New Year's Day occurs on January 1st and lasts from 06:00am - 11:00am. The event takes place at the Wishing Well where Katrina, Tortimer, and four random villagers will gather. The villagers will take turns tossing a coin into the well and making a wish. If the player talks to the villager that is in the process of making a wish, they will be able to take a turn themselves. The player can choose to toss money (100 Bells) into the Wishing Well, or may decline and simply make a wish.

If the player talks to Tortimer he will gift them a random journal to commemorate the start of a new year. When placed in the home, the journal allows the player to make daily notes which can be hidden from other players if desired. It also notes the dates of upcoming events, records the player's play history, and keeps track of whether or not the player attended special events.

If the player talks to Katrina, she will provide them with a fortune written on Fortune Paper. This is the only way to acquire this stationery as it is not orderable from the catalog. In order to receive the fortune the player must make room in their letter inventory. Katrina erroneously calls the fortune a Sunshine Lottery and tells the player they must make room in their Mailbox. This may be an example of poor translation, or may suggest that Katrina was initially meant to send the player a special contest code via mail, but that this was changed prior to release. Either way, the player can receive as many fortunes as they like if they have enough space in their letter inventory.

Notes[edit]

  • An announcement will be made at the Train Station whenever the game is loaded between 06:00am and 11:00am to mark the beginning of the event. A closing announcement will be made at 11:00am.
  • If the game is not loaded before 10:55am no characters will be present at the Wishing Well.
  • A letter from Mom will also arrive today with 10,000 Bells attached.
  • Villagers will often toss a silver coin, and less commonly, a gold coin. These may be references to the 100 and 500 yen coin, respectively.
