In the Age of Chaos, two factions battled for dominance. The kingdom of Azeroth was a prosperous one. The Humans who dwelled there turned the land into a paradise. The Knights of Stormwind and the Clerics of Northshire Abbey roamed far and wide serving the King's people with honor and justice. The well-trained armies of the King maintained a lasting peace for many generations. Then came the Orcish hordes... No one knew where these creatures came from, and none were prepared for the terror that they spawned. Their warriors wielded axe and spear with deadly proficiency, while others rode dark wolves as black as the moonless night. Unimagined were the destructive powers of their evil magiks, derived from the fires of the underworld. With an ingenious arsenal of weaponry and powerful magic, these two forces collide in a contest of cunning, intellect, and brute strength with the victor claiming dominance over the whole of Azeroth. |
Although the Single Player Human and Orc Campaigns are separate, they intertwine chronologically: for example, in the second scenario of the Human Campaign, you prepare Grand Hamlet for an attack that occurs in the third scenario of the Orc Campaign; in the seventh scenario of the Human Campaign, you respond to an attack on Sunnyglade that occurred in the sixth scenario of the Orc Campaign (Orc scenarios also tend to be (slightly) more difficult than their Human equivalents). Thus to play through the story in chronological order you should alternate between the two, starting with the Human Campaign.
While Human structures and Orc structures are identical or analogous in almost every way except appearance (the only other difference is that Human Stables are 3x3 while an Orc Kennel is 2x3), there's more variation between Human units and Orc units:
Score
Score and rank are for information only, since there's no high score table at the end of each game or campaign.
You start any Single Player campaign or custom game with 300 points and the rank of Peasant (Human) or Peon (Orc). During a game you gain a point each time a Peasant or Peon returns goods to your Town Hall after harvesting Lumber or mining Gold, and you lose points when any of your units or structures are destroyed (although rebuilding can allow you to recover some). To display your current score and rank (as well as objectives) in the Mini Map window during a game, press
.You gain 50 points at the end of each game, regardless of its outcome, and another 500 points if the outcome is victory. As your score increases, so does your rank beyond certain thresholds.

Beyond a certain point, your score rolls back to 0. During the Human and Orc Campaigns, after each victory you start each new scenario with your score and rank at the end of the last one... although if you restart a scenario before defeat or victory, then you restart while retaining your current score and rank. However, each scenario in the campaigns has a maximum score, so even if you exceed it during a game then that is the score at the end.
