Dawn Of War II: Retribution is the stand-alone second expansion to the Dawn of War II series. The single player campaign will be playable with all races.
As of January 2011, the Eldar, The Space Marines, the Imperial Guard, The Chaos Space Marines, the Orks and the Tyranids have been announced as playable races in single-player. It will also reintroduce base building to some degree.
There were speculations that the new playable race would be Imperial Guard and/or the Inquisition, due to the Inquisition triple lined "I" used in the word "Retribution" in the game trailer; in addition, the expansion's wishlist icon in the Steam system features a female Witch Hunter Inquisitor. On December 21, 2010, German PC Gaming magazine Gamestar revealed the new race would be the Imperial Guard.
Campaign
Dawn Of War II: Retribution will offer a campaign for every race, including the new race: The Imperial Guard. Players will be unable to import old campaigns from Dawn of War II and Chaos Rising.
Every Environment from the previous games will appear in the different Retribution campaigns. The dusty desert mountains and houses of Calderis, the swampy unknown reaches of Typhon Primaris, the massive city spires and cities of Meridian, the snowy wasteland of the twisted Aurelia, the long forgotten Space Hulk known as the Judgment Of Carrion, and one new environment:
- Cyrene - Originally one of the recruiting worlds of the Blood Ravens seen in Dawn Of War II and Chaos Rising campaign, but was subjected to an Exterminatus. Now seen as a volcanic wasteland environment.
Setting
Dawn Of War II: Retribution takes place ten years after events of Chaos Rising. The sub-sector Aurelia is now suffering from conflict between Ork pirates called the Freebooterz led by Kaptin Bluddflagg to pillage the sub-sector, the arrival of the Eldar of the Craftworld Alaitoc led by Autarch Kayleth to seek about a prophecy and recovering an ancient artifact, a Tyranid Swarmlord restoring the remnants of the Hive Fleet Leviathan and to the link of the Hive Mind, the Blood Ravens defending the sub-sector led by Captain Apollo Diomodes to hunt down Chaos as well as investigating their Chapter Master, Azariah Kyras, for being corrupted by Chaos, the return of Chaos Space Marines of the Black Legion led by Eliphas the Inheritor to fulfill his promise to Abaddon the Despoiler to annihilate the Blood Ravens, and the newly arriving Imperial Guard of the 5th Cadian Regiment led by Lord General Caster, performing an Exterminatus under Inquisitor Adrastia to investigate for corruption within the sub-sector Aurelia as well as the Blood Ravens' Chapter Master Azariah Kyras.
