about something and then go about his business.
Don't change it to:
He will complain about losing the game. Anyways, he will go about his business.
Just change it to:
He will complain about losing the game. He will then go about his business.
You have this habit of breaking up sentences into two new sentences, and starting the second one off with "Well," or "Anyway," and that's a habit you should really break. It's unnecessary, and confusing to a reader. Procyon 17:30, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Changing perspective

I'm not entirely convinced that changing the perspective of the guide from Phoenix (3rd person) to "you" (which is 2nd person, not 1st person) is the right thing to do. Players already know they are in the role of Phoenix, so it's not necessary to make that kind of clarification. The use of 2nd person should be restricted to when you are actually giving the player instructions on how to do something. For example:

Phoenix will want to raise an objection to this line of questioning. In order to do that, you should press the X button.

You can't necessarily change something like:

Phoenix was surprised.

to:

You were surpsied.

Because what if the player wasn't surprised by this, even if Phoenix is. The player is not the character. If it were up to me, I would change all the references that you're changing from "Phoenix" to "you" back to "Phoenix". Procyon 17:35, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Grammar corrections

If English is not your best language, please don't make changes like this one, that is not the correction conjugation for "he does". Procyon 15:59, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Grammar with "So"

Except under rare circumstances, sentences should not start with the word "So". Most of the time, "so" is a conjunction used to join two separate clauses separated by a comma. (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/grammar/british-grammar/speaking/so) Procyon 13:52, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Guide advice

The only advice I have to give you for horror game guides is the same advice I have for every other type of guide:

  • Be clear and concise. Make sure everything you write can be easily understood.
  • Use correct grammar. Again, make sure people understand what you are trying to tell them.
  • Don't spoil things in the game that readers don't want to be spoiled.
  • Don't spell out details about a game that are immediately obvious and don't need to be explained (cutscenes, tutorials, etc.)

If you stick to those four points, anything that you write will be fine. Stay cool and happy holidays. Procyon 15:53, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Hyrule Warriors

Hey, no problem! I don't own the game (yet - it sounds fun from what I've read of your guide ;) but you're doing a good job filling out all of the guide's pages so I'm just doing what I can to help. :) --WarioTalk 04:51, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Interlinking

Hi Johnny. I noticed that through Hyrule Warriors, and the Phoenix Wright guides, when you want to reference another game, you put it in quotes, like "Ocarina of Time". Since we are a wiki, you should be linking to those guides. So instead of writing "Ocarina of Time", you should be typing: [[The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time|Ocarina of Time]], so that it shows up as Ocarina of Time and players can click on the link to go to that game's guide. Please try to do this whenever possible. Thank you. Procyon 20:03, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
