Speed Racing[edit]

Time: 60 seconds (1:00)
Record: 1'58"833

Once Skier #27 has appeared at the top of the slope, with four other CPU-controlled skiers (Skier #3, Skier #7, Skier #8, and Skier #11) on either side of him, the text "READY" will appear upon the start line, as the view changes to first-person (but you can change it to third-person by pressing the Decision Button, and back again by pressing it again); once it has changed to "GO", you shall have to push the inner edge up to make Skier #27 start his descent down the slope, and pass ten billboards for Goldwin on both sides of the track. You'll then have to turn to the left, as you pass an eleventh billboard with a left-pointing arrow on it on the right side of the track - and once you have done this, you shall have to turn to the right, as you pass five more billboards (the twelfth one has a right-pointing arrow on it, but the next four have right-pointing chevrons on them) on the left side of the track. You will then have to turn to the right again as you pass four more billboards with right-pointing chevrons on them on the left side of the track; once you have done so you will have to turn to the right once again as you pass five more billboards with right-pointing chevrons upon them on the left side of the track, and pass under a checkpoint. Your time shall now be extended by thirty-six seconds as the text "TIME EXTENDED" appears on the screen - and you'll now have to turn to the left as you pass ten more billboards for Goldwin upon both sides of the track along with six more billboards (the thirty-sixth one has a left-pointing arrow on it, but the next five have left-pointing chevrons on them) on the right side of the track. Once you have done so, you shall have to pass between two more billboards (with flying snowboarders on them) on both sides of the track, as Skier #27 skis off the end of a ramp and through the air; once he's landed you must turn to the left as you pass five more billboards (the forty-fourth one has a left-pointing arrow upon it but the next four have left-pointing chevrons on them) on the right side of the track. You now have to turn to the right as you pass six flashing billboards (the fiftieth one has a right-pointing arrow on it, but the next five have right-pointing chevrons on them), on the left side of the track - and once you have done so, you will have to turn to the right, as you pass eleven more (regular) billboards (the next four, which aren't present if you select Gate Racing mode, are for Namco Amusement for Entertainment while the fifty-fifth one has a right-pointing arrow on it and the next six have right-pointing chevrons on them) on the left side of the track then pass five more (regular) billboards for Goldwin and Namco on the right side of the track. You shall now have to turn to the right again as you pass five more (regular) billboards (the seventy-second has a right-pointing arrow on it, while the next four have right-pointing chevrons on them), on that left side of the track; once you have done so, you shall have to turn to the right once again, as you pass four more (regular) billboards (the seventy-seventh one has a right-pointing arrow on it, but the next three have right-pointing chevrons on them) on the track's left side and pass under another checkpoint. Your time shall now be extended by twenty-five seconds as the text "TIME EXTENDED" appears on the screen for a second time - and you'll then have to ski into a cavern and turn to the left as you pass four more (regular) billboards with left-pointing chevrons on them on the right side of the track. Once you have done so, you will have to turn to the right as you pass two more (regular) billboards with right-pointing chevrons on them on the left side of the track, then pass between eight more (regular) billboards for Goldwin on both sides of the track; you'll then have to turn to the right again as you pass a ninety-fifth (flashing) billboard with a right-pointing arrow on it on the left side of the track. Once you've done so, you shall have to turn to the left as you pass a ninety-sixth flashing billboard with a left-pointing arrow on it on the right side of the track, along with ten final (regular) billboards for Goldwin on both sides of the track - and once you've passed under the finish line, your position and total time shall be displayed on the screen as Skier #27 comes to a halt. If your total time was less than 2'02"667, the game shall go into "best-time" mode, so you have to enter your initials on the course's table with pride (regardless of position) by using the Selection Buttons to select the letters and pushing the Decision Button to confirm them; once you have done so, the text of "GAME OVER. Look behind you before stepping off the steps" shall appear on the screen, before the game goes back into attract mode.

It is also worth noting that if you finish first on any of the courses in this mode, the text "CONGRATULATIONS! WINNER" will be displayed on the screen instead of your position, and you will be treated to a presentation ceremony for the Goldwin Super Alpine Cup (the competition around which the game is based); Skier #27 (who has removed his helmet) shall take his position on the first-place podium of the winners' stand with Skier #3 and Skier #7 (who have also removed their helmets) having already taken their positions on the second and third-place podiums on either side of him. The game shall then show a montage of stock scenes from your chosen course, focusing heavily on Skier #27 for being the protagonist, before it goes into "best-time" mode.

Gate Racing[edit]

Time: 70 seconds (1:10)
Record: 2'04"348

Once Skier #27 has appeared at the top of the slope with a timekeeper (but no CPU-controlled skiers), the text "READY" will appear upon the screen, as the view changes to third-person (but you may change it to first-person with a press of the Decision Button, and back again with a second one); once the on-screen text has changed to "GO", you will have to push the inner edge up to make Skier #27 start his descent down the slope. In this mode, there are no checkpoints (or Namco Amusement for Entertainment billboards!), but there are sixty-three pairs of gates that have to be passed through (the odd-numbered pairs are blue while the even-numbered ones are red, and each time Skier #27 passes between one, his time will be extended by one second as the text of "EXTENDED" appears under it) - and once you have passed under the finish line, the text "GOAL" will appear on the screen with your gate percentage and total time below it as Skier #27 comes to a halt. If your total time was less than 2'08"403 the game shall go into "best-time" mode so you will have to enter your initials on the course's table with pride (regardless of position) by using the Selection Buttons to select the letters and pushing the Decision Button to confirm them; once you've done so the text "GAME OVER. Look behind you before stepping off the steps." will appear on the screen before the game goes back into attract mode (but if you were unlucky enough to not pass through even one of the gate pairs, the game shall not go into "best-time" mode after finishing, even if your total time was less than 2'08"403). Once you've finished this course in both modes, you shall have to move on to the game's sequel, Alpine Racer 2 (1996) - which allows two players to play it simultaneously when two single-player cabinets are linked together.
