Batman (1990) start screen.png

Once you have inserted a coin into the cabinet of Atari Games's 1990 beat 'em up/first-person shooter arcade game, Batman (if you are using MAME to play the game, you will know that it states I'm Batman. from the MSM-6295 on startup), and pressed the Attack Button, it will proceed to the start screen shown above, as it says Be careful. from the MSM-6295; however, the amounts of starting lives seen on it will depend on how the cabinet has been set:

Normal starting lives Special starting lives (determined by what the "Special lives mode" setting in the game's options menu is set to)
2 5 (2x + 1 life for 2 credits), 6 (2x + 2 lives for 2 credits), 7 (2x + 3 lives for 2 credits)
3 7 (2x + 1 life for 2 credits), 8 (2x + 2 lives for 2 credits), 9 (2x + 3 lives for 2 credits)
4 9 (2x + 1 life for 2 credits), 10 (2x + 2 lives for 2 credits), 11 (2x + 3 lives for 2 credits)
5 11 (2x + 1 life for 2 credits), 12 (2x + 2 lives for 2 credits), 13 (2x + 3 lives for 2 credits)

If you choose to insert another coin into the cabinet here, the text of "INSERT X COIN(S)" (X being the number of coins required for a credit, and ranging from 1 to 9) in the right box will change to "PUSH STICK RIGHT AND PRESS START"; however, if the arcade operator has set the "Special lives mode" setting in the game's options menu to "none", none of this applies, and the game immediately starts on the first stage when the Attack Button is pressed.
