When starting as a mage, you will need to train in easy places like Noobshire or any place that is level 1 or 2 and just try to get the new mage attacks like Fire Ball and Ice Shard. These will help in your journey. Then you can start doing quests to get money and buy better weapons. You don't just have to have a staff – you can get swords as well, but don't forget to enhance the weapon when going up a level, as this will make the weapon much stronger.
