Archers are any unit that uses a Spear or Bow at range. The building that trains archers is the Archery Range.
Archer units are:

Basic: Archer: Cost: 25 Wood, 45 Gold. Weak unit, armed with a bow. Excels at range but is rubbish in melee.
Stage 2: Crossbowman: Cost: 25 Wood, 45 Gold. Basically the same as Archer except more powerful.
Stage 3: Arbalest: Cost: 25 Wood, 45 Gold. Basically same as the last two except more powerful.

Basic: Skirmisher: Cost: 25 Food, 35 Gold. Anti-Archer unit, armed with Javelin.
Stage 2: Elite Skirmisher: Cost: 25 Food, 35 Gold. Basically the same as before except more powerful.

Basic: Cavalry Archer: Cost: 40 Wood, 70 Gold. Hit-and-Run unit armed with a bow.
Stage 2: Heavy Cavalry Archer: Cost: 40 Wood,70 Gold. Basically the same as before except more powerful.

Basic: Hand Cannoneer: Cost: 45 Food,70 Gold. Gunpowder unit accurate at closer range but getting less accurate as range increases. Bonus against Infantry and good at stopping melee units from closing in. Weak in melee combat.

There are some Unique archer units created at Castles for various civilizations. They are all powerful, but in my opinion the most noteworthy is the Briton Elite Longbowman. Fully upgraded, this unit outranges almost any defensive structure. (Except Teutonic Castles with Crenelations.)
