Basically, units in Advance Wars 2 are divided into three groups: Ground units, Naval units and Air units.
Ground[edit]
Infantry[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry
- Can attack: Copters, Ground
The Infantry unit is the basic Ground unit with a base cost of 1000. Although the weakest of all units, it serves the purpose of capturing cities.
Mech[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Ground
- Can attack: Copters
The Mech unit is a MECHanized form of the Infantry, but notably slower than it's counterpart. At the cost of 3000 it packs an anti-vehicle rocket launcher that can be used to great affect. Like the Infantry, it can also capture cities.
Surprisingly the Mech's movement is not taxed by mountain travel. Both infantry units can increase their line of sight by 3 if they move to a mountain terrain.
Recon[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry
- Can attack: Copters, Ground
The Recon unit is the lowest priced vehicle that is very mobile - especially on the roads. As a RECONnaissance unit they provide a large line of site during the Fog of War. Otherwise, this is an unarmored vehicle that has the same machine gun the small tank has.
APC[edit]
This unit cannot attack.
The APC unit is the troop carrier of the game - it cannot attack, as it has no weapons, but can transport one unit of either Infantry or Mech, supply any units it is next to and also soak up a lot of fire before being destroyed.
Tank[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Ground
- Can attack: Copters, Navy
The Tank is the basic ground vehicle, useful in its mobility due to its tracks and its versatility of being able to attack a large number of units.
When moving a number of tanks, bring the furthest tanks in the back to the front lines, then use those already on the battlefield to advance. This is in contrast to how you move indirect units.
Medium tank[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Ground
- Can attack: Copters, Navy
The Medium tank is one of the strongest units in the game. At the hefty price of 16000, this unit delivers a wallop of firepower that can break armies apart. Compared to a regular tank, the medium tank has a more powerful cannon, a knockout machine gun, and more than enough armor. It is however a less mobile unit and has a significantly shorter line of sight than a tank. The price should not be glanced over, as it is the second most expensive ground unit.
The strength of the medium tank lies not with its firepower, but its armor instead. A regular tank gets shredded once shelled by an artillery piece or attacked by a mech, but a medium tank can survive more than 2 hits for both instances.
Neo Tank[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Ground
- Can attack: Copters, Navy
Essentially a medium tank with more firepower, more armor, and 1 more unit of mobility. Downside is the price of 22000.
Anti Air[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Copters, Planes
- Can attack: Ground
This vehicle can take down helicopters and infantry units in one shot using the vulcan cannon, but it lacks the armor tanks have.
Artillery[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Ground, Navy
This unit attacks from a distance, cannot counter-attack, and in addition it cannot move and attack on the same turn. Cheaper than a regular tank, it is by far more powerful. Artillery does 15% more damage to a tank in a tank v. tank matchup. This is the same unit that can take infantry units out of the battlefield, effectively cripple medium/neotanks, and even attack naval units. This is an underrated unit, but can be downright devastating if used properly. Flank the vehicle with infantry units or bring it up to the front lines; either way, the results will be generous.
When moving a number of indirect units, attack using those already on the front lines, then advance with those in the backfield. This is in contrast to how you move direct units.
Rockets[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Ground, Navy
This unit can attack units from a distance. Weak against Direct combat units, stronger than Artillery with a longer range.
Missiles[edit]
- Use to attack: Copters, Planes
This unit can attack air units from a distance. Cannot attack ground or naval units.
Sea[edit]
Battleship[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Ground
- Can attack: Navy
This ship is an indirect combat unit of the sea but the pride of most navys.
Sub[edit]
- Use to attack: Navy
Good against most naval foes but hates the cruisers anti sub missiles.
Cruiser[edit]
- Use to attack: Copters, Planes, Submarines
Use this ship to bring down enemy jets flying over the sea or attack subs. Transports two copters.
Lander[edit]
This unit cannot attack
Transports two ground units.
Air[edit]
Fighter[edit]
- Use to attack: Copters, Planes
Use this jet to shoot down Bombers when Anti Air Vehicles are not able to stop them alone.
Bomber[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Ground
- Can attack: Navy
Use this plane to support ground troops. Bombers can take down most ground units
Battle Copter[edit]
- Use to attack: Infantry, Copters, Ground
- Can attack: Navy
Use this thing to take down most enemies but watch out for fighters. This is the most versatile unit, it is able to attack everything except planes.
Transport Copter[edit]
This unit cannot attack.
Transports one infantry.
