Linking to a category without including the category

Rather than using the noinclude tages, if you just stick a : in front of Category, it will link to the Category without classifying the page. For example, Category:Nintendo (typed [[:Category:Nintendo]]) puts a link to the Nintendo category without classifying this page as part of the category. Procyon 15:26, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

User:Procyon I know. (you might have noticed I'm somewhat familiar with wiki) I'm not sure which one of my edits you're referring to right now. Lite Grooves (talk) 16:34, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
User:Procyon User:Prod, I guess it's about Special:diff/847589. (Template:Self/Documentation) I wanted to categorize the main template, and on Wikipedia this is usually done this way as it allow the actual template to be categorized without categorizing the documentation while also making it possible to protect the template (if needed) while still allowing changes to be made to the category by anyone. Lite Grooves (talk) 16:38, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
Ah, got it. Yeah, that was the edit I was referring to, I was wondering why you took that approach, and if it was simply to avoid having the page categorized as such. Procyon 18:34, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
Our categorization system is much simpler, so we don't need to change categories much. Generally, I'm not a big fan of /Documentation pages, since the technical reason for having them is no longer relevant. The point on protection is good though, allowing users to update documentation. -- Prod (talk) 16:18, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Third level subpages

We generally try to avoid 3-level subpages like Gothic/Admission to the Old Camp/Whistler's Sword unless there's a high risk of overlapping names. -- Prod (talk) 23:33, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Prod my reasoning here was that these quests, while clearly subquests, don't have their own journal entry. But some (like Gothic/Vanished Guard) do despite also being a subquest of Gothic/Admission to the Old Camp, so putting everything on one page may not be right either? I don't really care which way we'd go, but having half of the subquests on their own page while the rest is combined on Gothic/Admission to the Old Camp doesn't appear consistent. I suppose it's best to move 3-level subpages simply to 2-level in this case? Lite Grooves (talk) 00:06, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
I haven't played the game, so I'm missing some context, but all these quests seem to happen in close succession. Having a user go through a series of very small pages seems excessive. Split off the biggest parts to their own pages, but a bunch of small quests that are encountered together should be fine on the same page, regardless of how the game tracks them. This seems like the other extreme of having all the content of the guide on one page. -- Prod (talk) 00:34, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Prod you may be onto something here that I didn't realize before.. You typically have to leave the camp for Gothic/Thorus' Quest (though you can kill Mordrag on the spot and be done with it, though most players wouldn't win that fight.. but it can be done and the quest will be completed), you have to leave the camp for the Gothic/Test of Faith as well as Gothic/Vanished Guard (though it's close to the camp) and Gothic/Recipe of the Sect.
You can technically solve Whistler's Sword, Scatty's arena fight and learning a skill for Fingers almost on the spot. They don't require you to go anywhere else, but they are puzzles. You're not going to do them in quick succession, for Fingers you have to level up first. For Scatty, unless you figure out that losing is in fact an option, you'll probably try to get prepared for the fight - which will take long, finding/buying weapons and armor and levelling to increase your strength and weapon skill. For Whistler, unless you have the courage to go back to Whistler without his sword (which you probably won't if you fear it'll fail the quest) or you have figured out that goods can be traded for ore (which is never explained in-game), you will probably wait until you've found a way to obtain the additional 10 ore that's needed. And all this is only if you actually found the questgivers. You'll find Whistler no problem, but Sly can be overlooked initially. And Fingers is hidden (you'll walk past him. you will), and unless you asked Diego about learning first, Fingers has nothing to say to you.
It's different from the busy work on the farm in Gothic 2. Those quests really are completed in quick succession, they are much easier and connected to each other. Get the turnips and you're told to give them to Hilda, who so happens to need a frying pan and you can't be interrupted by other quests that require you to go elsewhere. This in addition to Lobart simply telling you about the other questgivers if you ask, whereas Diego in Gothic 1 for Gothic/Admission to the Old Camp is rather vague about it. ("if you can't find the influential people you don't belong here anyway!" is roughly what he says)
I agree that we shouldn't blindly follow how the game tracks quests. The in-game journal is not the same as a wiki. I think I'll try putting everything on a single page, minus the drivel. Lite Grooves (talk) 02:10, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Prod I think Gothic/Admission to the Old Camp is quite good now, what do you think? Lite Grooves (talk) 06:01, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
